The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. Soldier tradesmen belonging to the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Corps (RAEME) were attached to and Armoured Corps regiment as a Light Aid Detachment (LAD) to provide battlefield repairs to armoured vehicles. Captain Jim Farrelly joined 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles as a trooper. Lieutenant Colonel J.M. Allard was Commanding Officer of 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles 1959 - 1962. He had served with 2/4th Armoured Regiment in World War Two. A plume of emu feathers was worn in the puggaree of the slouch hat by Australian Light Horse. The tradition was continued by Australian armoured regiments wearing a smaller tuft of emu plumes behind the hat badge on the black beret. Nominal roll of a small Australian Armoured Corps unit of World War Two (WWII). Raised at Puckapunyal, Victoria in January 1942 from members of the 2nd Armoured Brigade Group for service in Malaysia, but with the fall of Singapore before they could embark, they were restructured as the 2/2nd Australian Armoured Brigade Reconnaissance Squadron in February 1942. In July they moved to Greta, and in August to Narrabri to participate in large scale exercises by 1st Armoured Division. In October 1942 they were combined with the 2/1st Australian Armoured Brigade Reconnaissance Squadron and D Squadron 2/11th Australian Armoured Car Regiment to form the new 2/4th Australian Armoured Regiment. Mervyn 'Banjo' Harris (born 4/3/1914) was the eldest son of Walter 'Bob' and Zillah Harris of Bendigo. He enlisted in the C.M.F. 8th L.H. February 1937. No V22764. He enlisted in the A.I.F. 7th January 1941 when the 8th light horse disbanded. He was then posted to he 143 P.O.W. camp Murchison. Private Harry Nutman Derrick, a native of Tallangatta Valley in NE Victoria served with the 37th Australian Infantry Battalion 10th Brigade, 3rd Division AIF. He was wounded on three occasions. On the third occasion he was captured near the village of Clery on 30 August 1918. He died in a German military hospital on 12 November 1918 the day following the Armistice. A transcribed copy of the diary is held in the Local History Section of the Albury LibraryMuseum.This diary documents the day-to-day activities of a private soldier of the AIF during almost two years at war including two occasions on which he was wounded and evacuated to England. This gun sight was brought home from WWI (1914-1918) by members of the 13th Battery 5th Field Artillery Brigade (Albury Battery) as a souvenir of its action in the first battle of Bullecourt April 1917. On one occasion during the battle the Battery was surrounded by a German counter attack. They dragged their guns out of the gun pits and continued firing to the flanks and rear and supported the Australian counter penetration attack which restored the situation. After the war a recreational reserve in Albury NSW was named Noreuil Park after the French village near where the action occurred.A rare object with significant connection to Albury NSW and its citizen soldiers who served with the AIF in WWI (1914-1918). The engraving gives it close association with the recreational park in Albury named after the French village of Noreuil and honouring the soldiers who fought there with great courage. 20th Light Horse Regiment serving in a infantry role was posted to Merauke on the southern coast of Dutch New Guinea (now the Indoneasian province of Papua) in 1943. It was the only Australian Light Horse regiment to serve overseas in WWII. Sergeant Adrian Dunne, a native of Tocumwal NSW, was killed in action 12 November 1944.
