One of a collection of photographs from the Iggsten Estate. Woman in photo may be Florence Iggsten. Post Office lane ran from Main Street to Reid Street, and much of it is now the car park for the IGA Supermarket. The Main Street end between the supermarket and the post office is closed to all but pedestrian traffic, and is now called Gollings Square. It is a rest area with trees, garden, sculptures and benches.Colour photograph taken in Post Office Lane, Rutherglen. Badge - Gripman - 13 - Clifton Hill, Tramway Board, c1916
Use to identify a tramway employee - Clifton Hill car house or depot. Would have allowed free travel when in uniform to and from work. Used possibly from mid 1910's when the Tramway Board was formed until it was replaced by the MMTB in 1921 or when a different identification system was implemented. Most likely made by Stokes and Sons - possible imprint covered by the leather part.Demonstrates the method of identifying cable tram employees. Round pressed brass badge with the words "Gripman" pressed into the centre of the badge around the top portion of the badge, the letters "C13H. Has a nickel-plated finish with the Tramways Board logo on the lower part of the badge. On the rear of the badge, two metal lugs have been soldered onto the badge and a two-piece leather strap with a buttonhole cut into it to enable it to be worn on a uniform. Photograph - Photograph - Black and White, William and Sarah Wright, The first half of the 20th Century
William Wright was a gold miner and his wife's name was Sarah. They lived at Laura Villa, Smeaton. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank Wright their son was born and attended Smeaton State School and was a renown resident of Smeaton. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia. Black and White print of Bendigo SECV Bendigo tram 18 at Charing Cross terminus for the Eaglehawk route with a single truck car crossing behind heading for Golden Square. Trams have dash canopy lights, but no large white strip under the drivers windows. Photo not dated but appears to be at during early 1960's. Tram 18 has White Horse Whiskey ad on front dash panel, SEC Roof ad "Electricity best for Cooking" and a "CASTROL" ad, and showing destination of "Eaglehawk". Single truck car has SEC roof ad "You'll Cook better electrically" and a roof ad for "B.J. Osborn Plumbing Service" ad. Has City Club Hotel and Plaza Theatre buildings in background. Gives details of the itinerary for the trip using a 280HP Rail car trip with the forward portion via North Geelong. Duplicated using the Gestetner process. Note the knowledge of the time, with horse tram bodies being reused to form some of the early ESCo. trams. Second copy from donation of the Tom Murray Estate added 25-11-2016 and 3rd copy from Keith Kings papers added 19-3-2017. Set of two copy photographs. Photograph, Black and White of MMTB trams. Both photographs have arrows drawn on them pointing to the top of the cross bench seating windows where the unique drop bar latches appear. These were apparently unique to this class of tram. .1 - K class No. 100 - probably about 1920. Note the twin trolley poles on this single truck car when new. This car also apparently entered service with air brakes. .2 - K class No. 97 - probably about 1920. Photo taken in Glenferrie Road Malvern at High Street. Keith has noted on both prints the in-service dates, though the MMTB had taken over around that time, both painted with "Municipal Tramways" lettering.In ink on the rear: .1 -" Melbourne K97 - probably about 1920 - In service 3.3.1920, with "Municipal Tramways" lettering though M&MTB formed 1.11.1919. Newspaper clipping titled: “The trams that gave a better service” The Leader, Wednesday, April 15, 1981 Photo and text Alf Twentyman, cable trams Expert on cable trams. Purchased 2 cable tram cars for 20 pounds each in 1940. Also bought one of the dummies that pulled the cars for 30 shillings. Vehicles renovated and stored in his backyard in Bastings St Northcote. Spends hours each day restoring trams to their 1890 condition. Life member of Tramway Museum Society. End of cable tram era began in 1925, when State Government ordered a start of conversion to electric trams. Conversion took 15 years. "I've seen a tram go up in the air" by Rachel Wells & Tate Papworth Tram derailment in Cotham Rd, Kew, caused when a car collided with the 109 tram causing it to crash through a fence. About 20 people were on the tram, with two being taken to hospital. Two occupants from the car were also taken to hospital. Tram was taken back to the depot for investigation. "'Cheap as chips' Kew tram's horrid history" by Zach Hope & Tate Papworth Tram 3011 has been involved in at least 3 derailments according to Yarra Trams. Union spokesperson Phil Altieri said the poor design of the Citadis C-class model was to blame for the latest derailment. Black and white negative, by Wal Jack, of S class 168 on the western road at Footscray Tram depot. Two other S Class cars are behind 168 and on the other roads is a further S Class and X1 Class car. Shows the depot layout. There are three buses in the yard - advised by Paul Kennelly via David Kemp by e-mail: Two Leyland Cubs sandwiching a Federal B20, all with MMTB Preston Workshops bodies. The Leyland Cub closest to the camera is No 49 new 8/1936. This bus had been re-engined to Diesel by this time. May explain the missing engine cover. The other Leyland Cub maybe in the same 41-50 number sequence.
