Slide - DIGGERS & MINING. STORES AT THE DIGGINGS, c1852
Diggers & Mining. Stores at the diggings. One grievance of the diggers on the early fields was the high cost of most commodities. Prices were rising all over Victoria, but they rose even more steeply at the diggings, because, with drays and bullock-drivers at a premium, and with the roads in a bad state, the cost of cartage to the fields rose rapidly. Audio - The 1930s Depression Tapes - Jean Coulter, 2005
In 2005 Michele Matthews interviewed current and former residents of Bendigo for her thesis on the 1930s Depression as part of her PhD Research, with the University of Melbourne Faculty of Arts, History Department. Michele interviewed fifteen members of prominent Bendigonian families. The thesis was titled: "How Depressing?: The impact of the Great Depression on Bendigo and District 1925-1935". The Michele Matthews Collection contains fourteen audio cassette tape recordings and one written transcript. The tapes are each approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes duration. The questions presented to the interviewees explore everyday experiences they would have lived through at the time of the Depression. The questions covered sixteen relevant subjects: • Introduction and housing • Social activities, swimming, cinemas, school and games played with friends • Organizations such as the RSL, Relief Committees etc. and any effect they had on family life • The life of the single woman • Unemployment and Employment • Government Assistance • Charities Aid • Self-help • People Power, e.g. boycotts or protests • Politics • Trouble or crime • Family Health, Medical and Diet • Education • General memories of, and hardships encountered, during the DepressionNOTE: The interview tape except for the introduction is blank and, as their are no interview notes, it is assumed that the interview was abandoned for some reason. Audio tape interview with Jean Coulter (Nee May). Jean was born in 1915. In 1936 she married Raymond Coulter. Her father, David May was a fencer in Northern Victoria, and her mother worked as general duties in a hotel. She attended school at Quarry Hill State School (1921-1926) and Domestic Arts (1926-1927). The tape has been converted to a sound file. The 90 minute interview can be listened to, and the notes viewed, at the Bendigo Historical Society. For the next two years, he worked at Raynham Ceramics in East Bentleigh, making slipcast ware. During the late 1980s and 1990s, he began to make sculptural works of architactural form cast from a mixture of terracotta clay and refractory concrete. Part-glazed, the works allude to primitive industry and utilitarianism. Ceramic, John Dermer, Salt Glazed Stoneware Pot by John Dermer, 1977
John DERMER (1949- ) Born Melbourne, Victoria John Dermer studied Ceramics at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and Hawthorne State College (Diploma of Education), before working in potteries in England. Upon his return to Australia he established "Kirby's Flat Pottery" studio at Yackandandah, Victoria in 1974. John is proudly a product of the Leach/Hamada movement in ceramics. He sees this as a tradition that for him represents the essence of working with clay. The lines are pure and balanced while the forms are honest, proud and passionate. Yars of research and experience in salt glazing were rewarded in 2006 when John Dermerwon the highly prestigious Saltzbrand Keramik International Award in Koblenz, Germany. Another avenue of ceramics for which John is renowned is in the field of terra sigillata. This passion had its foundation back in 1987 when he received a major commission from Romaldo Giurgola and Pamille Berg for the new Parliament House in Canberra. During the completion of these massive pieces for the Prime Minister’s suite and Cabinet entry he had to invent and develop methods for decorating and firing the pots successfully. The completed pieces are still regarded by John as some of his finest works. John Dermer was a visiting lecturer to the Gippsland Centre of Art and Design (GCAD). This work is part of the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection. Jan Feder was an alumna of the Gippsland Campus who studied ceramics on the campus. She passed away in the mid 1980s. Her student peers raised funds to buy ceramic works in her memory.
