The National Bank of Australasia was formed in 1857. It began commercial operations in Queen Street, Melbourne in 1858. The Bank’s first branch in Kew opened at 87 High Street in 1885. A second building, on the corner of Walpole and Brougham Streets, designed by Inskip & Robertson, replaced the first branch in 1888. The second building remains, albeit in a somewhat altered state. In 1977, the President of the Kew Historical Society received two historic ‘Signature Books’ from the Kew branch of the National Bank of Australia.Important and unique record of names, occupations, addresses and signatures of customers of the branch. A number of signatures belong to individuals of statewide significance. Columns on these pages include data arranged by: No. | Date | Name and Description (to be clearly written off by a member of the bank) | Signature | Initials of Bank Officer. On each page, sequential numbering extends across the years 1894-1922. Additional pieces of advice from customers are clipped through the page over the customer's signature. This uniform was worn by Lieutenant Colonel D J Hunter OAM RFD when serving with the 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles. In 1977, the Leopard AS 1 Main Battle Tank entered service with the Royal Australian Armoured Corps. It was the replacement for the Centurion Tank, which had given sterling service since 1952 including four years on active service in South Vietnam. Although the Leopard AS1 had been in service for 23 years, with some upgrading it still has a formidable battlefield presence and will be a key weapon system in the Australian Army inventory. Tennysons Hotel Sackville Street Port Fairy Patrick Tennyson leased the Farmers Inn in 1882 and applied to change the name to Tennysons Hotel. In 1885 he bought the freehold in the Great Land Sale for 780.12.8 (Pounds, shillings and pence) and then carried out extensive renovations. This double storied addition was added in 1893. The hotel continued under various licensees until it burned down in 1977 under the name "Fishermen's Arms". Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) Sisters worked from this, their rented Collingwood Centre at 98 Charles Street, Collingwood, which opened in 1977. The Sisters left each morning taking any sterilized equipment needed with them to carry out their nursing visits in a specific area (district), They returned at the end of the day to write up their patients nursing histories, clean and reset any equipment used ready for re-sterilization, and contact other medical and community personal as necessary. From its inception as Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), in 1885, their Trained nurses (Nurses) worked in specific areas, 'districts'. The first Nurse worked east and west, between Victoria Parade and Flinders Street and, north and south, between Spencer Street and Spring Street. When a second Nurse was employed they divided this area at Elizabeth Street so each Nurse could attend to patients in the same area giving continuity of care. Gradually over the years, Melbourne District Nursing Service (MDNS), later known as Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) from 1966 when they received Royal patronage, opened Centres throughout the Melbourne Metropolitan area and outer suburbs with Heidelberg Centre opening in 1971. Their Trained nurses (Sisters) left from these Centres each morning to carry out their nursing visits in a specific area (district), taking any sterilized equipment needed with them. They returned at the end of the day to write up their patients nursing histories, clean and reset any equipment used ready for sterilization, and contact other medical and community personal as necessary. Through its expansion quality of care was not lost, the RDNS nursing staff gave best practice care in many fields of nursing and to people of many cultures with their patients ranging in age from babes, children, adults to the elderly. Some of the care provided was – Post-Natal care, Diabetic Care, Wound Care, Giving of injections and medications, Catheterizations on children and adults, Stoma care, Dementia care, Palliative Care, General care, Rehabilitation, Spinal care, Cystic Fibrosis care, Haemo-Oncology care, Home Enteral Feeding care, and IV therapy at home. Assisting with rehabilitation with an aim towards independence remained at the forefront of the Sister’s minds. All care included giving advice and support to the patient and their Carers. This sits above the window and door and runs along the building protecting the small porch. Above this, along the building, is deep decoration, including a row of concrete balusters and above and central is a concave shell shaped structure. A short dark metal spiked fence runs along the edge of the narrow garden bed. In the foreground the footpath and part of a road can be seen. In 1977 Celia Rosser was awarded the Linnaean Society of London's Jill Smythies Award for botanical illustration, and in 1995 was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia. Monash University awarded her an honorary Master of Science degree in 1981, and an honorary PhD in 1999. Banksia Rosserae is the last banksia species discovered and was named after the artist. Don Jenkins was the Managing Director of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill from 1971 to 1989. He was first employed at the Woollen Mill in 1935. The Warrnambool Woollen Mill in South Warrnambool was established in 1910 with the first manager, J.E. Bennett. By 1915 there were 160 employees and in 1969 there were 380 employees. In 1980 acrylic blankets and fabrics were made on the site and in 1982 there was a name change to Warrnambool Textiles. In 1995 the Smith Family took over the factory, following its ownership by several other Australian firms. It closed in 2000. This is an important photograph as the Warrnambool Woollen Mill was a prominent business in Warrnambool for 90 years. Don Jenkins was the Managing Director for 19 years and this is a good photograph of him and is very useful for display and research purposes. This item has been made to package a ‘Dream Sleep’ underblanket. This item was produced by the Warrnambool Textiles factory in the 1990s. In 1910 the Warrnambool Woollen Mill was established and it produced blankets, rugs etc with a staff of over 700 in the 1940s. In 1958 the Mill became the first in Australia to manufacture electric blankets. In 1968 the business was sold to Dunlop and in 1982 Dunlop sold the Mill to Onkaparinga Woollen Company. In 1983 Onkaparinga was taken over by Macquarie Worsteds and the Warrnambool Woollen Mill then traded as Warrnambool Textiles. In 2000 the Mill closed. This packaging is of some interest as a memento of the old Warrnambool Woollen Mill which operated in Warrnambool for 90 years and was a major industry in the town/city and a major employer of local residents. Deborah KLEIN (1951- ) Born Melbourne Deborah Klein is an established Australian painter and printmaker who completed a Bachelor of Fine Art, Printmaking, Chisholm Institute of Technology, Melbourne from 1982-1984. She undertook a Graduate Diploma from the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education from 1987 to 1988, and a Master of Arts, (Research), at Monash University, Gippsland Campus from 1995-1997.
