This set of nine photographs was taken at an Army Survey Regiment Australian Rules Football social game at Golden Square Football Oval, Victoria in 1995. It is possible the game was between Product Construction Squadron and Data Acquisition Squadron, as it is apparent there are a mixture of Officers, WOs SGTs, CPLs and SPRs in each of the two teams. It is unlikely it was against another unit as it seems the CO LTCOL Duncan Burns and his counterpart are involved in the coin toss, and neither was wearing football boots. This collection of 17 photos was most likely taken in c1978-1980. The AUTOMAP 1 computer assisted cartography and mapping system was introduced in 1975. The components of AUTOMAP 1 were the Input Sub-System of four Wild B8s stereoplotters and three Gradicon digitising tables, the Optical Line Following Sub-System – Gerber OLF, the Verification Sub-System – Gerber 1442 drum plotter, the General Purpose Sub-system – HP21MX computer and the Output Sub-System – Gerber 1232 flatbed plotter). The first map was published in 1978 (Strickland 3665-3, 1:50,000). AUTOMAP 1 was the first computer assisted cartography and mapping system utilised by the Survey Corps and was the first system used by Australian mapping organisations. This is a set of 23 photographs taken at the combined Officer, Warrant Officer and Sergeant’s Mess Summer Ball held at the Army Survey Regiment (ASR), Fortuna Villa on the 25th of February, 1995. The Summer Ball was one of the last large scale formal functions held at Fortuna Villa before ASR’s closure the following year. Photos of personnel and their guests was taken on their arrival near the Pompeii Fountain in the gardens at the front of the main building. The Ball and Dinner was held at the rear of Fortuna Villa in temporary 20’ x 30’ Army tents set up on the roadway in front of the transport compound. SERCO contract staff provided the catering and the ASR’s Other Ranks performed stewarding and kitchen hand duties. The KLIMSCH Commodore camera was introduced in 1953 and was the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. It was replaced with a new model of the same size in 1979. The new model with its computer-based interface provided productivity gains with improved speed and its consistent results led to less wastage in time and materials. These two photographs were taken at Bones Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the RAAF School of Radio at Laverton on the 10th of November 1977. The two units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cricket, cross country, golf, sailing, squash, softball, tennis, touch football, rifle shooting, tug-of-war and volleyball. The “big bone” trophy comprising a large bone from a beast housed inside a wooden framed glass case, was awarded to the winner of the day competition. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and billiards/snooker. The “little bone” (a mounted chicken bone) was the consolation trophy awarded to the winner of the evening competition. The 3-hour bus trip for the visiting unit on their return was typically very raucous. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand.The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. These ten photographs of the Ultra-MAN-III Printing Presses were probably taken circa 1970s to 1980s in Lithographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. Although most photos are not annotated except for photos .1, .3P, .6P; most personnel are positively identified. The two Ultra-MAN-III Printing Presses were made in Germany at a standard map size format and introduced in June 1962 as a two-colour offset press with improved safety features. With an upgrade to a third colour deck in 1968, productivity greatly improved as the two presses could print a five colour standard topographic map in two passes, rather than the three passes before their upgrade. They were replaced with a single Heidelberg Speedmaster 102 five colour Printing Press in 1990. c1970s to c1980s.This is a set of photographs of the Ultra-MAN-III Printing Press operational at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo c1970s to c1980s. This set of 11 colour photographs were taken at a drill rehearsal probably in October 1990 for the Army Survey Regiment’s Freedom of Entry parade at Bendigo. WO1 Colin Cuskelly was acting as the escorted Bendigo Lord Mayor on an inspection of the troops. The Freedom of Entry to the City took place on the 26th of October 1990. This was an honour first conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the Army Survey Regiment in 1970. The parade was the fifth time the unit exercised its freedom of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The Regiment also exercised its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980, 1985 and 1995. See Item 6248P for a photograph taken and more detail of the Freedom of Entry parade. This collection of 17 photos was most likely taken in Lithographic Squadron, Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1970s. Although these photos are not annotated most personnel are positively identified. Some photos are cropped enlargements of previous photos.
