Letter from McPherson's Limited to Messrs Bendigo Electronic Co. of Australia, dated 15 November,1950. Letter is from John Byrt, Asst. Chemist for Attention Mr. Stevenson. Cover letter states they have enclosed copies of Report No. 17355 covering 'Dezincification of Brass Wire in 'Scalebuoy' Water'. Two pieces of wire were analized. In the discussion the brittleness had resulted from dezincification,which was known to be a common type of corrosion of that material. It was recommended that different wire be used. Four alloys were recommended: Cupro-nickel, Aluminium brass, Arsenical brass and Admiralty brass. The foundation stone for the Bendigo Gold District General Hospital in Lucan Street was laid in September, 1858, and the large sandstone building opened in January, 1859. In 1864, the two sandstone wings were added followed by the clock tower in 1866. In November, 1873, the Bowen Wing was opened. The hospital was incorporated in 1883. They were painted for part of a screen placed behind the Communion table in the Yirrkala church, and represented the two main, creative legends governing the lives, the behaviour and the ritual of the Aborigines belonging to a wide area of northeast Arnhem Land. Henry Beater Christian (1886-1962) , was a descendant of one of the earliest settler families in Kew. Employed at the Kew Asylum as a 'public servant', he was a skilled amateur photographer, photographing numerous scenes in Kew and on his travels around Victoria. The majority of his photographs date from 1916 to 1929. His finest photographs are housed in two photograph albums. Digital copy of a photograph from page 23 of the 47-page photograph album containing 261 gelatinous silver images, loaned by Diane Washfold with permission given to digitise and hold a copy in our collection. In the 1920s, the photographer travelled throughout Victoria, including on the west coast from Port Campbell to Port Fairy. Trips were presumably made by train and by foot. Lynda Tieman and her team at the Port Fairy Historical Society were able to identify a number of Henry Christian's photographs of Port Fairy, of which this is one. Schuss was advertised as Victoria’s Official Ski Journal It was issued monthly from 1935 to 1961 except during the war when summer issues covered two months. This continued after the war, but it averaged 10 issues annually over its 25 year life. Schuss was published by the Ski Club of Victoria which had a membership of 38 Ski Clubs and demanded to be recognised as the prime authority on skiing in the state. The other 30 ski clubs with 85% of the members disagreed and the politics of skiing became heated. These clubs formed the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs with their own journal, Ski Horizon. With the establishment of the Victorian Ski Association, Ski-Horizon published its last issue in Nov - Dec. 1955 and the role of the official journal was fully taken over by “Schuss”. This item is significant because it contains stories, images and information documenting the development of the ski industry in Victoria.The journal features stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. Items related to the Falls Creek Area in this issue include:- Page 83 - Skyline Lodge is ready for the winter after extensive work has been carried out during the summer. Handwritten copy of a newspaper report on an explosion at the New Chum Consolidated Mine. The explosion occurred about 7.30 am on Friday 21/1/1881 when a fire broke out in the engine house. Some dynamite and caps had been placed in the engine house for convenience sake. Seven men were injured. They were T. This is a set of four photographs of a visit to the Army Survey Regiment by Miss Victoria on the 19th of April 1986. Her visit was hosted by the CO - LTCOL Don Swiney MBE. Although a list of Miss Victoria former winners is available on-line, the visitor is not identified as it is unclear she was the 1985 or 1986 winner. Greg Moore thinks John Patrick was the moderator and they had a very highly qualified adjudicator from the debating society. It would have happened in about 1985 and there were only a few of them. Greg Moore thinks this one was on, "The Genus Eucalyptus Should Be Sub-divided." The debate was decided in the affirmative. Pru Sanderson, in her groundbreaking ‘City of Kew Urban Conservation Study : Volume 2 - Development History’ (1988), summarised the periods of urban development and subdivisions of land in Kew. The periods that she identified included 1845-1880, 1880-1893, 1893-1921, 1921-1933, 1933-1943, and Post-War Development. These periods were selected as they represented periods of rapid growth or decline in urban development. An obvious starting point for Sanderson’s groupings involved population growth and the associated economic cycles. These cycles also highlighted urban expansion onto land that was predominantly rural, although in other cases it represented the decline and breakup of large estates. A number of the plans in the Kew Historical Society’s collection can also be found in other collections, such as those of the State Library of Victoria and the Boroondara Library Service. A number are however unique to the collection.The Kew Historical Society collection includes almost 100 subdivision plans pertaining to suburbs of the City of Melbourne. Most of these are of Kew, Kew East or Studley Park, although a smaller number are plans of Camberwell, Deepdene, Balwyn and Hawthorn. It is believed that the majority of the plans were gifted to the Society by persons connected with the real estate firm - J. R. Mathers and McMillan, 136 Cotham Road, Kew. The Plans in the collection are rarely in pristine form, being working plans on which the agent would write notes and record lots sold and the prices of these. The subdivision plans are historically significant examples of the growth of urban Melbourne from the beginning of the 20th Century up until the 1980s. A number of the plans are double-sided and often include a photograph on the reverse. A number of the latter are by noted photographers such as J.E. Barnes.The Warne Estate included four lots in Argyle Street, Kew. It represents a typical small-scale subdivision in this area. The lots for sale must have been further divided as there are now more houses in the street than there were blocks advertised in the subdivision. The agent left the proximity of the Outer Circle Railway off the plan. The Railway would have run along the triangular shaped lot 4. Two black and white post cards of the Olympic swimming pool in Cato lake c 1950's. The Rose Series P 14901 shows the swimming pool and lake with the swimming pool dominating the photograph. Four flag posts are clearly visible and the pool connected to the edge of the lake. The Rose Series P 14012 also shows the Olympic pool but more of the lake and boundary. with seating around the lake. In March 1957 Cato Lake was emptied for construction of the Olympic pool and officially opened on 15.11.1958. Twenty seven years later In January 1985 the pool was found to be leaking and Borough Council in February banned further use of the Olympic pool. It is frequently called the shorter name (The Royal Society of Arts) and the related RSA acronym. This certificate informs Robin Boyd that he has been elected Fellow of this society. This plaque was made to commemorate the generous funds donated Mr A.M Nicholas in 1936 almost entirely funding the building of the new Mission to Seamen at Port Melbourne opened in 1937. Mr Nicholas died in Feb 1937. The new building was opened on the 4th of December 1937 by Lord Huntingfield, the plaque was dedicated and unveiled the same by his nephew Mr Nicholas Lightfoot. The plaque was removed from the building which ws demolished in 1995. The plaque is really similar to the memorial plaque made in memory of Ethel Godfrey (see item 2053).Mr Nicholas together with Mr HW Shmith organised rights to produce Aspirin aka ASPRO in Australia in 1915 during WW1. The Nicholas Family were significant philanthropists in Melbourne and Victoria and this plaque commemorates his gift to the Mission for visiting seamen between 1937 and late 20th C. The collection of thirteen model horse drawn vehicles were carefully handmade by Mr Chas W Davis 1925 - 2002. He was a talented artist and saw doctor. This model of a horse drawn Small Wheel Lorry replicates the vehicle that enjoyed respect from the public during the 1880's and early 1900's. A model of a Small Wheel Lorry with a long four spoked wheeled wooden flay tray drawn by a brown horse. The wooden shafts are to control the horse whilst working. It has a grey wooden ice box with a metal lid with ICE painted in black letters inside a black lined outline on the side. On the side of they lorry or dray is painted WOOD - COAL - COKE - C. MEE LA1271 in black paint. These are long strong carts or drays without fixed sides for carrying heavy loads. They were the truck of the horse drawn era, from the large wool bale lorry to the suburban ice and wood lorry. It has been said they had their origins in the German farm wagon.ICE is painted in black capital letters on the side of the ice box. On the side of the lorry is painted - WOOD - COAL - COKE - C. Presented to the Shire of Orbost as a history and commenoration of those who served and those who died during World War 1. This is an original Honor Roll and contains the names of Orbost men who served in W W 1. A framed memorial roll of honour for those from the Shire of Orbost who served at Gallipoli, Palestine and France. It is framed under glass with a large wooden frame.
