Drawing shows the proposed layout of the Swanston St underground tram line at Flinders St. Shows the tram stop, the layout of the access to the stop, Flinders St and Princes Bridge stations, the demolition of Young and Jacksons Hotel, a railway booking office. Photograph - Cable tram gripman's compartment with levers, K McCarthy
Photograph shows part of the preserved cable grip car number 1 and trailer car number 1 in a large glass covered display case in Russell Street behind the (then) Melbourne Museum and State Library. The photograph shows the gripman's compartment with two brake levers and the central grip lever. At the top of the photo above the levers is curved metal beam to which a block and tackle were fastened to lift and lower the grip into the tunnel. At either end of the compartment is a knee high board with whole at the top that fitted into slots between the end traverse seats to stop winter drafts blowing across the gripman's feet. Photograph - VR tram 36, 29 at St Kilda Station, 12 January 1954
The photograph shows VR tram 36 at St Kilda Railway Station with the driver in summer jacket raising the rear trolley pole. The tram displays destination Vautier St, an intermediate terminus about three kms from the station. VR tram 29 is also arriving at the terminus with weather blinds and saloon sunshades raised to shunt over tram 36. Its destination sign is indistinct but appears to be Middle Brighton or Brighton Beach. This movement of multiple shunting was common in the afternoon peak. Up to three trams would depart simultaneously following the arrival of a busy electric train from the city. The first tram would travel limited express to Brighton Beach; the second tram also ran limited express to the intermediate terminus at Middle Brighton; the last tram stopped all stops to Vaitier St, then return to repeat the same run. Official M&MTB photograph showing X1 class tram No. 462 at the Footscray Station stop No. 60 with the destination blind showing 'Ballarat Rd'. The trolley pole is set for this trip and several passengers are seated inside. On the roadway adjacent to the open front door stand a uniformed driver and conductress in conversation. As the short Footscray routes were usually driver-only operations and the Footscray Station stop was the busiest, the conductress is likely stationed here to collect fares before each tram's arrival and departure. In the background are a fish and chip shop displaying an advertisement for Savoy Peanuts on its double storey facade and a radio and television sales shop. Span and trolley wires can be seen behind the tram curving into Irving St as part of the southern route to Williamstown Rd route. The photo shows the intersection of Domain Road and St Kilda Road with W class tram 375 (Melbourne) at the tram stop for Domain Road after the closure of the cable tram lines in St Kilda Road, with installation of temporary tracks on the western side of St Kilda Road. Temporary platforms have been installed. Many passengers are waiting at the stop. The former cable tram lines are in position though some of the outbound cable tram track in St Kilda Road has been removed. There is a conductor on the outbound or southbound platform.
