This portable, hand held visual signalling lamp was used for optical communication via Morse code. It comprises the metal encased Aldis lamp with electrical cord and its associated green-painted, hinged wooden carrying case, which has a metal clasp and leather hand grip. Larger versions of these lamps are fixed on ships or pedestals and have shutters on the front that are opened and closed to transmit signals. Smaller hand held versions like the Point Hicks example have a concave mirror that is tilted to focus the light into pulse signals via a trigger. The lamps were pioneered by the British navy in the late nineteenth century and continue to be used to the present day.317 Details on the Point Hicks lamp include a serial number and other information. Another Aldis lamp and case remaining at Cape Nelson Lightstation dates to 1960 and has the initials of the Department of Transport, which at that time incorporated the Commonwealth Lighthouse Service. Wilsons Promontory also has an Aldis lamp and case that dates from around the same year. A lamp formerly at Cape Schanck has disappeared. The most memorable of these of course was his best-ever pacer, a 1966 colt he named Monara. It won successive A. G. Hunter Cups in 1973 and 74, and many other races – so often with this brilliant beginner going to the lead and then Don playing cat-and-mouse tactics out in front before dashing this son of Dignus away and holding off all comers. Those who may remember the 1972 Inter Dominion Final when Don was having a little holiday, will agree Monara was something beaten into second place that night. Don won many races on his brother Eric’s trotter Just Money, along with Nelson’s Report, Lauries Legacy and Kara Miss, and filled in well when winning the 1965 Warragul Cup driving the great little Macaree, and the 1967 Victoria Derby driving Kelly Kid. When the Victorian Trainers and Drivers Association formed in 1968, he was elected to its first committee. Don is also the father of Trevor and Stephen, both well known horsemen of a few seasons back. Dixon, VI. 7290.This item has historical signifigance as a an example of Australian military uniform dating presemably to World War II. Military peak cap, dark green. Brown leather chinstrap, attached by buttons on either side of visor with lettering 'AUSTRALIAN MILITARY FORCES' and Australian army insignia. Top of cap has double row of top stitching in dark yellow thread. Metal rimmed air holes (two) on each side under top of cap. Inner band made of brown leather embossed or printed with maker inscription. Rear of inner band has a row of rectangles punched through leather .50 mm in length, 22 in total, threaded through with gold coloured ribbon, tied together at centre back. Inner cap lining made of pale gold fabric, with diamond shaped liner/swear shield attached and topstitched in gold thread. Programme of a Legacy Demonstration at the Melbourne Town Hall on 29th October 1936. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to 1979, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall. This report highlights the ongoing need to review and if necessary update and change policies and priorities if need be. The report explains that to provide recommendations and suggestions three working parties were established with two Legatees in charge of each group. In group1, 47 Legatees were involved, group 2&3, 59 Legatees involved in each group. Each group had a budget to work to and designated areas of Legacy activities to investigate and report on e.g. group1 would report on Accommodation, Housing, Handicapped Dependants, Firewood - refer to appendix A. Reports and suggestions are made in appendix B. Some recommendations suggest that Legacy and Legatees do not cease providing services but refer suitable applicants on to similar activities with other organisations if the need arises. This was due to declining numbers of Legatees to supervise, and those under the care of Legacy to paricipate. Due to declining numbers of Legatees and the number of families requiring help in certain areas, the report shows that Legacy needs to alter the way in which it delivers some of the services to Widows and families but still maintain the services that Legacy has provided previously. Part of the Laby Collection of material donated by the family of TH Laby and daughters Jean and Betty in August 2014. This particular book is one of two copies acquired together as part of the Laby Collection, the other being inscribed with Betty’s name, suggesting that this volume belonged to Jean Laby.
