This quartz and bluestone monument pays tribute to James Galloway the founder of the the eight-hour day system that gave workers the right to stop work after 8 hours without any penalty. The system was widely celebrated as a world first and Australia became known as a workingman’s paradise. Eight hour day is translated as: Eight hours of work, eight hours of leisure and eight hours of rest. In 1880, the 8hr day Anniversary Committee decided to mark the establishment of the 8hrs day by erecting a monument to the memory of the pioneer of the 8hr movement in the colony, James Galloway. The campaign for the Galloway monument was so successful that one year later on 21 April 1881, and after the longest 8hrs day procession to that date, the Mayor of the City, Councillor A T Morrison, imbarred the monument at the foot of Sturt Street, Ballarat. The monument is of historic significance to the people of BallaratGranite spire with four cast iron drinking fountains and marble tablets. The Opera House article reports on the disparaging opinion of Mr Colin Badger, director of the Council of Adult Education, pn the Sydney Opera House.The other article reports on the speech given by Mr WW Shugg, Federal President of RAIA as a memorial tribute to Robin Boyd at the RAIA building. Robin Boyd’s desk cupboard contained two exercise books (item D482.1-D482.2) and assorted articles, essays and other material regarding the building of the Sydney Opera House, inserted inside the front cover of Walkabout magazine, July 1966 (item P1377). This publication is one of those inserts. Photographs of handicap dependents at enjoying music and dance from a military band that featured in an edition of the Answer. There were frequent events and activities organised by Melbourne Legacy for handicapped dependents. The Junior Legatees, with many mums and friends of Legacy went to the Defence Force School at Watsonia Barracks and were treated to a performance by the 2/10 Medium Regiment Band. The Bandmaster was WOI Dave Farrell and there was a surprise visit by a clown. According to the article "Former JL Sharon Taylor, now a corporal with 'Visits Protocol and Ceremonial' at the Defence Centre - Melbourne, gave a moving tribute to Legacy in recognition of the support she had received as a young girl. Junior Legatees were given an opportunity to play some of the musical instruments and the enjoyment is evident as the photos show." Black and white photograph of cattle and horses in the Grand Parade on the Melbourne Showgrounds Main Arena, 1954. In 1910, horses and cattle at the Royal Melbourne Show were paraded together for the first time in a ‘Massed’ (Grand) Parade. This innovation proved very popular with exhibitors and the general public alike. The Grand Parade continued to be a Show highlight and in 1952, with the inclusion of all horses for the first time, it became even more of a spectacle. Together with the animals, harness vehicles and Clydesdale wagons were included in the Grand Parade. The following year, as a tribute to the new Queen Elizabeth II, the annual show was named the Coronation Show and for the first time floats from various country agricultural societies were included in the Grand Parade. The vase was made from the liquefaction that came out of the Christchurch earthquake of 22 February 2011. The vase was gifted to the College by Professor Edward Shipton (known as Ted) on his retirement as Dean of the Faculty of Pain Medicine, and from Council. Professor Shipton is from New Zealand. The gift was accompanied by a card with the following inscription: "Thank you for allowing me to be a small part of your great institution as Councillor and Faculty Dean these past two years. My gift to the College is a small vase. This vase was made from the liquefaction that came out of the 22 February 2011 Christchurch Earthquake. The photograph was created by Geelong artist Julian Aird and framed by a business in Geelong. The window in the photograph is of the 1928 stained glass window and the baptism fold in the St Nicholas' Seamen's Chapel at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, which were installed at Flagstaff Hill's for the Chapel's opening in 1981. About the Window - The window in this photograph, once known as the Dr Connell Memorial Window, was a feature of an external wall adjacent to the Women’s and Children’s Wards of Warrnambool Hospital. Honorary Doctors had played a significant role in the operation of the hospital between the years 1900 to 1939. One of these doctors was Dr. Connell, who passed away in 1928. The green glass memorial nameplate has an inscription that dedicates the window to Dr. Connell. The inscription reads: "A tribute to Egbert John Connell M.B.B.S. who for 30 years rendered devoted and valuable service to this institution. Obiit April 4th 1928, A.D." The photograph's significance lies in the subject of the stained glass window, and its connection with the history of the local Warrnambool Base Hospital, dating to Dr Connell's work there in the early 20th century.This photograph captures the light shining through an arched, stained glass window behind a baptismal font. The Heidelberg School Artists Trail was established in about 1999 with about 52 signs across four local governemnt areas including Nillumbik and Banyule. This one located in Wingrove Park Eltham pays tribute to Walter Withers and his painting "The Silent Guns" Transcription of sign: Walter Withers – The Silent Gums, 1909 Walter Withers painted this tranquil pastoral scene in the vicinity this park. Here he has captured the dairy cattle belonging to local Eltham farmer, Mr. Tom Orr, feeding and resting in the shade of the tall Manna gums. Wither’s daughter, Nan recalled how her father, for inspiration, often visited the property of their neighbour, Mr. Tom Orr, and in his later years, Withers painted many landscapes depicting Mr Orr’s sheep and dairy cattle. The imposing white marble statue of William Wallace by Percival Ball stands approximately 8 feet tall with helmet and sward. The statue is mounted on a granite base with a marble plaque inscribed in praise of William Wallace, the Scottish warrior famous for leading the defeat of English forces at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297. The artwork is located in the Botanic Gardens in Ballarat, Victoria and can be seen upon entry from the main gates. Sculpted by Percival Ball of Melbourne and unveiled in 1889, the statue was funded by a £3000 bequest to the gardens by James Russell Thomson, a Scottish miner who made his fortune during the Victorian gold rush. It was intended as a tribute to Thomson’s Scottish origins. 'The distinctive lyrebird firescreen has become a popular feature of the lounge. It is not known how long it has stood in this position, but it appears to have been custom-made for the fireplace. Firescreens are not clearly shown in early photographs. It is popularly believed that the fenders on the floor..came from the Victorian Railways workshops and were made from railway line metal..' It is not known whether the lyrebird fire screen in the Chalet Lounge was dedicated to Alice Manfield and her study into local lyrebirds, but this popular feature is a most appropriate tribute." Debbie LLOYD Debbie Lloyd returned to study in 2005 completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual Arts) degree at the University of Ballarat (now Federation University) in 2007, with honours the following year. She returned to the university as Artist in Residence in 2009. During her time at the University Debbie exhibited in many group exhibitions and her work was selected for the National Graduates Show at PICA in Western Australia. Debbie’s first solo exhibition was held at Space22 in Ballarat, towards the end of 2010. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. In these works I have used everyday objects, and shapes, repeated, reconfigured and recontextualised to provide the viewer with visual challenges that slow down and complicate the reading of the work. In the words of a former lecturer of mine, who kindly delivered the opening speech at one of my exhibitions – There is in Debbie’s work a belief in the transcendental power of repetition, a tribute in many respects to the fact that human kind is defined by nothing more noble and uplifting than its ability and obligation to persist." Schuss was advertised as Victoria’s Official Ski Journal It was issued monthly from 1935 to 1961 except during the war when summer issues covered two months. This continued after the war, but it averaged 10 issues annually over its 25 year life. Schuss was published by the Ski Club of Victoria which had a membership of 38 Ski Clubs and demanded to be recognised as the prime authority on skiing in the state. The other 30 ski clubs with 85% of the members disagreed and the politics of skiing became heated. These clubs formed the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs with their own journal, Ski Horizon. With the establishment of the Victorian Ski Association, Ski-Horizon published its last issue in Nov - Dec. 1955 and the role of the official journal was fully taken over by “Schuss”. This item is significant because it contains stories, images and information documenting the development of the ski facilities at Falls Creek.The journal features stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. The cover includes a photo of the Jane Tinsley running in the slalom on the Bull Run by Eric Burt. Pages 200 - 202 feature a detailed tribute to George Fitzgerald, a pioneer of Omeo and the Bogong High Plains. Page 216 gives a brief description of Falls Creek as part of an article "Available Ski Resorts in Victoria" followed on Page 221 by an article declaring the opening of the Village Ski Tow on the Queen's Birthday weekend. The first ride was given to Bernhard Plohberger, the Tow Manager and Ski School Instructor. Other developments at Falls Creek were outlined.
