The donor George Lister Coop was about 19 years of age when he took this photo. It is one of a small series of photos donated by him that relate to Mont Albert and Surrey Hills stations. He has always had an interest in railways and there are other examples of his documentation of railway history in other collections contributing to this database. This documents the original building on the northern platform of the Mont Albert station. The railway line was extended out to Lilydale with work commencing in 1882. It is not known exactly when the Mont Albert station was built, but it opened in 1890. It is presumed that this building was demolished when the third line was constructed in 1971. The FJ Holden is iconic in Australian motoring history. It was made in Australia by Holden from 1953 to 1956. During the 1950s, Holden dominated the Australian car market and by 1958 sales accounted for over 40 per cent of total car sales in Australia. The Redex Reliability Trial 1953 -The first Redex round-Australia reliability trial covered of 6,500 miles (10,500 km), and had a first prize of £1,000. It attracted both amateur and professional drivers in a variety of cars. The route passed through Brisbane, Rockhampton, Townsville, Darwin, Alice Springs, Adelaide and Melbourne before returning to Sydney and attracted much public interest. At the time the idea of driving huge distances around the country in ordinary cars was novel and the logistics were challenging. In many parts of the country there simply wasn’t adequate accommodation or suitably located refuelling stops. The Shell Company facilitated the race by placing petrol dumps along the 5000 km route between Townsville and Adelaide. The race began at the Sydney Showground on 30 August when 192 cars left at three-minute intervals. Of the twenty top finalists, two thirds were sponsored. Ken Tubman and John Marshall won the trial in a Peugeot 203. A black & white photo taken from near 688 Whitehorse Road. Surrey Panels was started by Maurice Dalzell (Maurie) Costello (1918-2000) in 1948, soon after the first Holden was released. Maurie later brought his sons Alan, Robert and Brian into the business. F H Stevens Motors started in North Balwyn at a similar time and in 1982 was taken over by the Costello brothers, with Robert as General Manager. Members of the Costello family have been around the Surrey Hills area for many decades. Maurie’s parents Thomas Maurice and Mabel Isabel Costello lived at 43 Box Hill Crescent, Mont Albert North. Thomas was a cattle dealer and related to the Costellos of Costello’s Jersey Dairy (demolished) in Mont Albert Road, Balwyn. Prior to starting the business Maurie is listed as a market gardener living with his parents in Box Hill Crescent. He married Mavis Jean Guillerme in 1942. Surrey Motors and Surrey Panels are well known businesses serving the Surrey Hills community for decades.A small booklet, yellow in colour, designed to fit in the glove box of a car. It is stapled on the spine in 2 places and consists of 12 pages. Some pages are designed for the owner to fill in with their personal details. There is advice regarding emergency phone calls, what to do in the event of an accident, towing, 'at fault' information, insurance, location and services of Surrey Panels and F H Stevens Motors. David Staig Jnr established this business in 1927 on the corner of Canterbury Road and Revers Street. He lived at 355 Canterbury Road, one of a series of shops (with living accommodation) owned and built in c1885 by Thomas C Hyde. G Staig (farmer) was the first in the family to occupy this, followed by James Staig (carpenter), then David Staig Snr (blacksmith) and David Staig Jnr. Bill Steiner was the chief mechanic at The Principal Garage; his apprentice Frank Senior eventually bought the business from David Staig and it became Senior's Garage. In 2020 there is a Shell service station and a Coles Express on the site. The Staig family were long-time residents of the area and this photo documents part of their business history. Crumps Dairy (Milk Pasteurising Depot) was located at 6 Benson Street, Surrey Hills on the corner of Weybridge Street until c1973. It was demolished after it had been badly vandalised. The business closed after cartons replaced glassperishables including milk, bread, meat and fruit and vegetables bottles for sale of milk. It was one of many small local facilities for processing and delivering milk that existed from the early 1920s. Eric William Walker Crump (1903-1981) headed the family business. Also involved were Kevin Eric Crump, Eric William Scanlan. NB/ Also held in this collection is a copy of a project by Chatham Primary School student, Susanne Pascoe, dated 1956 which includes photos of the dairy's operations. An oral history by Dave Croft, a driver for the dairy, who lived close by, is also relevant. The account also mentions 'Towt'. Canterbury Oliver Towt (1890-1962) was another dairyman whose premises was on the corner of Chatham and Mont Albert Roads.This is material evidence of business practice c1920s-1960s when accounts for goods received, especially perishables, were often hand-delivered on a weekly basis, with monies owed collected at the door. A paper account printed red on cream (discoloured) paper with the details of the date, account holder and address typed in and the amount owed hand-written in blue ink. R J Mercer was the butcher at 112 Union Road. This property has a long history of being a butcher's shop beginning from c1904. He took over from Edward Lloyd in 1951. Spotless Dry Cleaners were at 104 Union Road.This is an important photo as there are few known colour images of the station prior to the installation of the third line in the early 1970s, which resulted in the demolition of the station built in 1883. It is also significant as a record of the housing along the south side of Stirling Crescent which was later replaced by light industry.A digital colour photo of Surrey Hills railway station taken from the overhead pedestrian footbridge looking towards Canterbury. Both tracks and the verandas on either side of the line can be seen, as can the railway gates in the open position and the signal box, beside which is a large palm tree. A section of red goods vans are positioned in the adjacent goods yard. Some of the businesses and advertising hoardings in Union Road can be seen in the background.
