From a box of photographs in Nancy U'REN's papers used during research for her thesis, The Early Growth and Development of Sandridge (1976) and/or her book with Noel TURNBULL, A History of Port Melbourne (1983). Comparing the form and location of the doors and windows with plans for the various types of Bank Houses, the semi-detached building on the right appears to be Type 5. Date is approximate. George James Jackson and family lived at 7-9 Russell Street from 1900-1950s. He and his wife were manufacturing jewellers and had a workshop adjacent to the house. Their son assisted in the business. George Jackson was very patriotic and hoisted the flag every day. His grandchildren, who lived nearby, were expected to attend on their way to school. On the occasion of the photo, the flag was being hoisted for the return of George's son - also George - from the 1914-1918 war.Black and white photo taken in the front yard of a brick house with another brick building to its right. The first building which housed Sunbury State School No.1002 was built on the corner of Macedon and Stawell Streets in the early 1870s and functioned as the local State School until 1912 when a sturdier red brick structure replaced on the same site. In 1999 Sunbury State School was relocated in the former Industrial School heritage buildings in Jacksons Hill. The existing building in Macedon Street was incorporated into the Sunbury Community Health Centre. The school in the photograph is the original Sunbury State School NO. 1002 building, where many early Sunbury residents attended. This knife was used by Lottie Rem who ran the cookhouse at Astergren;s Timber Mill at Cabbage Tree in East Gippsland from 1954 until 1966.. It was bought in Orbost around 1957 - 1958. Sited on the banks of the Cabbage Tree Creek, the township was built by the timber mills to house their workers. Although the timber mills have disappeared, some of the buildings still remain. The "Cook House" and "Manager's House" are two buildings. The Cook House was built to supply meals to the workers of the Alstergren Mill. Some of the original interior walls were made from hessian and wallpaper. The few houses to survive to today are now used as private dwellings.The Cabbage Tree Creek township was established to support the booming timber industry of the mid 20th century. Allwood at Hurstbridge was named and first settled in 1837 by the Haley family. A house was built of one round of vertical slabs (red gum). Later it was the Hurst family home where Henry Hurst was shot by Burke the Bushranger on 4 October 1886. George Gray took over the property and the original home was eventually demolished. Gray, a fruit grower established an orchard and Allwood Nurseries which became a very successful business growing and exporting. This is probably around the time when this photo was taken where rows of fruit trees can be seen in the foreground. A house and associated buildings, possibly part of the nursery are behind. Slaughterhouse Hill was so named because Bennett's butchers had a slaughterhouse there.A view of Linton taken from Slaughterhouse Hill to the north-east of the town. Ticket to a cabaret at Earl's Court in aid of the St Kilda Red Cross Emergency Service on 26 October 1940. Earl's Court Theatre opened in the early 1930's at 17 The Esplanade, St Kilda. The building formerly housed the Lyric Theatre (from 1913-1922), which presented live entertainment and movies. After initially operating as a theatre, Earl’s Court became a ballroom and nightclub. Customs duties were a means of raising revenue between the 1850’s and Federation. They were first introduced by NSW in November 1854 after it was separated from the colony of Victoria three years earlier. J P Hanify was appointed as sub-collector at Belvoir, the official name present day Wodonga at that time. Wodonga Customs House was built near the end of Union Bridge over the Murray River in 1859 Tariffs or customs duties greatly angered residents and it was little wonder the customs officer of the day was always an unpopular man. Tariffs had to be paid on articles such as tobacco, many food items and new clothing that were carried across the Border. The range of items was extended over time, leading to some farmers even swimming their livestock across the river to avoid duties at the Customs house. The levying of duties ended with Federation in 1901. Francis Cobham depicted in this photograph, took up the position of Customs officer in 1867 and remained there until his retirement in 1890. The building was originally a 2 roomed custom house in 1856 but was extended to provide living quarters for the Cobham family while a nearby cottage became the Customs house. Bendigo Advertiser "The way we were" from 1999. Meeting venue: Temperance hall, View Street, circa 1900. For many years the temperance section of the community was housed in a small building in View Street, Sandhurst. The Temperance Society was formed in 1857 and the foundation stone for a new building was laid in 1895. The new building was designed and erected under the supervision of Mr. J. Blair at a cost of 1,500 pounds. The large hall was used for meeting purposes and the offices were leased out.
