Bryan TRUEMAN (13 November 1941- ) Born Derbyshire, England worked in Australia 1975–1992 Bryan Trueman studied at Blackpool School of Art in 1962, undertaking Postgraduate studies at Manchester College of Art in 1963. He toured the east coast of America in 1967-8, then returned to England where he started to train himself in Ceramics. Migrating to Australia in 1975 Bryan Trueman lectured at Caulfield Institute of Technology, Melbourne. In 1982 he opened a studio in Warrandyte, Victoria. Bryan Trueman was a visiting lecturer to the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education c1982. He is particularly well-known for his painterly use of glazes to depict the Australian landscape, using the platter as the base form. Kingsley MARKS (1929 - ) Kingsley Marks trained at the South Australian School of Art before teaching secondary schools. He became interested in pottery after attending a class one night a week at the John Martins building in Adelaide. He received grants to travel and study ceramics in Mexico the US and Canada, then taught for twenty years at the Torrens and South Australian Colleges of Advanced Education. Upon his retirement in 1985, he moved to Brentwood near Minlaton and established the Brentwood Pottery, specialising in sculptural work using a range of forming, decorative and firing techniques. Helen BURGESS (c.1927 - 08.03.2018) Born Sydney, New South Wales Helen Burgess gained a Diploma of Design and Craft, and instructed Craft in the Occupational Therapy Departments of Repatriation and Rehabilitation. In 1957 she came to Victoria, gaining a Technical teachers Certificate from the Bendigo School of Mines. Soon after moving to Ballarat in 1973 she joined the newly formed Ballarat Embroiders Guidance Group (later Embroiders Guild). She lectured in Craft at the Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education from around 1974. She retired from the Ballarat College of Advanced Education in 1982. Helen Burgess was also an office bearer with the Ballarat Field Naturalists Club. Helen retired from BCAE in 1982 as Lecturer in Art and Craft, having commenced at BIAE approx. 1974. This work was possibly exhibited at the Embroiderers Guild, Victoria - Ballarat Branch. Henry MORITZ (1931- ) Born Mainz, Germany Arrived Australia c1952 Henry Moritz was an experienced commercial artist when he left Germany for Australia. After working as a railwayman, coal miner, fruit picker and steelworker, he started teaching commercial art at the Ballarat School of Mines Technical Art School in 1963. He moved to the Mount Helen Tertiary Division, and was head of the Art School at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education (BCAE) when he produced this work. The Ballarat College of Advanced Education logo was derived from the Southern Cross depicted on the Eureka Flag, which was adopted by Ballarat College of Advanced Education in 1978. The logo was designed by former student Debra Garton, who graduated with a Diploma of Art and Diploma of Education. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Geoffrey MAINWARING (29 October 1912-13 April 2000) Born Adelaide South Australia Geoffrey Mainwaring studied at the South Australian School of Arts and Crafts before becoming an art teacher at Thebarton Technical School (1928-36). Mainwaring was adept at depicting a variety of subjects, from landscapes to portraits, and was very competent using a variety of media, including pencil, oils, and watercolour. He was a confident draftsperson, and completed many sensitively rendered portraits that give an insight into the character of the sitter. In June 1941 Geoffrey Mainwaring (SX13471) joined the 2nd Australian Imperial Force, and after five months was transferred to the Engineers and employed as a Sergeant-Instructor, specialising in demolitions. In late 1942, he was sent to New Guinea as an Australian army artist on probation. On 27 May 1947, Mainwaring was discharged from the Army, having served for five and a half years. He was appointed as an artist on a civilian basis until his paintings were completed in March 1948. In 1949 he was appointed Head of the Art School at the Ballarat School of Mines (now Federation University Australia). He continued to paint commissioned portraits for the Australian War Memorial until the late 1950s. Geoffrey Mainwaring died at Ballarat in April 2000. Ray WOOLARD (1951-03/2024) Born Ballarat, Victoria Ray Woolard studied at the Ballarat Junior Technical School (c1967); Diploma of Art (Sculpture) at the Ballarat School of Mines/Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education from 1969-1972; a Secondary Art and Craft course at the Ballarat Teachers College c1973; and then the Victorian College of the Arts (Melbourne) 1974-75. He was studying at Ballarat Teachers' College when he completed 'Moose in High Healed Sneakers'. It became a greatly loved artwork on the Gillies Street Campus, and was moved the Mount Helen Campus in 1976 when the Ballarat Teachers' College became part of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. The mural features brown and green glaze with features of indigo. The work has no particular pictorial representation. It is an arrangement of colour and form, designed for enjoyment rather than to analyse. The theme relates to the development of the Universe through basic symbols such as plant forms, fish, birds and to mans development through symbols of science and engineering. The outer edge is symbolic of earths crust being peeled away to reveal science and nature. The mural depicts the changing of seasons from Winter to Summer (left to right). Celia Rosser (1930- ) Born Melbourne, Victoria Celia Elizabeth Rosser is a renowned Australian botanical artist, best known for having published The Banksias, a three-volume series of monographs containing watercolour paintings of every Banksia species. She trained in Art at the Melbourne Institute of Technology In 1970, Celia was appointed Science Faculty Artist at Monash University. Four years later she was appointed University Botanical Artist, and began the project of painting every Banksia species. The project took over 25 years to complete, and resulted in the publication of a three volume monograph entitled The Banksias, with accompanying text by Alex George. Publication of the final volume in 2000 represented the first time that such a large genus has been entirely painted. In 1977 Celia Rosser was awarded the Linnaean Society of London's Jill Smythies Award for botanical illustration, and in 1995 was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia. Monash University awarded her an honorary Master of Science degree in 1981, and an honorary PhD in 1999. Banksia Rosserae is the last banksia species discovered and was named after the artist. Since 2002, the Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne have awarded the "Celia Rosser Medal for Botanical Art" to outstanding exhibitors at their "The Art of Botanical Illustration" exhibition. Neville FRENCH (1955- ) Born Maryborough, Victoria In 1977 Neville French graduated from Ballarat College of Advanced Education after studying a Diploma in Fine Art (Ceramics) between 1974 and 1976, and was a tutor there for six months in 1978. He holds a Master of Arts, Research (Ceramics) from RMIT Universiy, and was awarded the Vitrify Alcorso National Ceramics Award in 2012. Neville has an international reputation as a ceramics artists and educator. From 1982 to 2012 Neville French was teach and coordinator of the Ceramics department at the Ballarat School of Mines and University of Ballarat (now Federation University). From 1982 to 2012 Neville French taught Ceramics at the Ballarat School of Mines TAFE, which later merged with the University of Ballarat (now Federation University Australia). He completed a Graduate Diploma of Education at Hawthorn State College in 1980, a Certificate of Stoneware Glazes from Brisbane College of Advanced Education in 1983 and a Master of Arts Fine Art (Ceramics) at RMIT University in 2000. Between 2010 and 2012 Neville French taught post graduate honours and masters Ceramics students. During his time as a student at Ballarat Neville Bunning would collect clay from the Enfield clay pit. He described following white tyre tracks to find the location. He described the clay as silky smooth and and fired to a beautiful grey colour at stoneware tempreture. When blended with terracotta clay from Nerrina or fireclay from Bacchus Marsh a wide range of different bodies could be created. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Statement: "My work involves an exploration of elemental vessels - extending porcelain to develop taut contours and spatial dynamics. I seek to distill an essence of purity to evoke notions of quietude and transendence through the expressive use of glaze and its relationship to form, tactility, weight and light. Forms are wheel-thrown, altered and slowly scraped to develip a soft line and solidity. Coloured matt glazes are layered and fused to the porcelain body through multiple firings to give expression and luminosity to the surface,. The iodosyncratice nature of glaze stimulates the imagination. Owen RYE (05.11.1944 - ) Born Cooma, New South Wales Internationally recognised in the field of Ceramics, Owen Rye was a lecturer at the School of Visual Arts, Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education (incorporated into Monash University 1992), 1985-91 and senior Lecturer at the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design, Monash University (later Federation University) from 1992-2003. Ewan ROSS Ewen Ross grew in the Wimmera and aims to manifest the changing nature of this landscape in his work. This region is affectionately known as the land of the big sky and it is from this viewpoint looking down and across, which inspires his sense of image making. Occasionally he refers to stories that occurred from times past but generally these images reflect the current state of this land. From 1976 to 1978 Ewan Ross undertook a Diploma of Art (Painting) at Ballarat College of Advanced Education (now Federation University. He was awarded a Graduate Diploma of Education in 1982. He was a Curatorial Assistant at the Art Gallery of Ballarat from 1979 to 1981, and taught Art at Horsham Technical School between 1983 and 1985. From 1986-1897 Ewan Ross taught at the Wimmera Institute of TAFE, and was Lecturer in Painting & Printmaking at the University of Ballarat (nor Federation University from 1998-2005. Kees HOS In 1956 Kees and his wife Tina made a new life with their two children in the arts community of New Zealand. In Australia Kees established the art school at Gippsland College of Advanced Education in 1971 with a radical multidisciplinary approach to art education. He generously delivered encouragement and opportunities to many people including lecturers, visiting artists and students. His small team literally built an art school from zero. Temporary accommodation in an old factory and service station in Morwell moved to three student-built studios on the Gippsland Campus. His highest recognition was 1997 when the names of Kees and Albertine Hos were added to the Wall of Honour in the Garden of the Righteous at Yad Vasheem in Jerusalem along with many others who put their lives on the line against the biggest killing machine the world had known. The ‘hiding-place’ in Kees and Tina’s home was discovered but Tina managed to rescue a baby as her own while the Jewish parents were transported to Auschwitz and Dachau. Kees was on the run using his printmaking skills to forge passports but was eventually captured and jailed, the war’s end saving his life. Rodney FORBES (1951- ) Born Melbourne Rodney Forbes' work is figurative narrative painting and uses autobiographical and incident-as-metaphor methods to explore wider issues of knowing and belonging in oral traditions such as working class, children’s and artisan subcultures. On 04 August 1987 Lu Bing Qun, Head of English at Nanjing Institute of Education, was farewelled at a dinner at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education, where the calligraphy was presented to Jack Barker. Lu had been working in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences since since the beginning of Semester 1.He participated in and contributed to a unit on Chani in the Bachelor of Arts and a unit in the B.Ed. With Linda Brumley he has translated and recorded all the Chinese gravestones in the Ballaarat New Cemetery. Lu was attached to the Ministry of Education in Melbourne where he spent considerable time preparing Chinese language material for use in Victorian Schools.
