Photograph, Knox Collection, Survey camp for Colac-Beech Forest railway, 1901, 1901
Plans for a rail connection between Colac and Beech Forest had been drawn up in 1884 and 1889 but proofed inconclusive because of the enormous cost involved in building a railway in such difficult terrain. Because of the financial depression in the early 1890s such expenditure went of hold. Towards the end of the decade planners recognised that a narrow gauge could be a viable alternative and it was taken up by the community, Parliamentary representatives and the government, although Victorian Railways administration was against the idea. This was overridden. The 1898 Parliament approved a 2 foot 6 inch gauge from Colac to Beech Forest although strict financial limits were set. The route was to be the most direct and the infrastructure the most basic. Construction began in 1900 entailing very steep grades and myriad curves until it finished in 1902. Surveyors and their assistants came before and during the track laying for the whole distance.B/W. Membership Certificate, 1960's
From Grand United Order of Oddfellows. MU100F - membership and competition. 1966-67 winners in "B" Class - Loyal Orbost Lodge.Friendly Societies were founded in the Australian Colonies in the mid-19th Century by immigrants from England who had been members in Societies which dated back to the 18th Century. Like all working people these immigrants experienced sickness, accidents, unemployment, death and burial. They needed help of like fellows to tide their families over these times. So they formed a branch of one of the Friendly Societies back in the mother country. The idea was to make fixed contributions to a fund and when they were off work they would receive a payment. When they died funeral benefits would be paid and the widow and children would be cared for. It was a form of local insurance for hard times. This was a time of 'look after yourself' as the Colonial Governments did not provide pensions or benefits. This item reflects those times.Membership and competition certificate from Bairnsdale district. Newspaper - Newspaper clipping, Copy, The Canberra Times, The Public Hall at Woodstock, 6 Feb 1968
Transcript of original article taken from The Canberra Times, 6 Feb 1968, p. 3., via TROVE The Public Hall at Woodstock, 20 miles north of Melbourne, is destroyed by a grass fire that appeared to start when a log still smoldering from last Wednesday's fire burst into flames. Buildings razed in Victorian fires. MELBOURNE, Monday. Fire destroyed today a hall, a church and about 2,000 acres of grass at Woodstock, 20 miles north of Melbourne. Firefighters said the blaze appeared to have started from a log still smoldering after last Wednesday's fire, claimed to have been started by sparks from the wheels of a train. Burning on a front of between a quarter mile and half a mile, the fire passed behind the general store and houses but engulfed the 100-year-old weatherboard Roman Catholic church. Firefighters prevented the blaze spreading to a nearby public hall but when they were called to fight the fire further on, the hall was caught in a fresh outbreak, and destroyed. Before being brought under control after some two hours, the fire travelled four miles, destroyed about six haystacks then burned from the town back into the bush.
