Wooragee Landcare Group
Photograph, 27th August 2004
Taken on the 27th August 2004 the photographs shows attendees of the Direct Seeding Expo that took place at Wooragee Hall socialising and eating during a lunch break. Direct seeding involves the seeds being sowed directly into the soil to achieve germination and establishment. Direct seeding is said to mimic natural processes and can result in trees and shrubs growing healthier root systems. Direct seeding is best for larger areas and can be done at a lower cost. As the Wooragee community values nature, this expo brought together members from the community in order the educate them on direct seeding which would then benefit the community. This photograph is significant at the Wooragee community values nature and believes in replacing what has been lost. Thus, the photograph demonstrates the communities commitment to ensuring the preservation of nature through education of seeding practices.Coloured rectangular photograph printed on gloss photographic paper Reverse: WAN NA E0NA2N2. Friendly Societies were founded in the Australian Colonies in the mid-19th Century by immigrants from England who had been members in Societies which dated back to the 18th Century. Like all working people these immigrants experienced sickness, accidents, unemployment, death and burial. They needed help of like fellows to tide their families over these times. So they formed a branch of one of the Friendly Societies back in the mother country. The idea was to make fixed contributions to a fund and when they were off work they would receive a payment. When they died funeral benefits would be paid and the widow and children would be cared for. It was a form of local insurance for hard times. Badge - WW2 fundraising badge, Tin hat badge, 1940s
Tin Hat Day was established in 1922 after the end of WWI. It raised funds to benefit returned soldiers who had fallen on hard times after the war and during the Great Depression. It continued on during WW2 and into the 1950s. This badge is c1940. The tin hat badge was modelled on the British steel combat helmet known as the Brodie helmet, designed and patented in London in 1915 by John Leopold Brodie. Colloquially, it had many names including the shrapnel helmet, battle bowler, Tommy helmet, tin hat, dishpan hat, tin pan hat, washbasin, and in the United States the doughboy helmet. The German Army called it the Salatschüssel (salad bowl).Tin Hat Day was a significant annual event over several decades. Badges such as are not rare; they were sold in large numbers but as ephemeral items relatively few of those sold were retained.A round metal badge with a domed centre, mimicking a stylised tin hat. Document - Caroline Manton Probate 1889, 1889
Tait collection: item 37 of 62 This is a document giving details of the Will and Probate of Caroline Manton who died in 1889 and was the wife of Frederick Manton and lived at ‘Tenilba’ in Domain Street, South Yarra. She left personal estate to the value of £536 for the benefit of her husband and children but no other details on her life have been found. The lawyer in the case was Ernest Chambers who had legal offices in Port Fairy, Koroit and Warrnambool at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. This document was in his possession in his Warrnambool office and it was passed down to successive lawyers in the legal premises in Kepler Street, Warrnambool and located in 2014 in the same building, the former legal premises of Mackay Taylor. This document is of minor interest as it does not appear to have any relevance to local Warrnambool history except that the lawyer involved had legal offices in Warrnambool. This is a cream-coloured parchment paper of three pages stitched together with black cord. There is handwritten material written in brown-coloured ink on five pages. The seal of the Supreme Court of Victoria is attached with black ribbon. The ink on the front page is fading and difficult to read.caroline manton, ernest chambers, tait collection -

Minutes Book, Melbourne illustrated & Victoria described, c.1885
This book was given to Henry Huntingdon Smith in 1918 by a grateful sister of a soldier killed in World War One. Private Percy Palmer was listed as coming from the Warrnambool area even though his enlistment place was given as Bannockburn. H.H.Smith (1857-1941) is an important figure in Warrnambool’s history. He had a bakery business at the corner of Lava and Fairy Streets. He was a Warrnambool Councillor and Mayor, a Hospital Committee member for 39 years, a Methodist church office-bearer and an active worker for the welfare of local returned soldiers. It was said that he greeted every returning soldier at the Warrnambool Railway Station. Mrs Sharpe was one of those who benefited from his solicitude and kindness. This is book is of antiquarian interest but more importantly it is a lovely memento of Henry Smith’s untiring concern for local soldiers returning from World War One and for their family members. This is a hard cover book of 38 pages. The cover is blue with gold lettering and gold ornamentation on the front and back covers. There are two sepia-coloured photographs of Melbourne at the front of the book and two blue stamps of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society at the front and the back of the book. The pages of the book have become detached from the binding. The inscription at the front of the book is handwritten in purple ink. ‘Melbourne, Aug. 28, 1918, To Mr H. Ephemera, Radicalesbians, Bisexuality [Conference Paper], Radicalesbian Conference, Sorrento, Victoria, 6-8 July 1973, 1973
The attached paper was presented to the Radicalesbian Conference held in Sorrento over the weekend of 6-8 July 1973. Barb Creed presented this paper written by Barb, June, and Jenny. As Chris Sitka notes in her history of the Radicalesbians, the paper was easily the most controversial of the Conference, generating a significant amount of hostility. The implication that many drew from the paper was that 'bisexuality was the really non-sexist form of relating because only bisexuality was breaking down gender divisions.' Participants subsequently highlighted their resentment towards the paper as stemming from the 'fact that we were reclaiming our lesbianism... Meanwhile bisexuals were only trying to reap the privileges of heterosexuality while enjoying benefits of lesbianism.'radicalesbians, bisexuality -

Two documents that show that in 2003 Melbourne Legacy decided to sell two of its properties, 22 Selwood St, Hawthorn East and 9 The Avenue, Windsor. This decision was taken due to rising maintenance costs and that the money raised from the sale of the properties could be used to benefit all 24,000 widows under their care. One document was a statement by President Tony Parkes about the decision and the other a letter from Jellis Craig offering to be involved in the sale. They had read about the decision in the Leader newspaper. No time frame had been set and all residents of these two properties would be consulted by Legacy personnel with a family member present. Also photocopies of the two land titles for the properties. This shows the commitment of Melbourne Legacy to ensure that residents individual circumstances, accomodation, needs preferences and location were considered in the move, and cause as little disruption to the residents as possible.Cream A4 paper, plus brochure from real estate agent, Jellis Craig,Stamped 'Received 09 JAN 2003 Melbourne Legacy' in blue ink, top left hand corner. Map - An Angler's map of the Hopkins River Estuary, Angler's map Hopkins River, 1980s
This is a map of the Hopkins River Estuary prepared by Dr John Sherwood for the benefit of anglers. The information on the sheet includes the location of sand banks, the water depths, boat ramp facilities and public access facilities. Some of the information has been gathered from aerial photographs. The map has been produced by the Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education which was developed in the late 1960s from the tertiary section of the Warrnambool Technical College and with all its departments established by 1984 at the Sherwood Campus five kilometres from Warrnambool on the Princes Highway. Today the site is occupied by Deakin University, Warrnambool campus. The Warrnambool Anglers’ Club has its headquarters on the banks of the Hopkins River near the mouth of the river and the Lyndoch Aged Care facility. This map is of interest as a specialist one, providing fishermen with detailed information on all aspects of the Hopkins river estuary. Fishing has been both a profession and a popular recreational pursuit for Warrnambool residents since the early days of the city’s settlement. The Hopkins River Estuary has been a focal point for fishermen throughout Warrnambool’s history. This is a sheet of paper folded three times to produce a folded map. The front cover has a black and white photograph of two fishermen with a large fish. The map of the Hopkins River Estuary is in yellow, blue and black and covers the side of one sheet and three quarters of the other side. There is an advertisement for the Hopkins River Boathouse with a black and white sketch of the boathouse and notes on the map written by Dr John Sherwood. There are several diagrams showing the water depths. The map has some silverfish damage and some tearing at the folds. warrnambool anglers’ club, history of warrnambool, hopkins river, hopkins river estuary, john sherwood -

Work on paper - Photograph, W H Robinson, Druids Sandhurst Lodge No. 247, 01 / 11/ 1910
Druids are known to exist from around the 3rd century B.C. Their name may have come from a Celtic word meaning “knower of the oak tree.” Many of their ceremonies were carried out in oak groves, which they considered sacred and members were, at that time a mix of priest, judge, doctor and philosopher. The Druids enjoyed a revival in the 19th century and were taken up enthusiastically during the Victorian era. Druidry was believed to have been introduced into Australia in 1851 with the setting up of the first lodge in Melbourne under the name United Ancient Order of Druids. Unlike the Freemasons, the Druids were not a secret society and were not selective in who they let in, as long as they paid their dues and acted more like a benevolent society than a spiritual movement. "They originally operated when there were few benefits available from the government or employers and the introduction of sick leave and other employer provided benefits, combined with the gradual introduction of government subsidised medicine, caused the need for them to diminish." Druids House — in Swanston Street, was opened by the Lord Mayor in 1927 and was designed to be the movement's national head office. It was completed at a cost of 19,000 pounds. This photograph was believed to have been commissioned by the Druids of Bendigo to the Licensees of the Queens Head pub where they regularly met, situated on the corner of the Bendigo-Maryborough Rd & the Calder Alternate Hwy ( Lockwood Cross Roads). The old Marong Council offices were situated opposite from 1864 until around 1908 when new offices were then built in Marong. It is believed that this photograph and a photo of the pub were given to Marong Shire by descendants of the publicans, probably in the 90’s. Framed black and white group photographic portrait of 37 members of the Sandhurst Chapter of the Druids staged and shot outdoors. Each of the gentlemen is carrying a bouquet of flowers. The photograph has a gold inner mount with the second mount cut to give the impression of a frame. The outer mount is hand painted with botanical motifs and elaborate text c.t. Plan - Subdivision Plan, Erin Heights Estate, East kew, 1917
Pru Sanderson, in her groundbreaking ‘City of Kew Urban Conservation Study : Volume 2 - Development History’ (1988), summarised the periods of urban development and subdivisions of land in Kew. The periods that she identified included 1845-1880, 1880-1893, 1893-1921, 1921-1933, 1933-1943, and Post-War Development. These periods were selected as they represented periods of rapid growth or decline in urban development. An obvious starting point for Sanderson’s groupings involved population growth and the associated economic cycles. These cycles also highlighted urban expansion onto land that was predominantly rural, although in other cases it represented the decline and breakup of large estates. A number of the plans in the Kew Historical Society’s collection can also be found in other collections, such as those of the State Library of Victoria and the Boroondara Library Service. A number are however unique to the collection. The Kew Historical Society collection includes almost 100 subdivision plans pertaining to suburbs of the City of Melbourne. Most of these are of Kew, Kew East or Studley Park, although a smaller number are plans of Camberwell, Deepdene, Balwyn and Hawthorn. It is believed that the majority of the plans were gifted to the Society by persons connected with the real estate firm - J. R. Mathers and McMillan, 136 Cotham Road, Kew. The Plans in the collection are rarely in pristine form, being working plans on which the agent would write notes and record lots sold and the prices of these. The subdivision plans are historically significant examples of the growth of urban Melbourne from the beginning of the 20th Century up until the 1980s. A number of the plans are double-sided and often include a photograph on the reverse. A number of the latter are by noted photographers such as J.E. Barnes. The Erin Heights Estate in Kew included just seven lots in in Valerie Street. These were all that remained of this wartime subdivision, the other 11 allotments on Balfour and Belford Roads having already been sold. Balfour Road was to be only a temporary name as the street is currently called Windella Avenue. Now, the parkland opposite the subdivision is the reserve created from the route of the Outer Circle Railway. This Railway reached Kew East in 1925, but had been planned as far back as 1873. The development focuses on the benefits of living in Kew: being at the highest of Kew’s ‘suburbs’; being a good residential area; its rapid growth; and the proximity of the Kew East tram in High Street. In 1917, the electric tramline only extended to a terminus at the Harp of Erin hotel. The terminus is clearly represented on the plan.subdivision plans - east kew, erin heights estate -

Container - Medium Wood Drawer
Ipecacuan powder, or Dover's powder, was a common emetic used through the eighteenth and nineteenth century as a sudorific and prescribed for colds, coughs, insomnia, rheumatism, pleurisy, and dysentery. Gum arabic was often used as an additive to promote binding of other ingredients to a liquid medium. Likely gum arabic was not prescribed by itself even though there are some health benefits for doing so, such as slowing the rate of absorption of some drugs within the gut. Camphor was a stimulant, narcotic and sudorific and was administered in pill form which included part ipecacuanha and opium to non acute fevers and remedy chromic rheumatism, as part of a liquid mixture to treat violent headaches as well as rheumatism, or in a solid form stored in a small bag worn around a patient's neck as a preservative against infection. Lint was commonly used for medical dressings. The right one of two marching medium sized wood drawers.
