Album - Photographs - Comeng Dandenong, 1980s - 1990s
In March 2024, Milissa Box (DTP) was at a trash and treasure market. She'd found a $5 photo album for sale with some photos that she thought might be of interest… From what I can gather it belonged to the gentleman pictured who was a worker at Dandenong in the Comeng and ABB eras. He appears to have worked on the Z3, A1/A2, B1/B2 class trams, Hong Kong LRVs, Comeng Melbourne suburban trains, and later the extra Victorian-purchased XP power cars and XAM sleepers to enable the Riverina XPT to be extended to Melbourne. It's clear he was very proud of the vehicles he'd helped to build. I have scanned a selection of the images, which appear to be a mix of official builder's portraits, team photos, and self-taken shots showing candid everyday scenes on the shop floor. There are also images of the launch of the XP power cars with then-Victorian Premier Joan Kirner; and some personal visits to see the Flying Scotsman, Victorian Goldfields Railway, Coal Creek, etc. Filename Description Date Comeng Scans 2024-03-05 0001 Three Comeng workers (including the photographer) stand in front of Comeng suburban train 697M (Chopper unit) c. Functional object - Scissors - Princess Alexandra opens Pollard Archway, Wodonga, 1959
In 1959 Princess Alexandra of Kent visited Australia as the representative of Queen Elizabeth II for the Queensland Centenary Celebrations. Her six week visit began with her arrival in Canberra on 14th August 14 and she departed from Canberra on 26th September. Time spent in Australia included 3 weeks in Queensland. Her Royal Highness' visits to New South Wales and Victoria were comparatively brief and informal. In New South Wales she made two country visits including to Albury and a night spent at Bungowannah Park near Jindera. Her visit to Victoria began in Wodonga where she officially opened the Pollard Archway over the Causeway. She received an enthusiastic welcome as she approached the Archway accompanied by a motorcycle escort. As Princess Alexander stepped forward to take the scissors from a red plush case, her Lady-in- Waiting, Lady Moyra Hamilton, tugged at the Princess' sleeve, whispered and gave her a coin. The Princess handed the coin a halfpenny to the Wodonga Shire President, Cr J. S. Hore, saying: "I must give you this, otherwise it might be unlucky." (The halfpenny "gift" stems from an old English superstition that a "sharp" gift such as a knife or scissors must be dulled with copper or else a friendship will be lost. After cutting the ribbon and declaring the Pollard Arch, named in honour of Councillor Charles Pollard M.B.E. she was presented with a bouquet by 10-year old Leslie McLeod. Princess Alexandra led by a pipe band was driven along the Hume Highway and High Street which were lined by thousands of people including school children. After a short trip along High Street and Elgin Street to the Railway Station she departed from protocol to speak to the many children who had crossed the barricade. Princess Alexandra then boarded the Royal Train for her journey to Melbourne. This item is significant because it represents the visit to Wodonga of Princess Alexandra in 1959.A pair of scissors in a red box. The bottom of the box is lined with red cloth and the lid is lined with white silk bearing the trademark "Jewelcrest". The emblems (rising sun and wreath) are of bronze, and the lettering of the inscription and names of fallen soldiers are in raised lead letters. Originally the Memorial was completed with a full life size, 6ft in height, sculpture of an Australian soldier in Sicilian marble. The memorial bore the inscriptions: ERECTED BY THE RESIDENTS OF WODONGA AND DISTRICT IN MEMORY of the Men of this Town and District who fell in the Great War, 1914-1919, Also in grateful recognition of the men who served and returned. “Lest We Forget.” In 1982, due to frequent vandalism and high cost of materials to repair, the soldier statue was removed and later installed at the RSL Rooms. THE WATER TOWER is a major landmark of High Street, Wodonga. It began operation from 1924 until it ceased operation in 1959. It stood unused for a decade until the lower section was modified and put to use as “ The Tower’s Cobbler’s Inn” in 1962. In 1972 Wodonga City Council proposed to demolish the Tower. Their suggestion received an unfavorable response from the city’s citizens, so the Tower still stands today. THE BAND ROTUNDA was officially opened on Sunday 5th September 1920 at the naming of the triangular reserve at the corner of High and Hovell Streets as Woodland Grove. The Wodonga Band gave a public performance on this occasion. The tri-coloured ribbon, which stretched across the entrance to the Rotunda was cut by Mrs R.H Murphy, daughter of Mr. John Woodland, secretary of the Wodonga Shire Council for 35 years, after whom the area was named. The rotunda has since been moved to Martin Park, Wodonga. Small china pieces carrying scenic views of holiday destinations were a popular kind of souvenir during much of the 20th century. These items have local and social significance as they reflect the landmarks or local features valued by the community over time. Ceremonial object - Vases, pair, Early 20th Century
The quatrefoil design similar to other chapel decorative arts, suggests these vases may belong originally in one of the MIssion Chapels. Possibly either the demolished 1937 Building at Port Melbourne or the original Chapel from the early 20th C at the previous Mission Building in Port Melbourne. Possibly donated in the name of Olive Cramer along with an organ lamp and memorial plaque mounted in the Chapel of St Peter. Many people see the quatrefoil as representing good luck. Christians, on the other hand, see the quatrefoil as representing the four Gospel writers: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Some Christians also regard it as being symbolic of the cross.Pair of small fluted heavy brass vases with quatrefoil opening and small footprint. Highly polished outer surface and unpolished inner; each of the undersides seem to be of lead or coarse alloy lined finish.quatrefoil, clover, shamrock -

Bendigo Symphony Orchestra Inc.
Programme (Item), Beever, Kristen, Resurrection, November 2024
This program was given to attendees at the Bendigo Symphony Orchestra and Gisborne Singers performance on 24th November 2024 In a thrilling conclusion to their 2024 concert season, Bendigo Symphony Orchestra present Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 ‘The Resurrection’ – a transcendent journey from darkness to light. Witness the symphony on a colossal scale: ten trumpets, ten horns, two sets of timpani and an organ are just the beginning of Mahler’s mighty orchestration. And after the success of 2022’s inaugural Symphonia Choralis festival, BSO are once again partnering with the Gisbourne Singers to bring this glorious work to life. “Why have you lived? Why have you suffered? Is it all some huge, awful joke? We have to answer these questions somehow if we are to go on living – indeed, even if we are only to go on dying!” Written in a letter to a friend, these are the questions Mahler hoped to answer with this symphony. While epitomising the emotion and drama of the Romantic era, the work also anticipates the radical advances of the 20th century. Beginning with a steely funeral march, Mahler spins German folk-song and klezmer-inspired flourishes through four stunning movements, culminating in a sublime hymn of resurrection. This symphony explores life and death on a cosmic scale, and showcases Mahler’s rich technicolour writing and flair for dramatic narrative. “The whole thing sounds as though it came to us from some other world. I think there is no one who can resist it. One is battered to the ground and then raised on angel’s wings to the highest heights.” Be swept away by an eternal masterpiece.MAHLER SYMPHONY NO. 2 RESURRECTION Sunday 24th November 2024, 2.30pm Ulumbarra Theatre, Bendigo Luke Severn Chief Conductor Nicole Marshall Guest Conductor Merlyn Quaife AM Soprano Liane Keegan Contralto Gustav MAHLER Symphony No. 2 in C minor, ‘Resurrection’ I.
