Blacksmith's Cottage and Forge
Tin, Stove Polish
One of the jobs of the housewife was to keep her stove-top looking clean and new, and a rich black colour. This was a source of pride amongst house-proud women, and also ensured a more efficient distribution of heat on their stove-tops for cooking. It was however one of the dirtiest jobs in the kitchen, requiring a lot of elbow-grease as well as a good polish paste. Local. The use of the magpie emblem denotes the emergence of a new nationalism, a pride in being Australian, as distinct from being "British", although Australians continued to see themselves as part of the greater British Empire and subjects of the King.Gold tin with push-in lid, with picture of magpie in black and white on branch. On front of tin: "Magpie" in white letters on a red background. "Stove Polish" in white letters on a blue background. 4 oz. Net. when packed. Made in Australia. On bottom of tin: "Grate & Stove Polishing Paste. Made in Australia." Side inscriptions give instructions for use. -

The Beechworth Burke Museum
Photograph, 1994
Taken in 1994, this photograph depicts the reunion of four women, all of whom were former workers at the Beechworth Shoe Factory. Pictured from left to right are: Nettie Maher, Beryl Pope, Alice Adams and Leila Doig. Nola (Nettie) Maher, who donated this photograph to the museum in 2001, was born in Beechworth on the twenty-first of December 1935. She is one of the many - primarily women - workers employed by the Beechworth Shoe Factory (also known as Pitman's Shoe Factory). Once located on Ford Street, the factory was established by Mr T. Nagle Pitman as a branch of the company Elgins Shoes, and was in operation from the first of July 1947 to the twenty-eighth of August 1961. In an interview given in 2000, Nettie recalls the close trust and friendships that were built amongst the factory workers. A sense of this bond is reflected in this reunion photograph, taken several decades later. This photograph is historically significant as it provides insight into the experiences of women factory workers in Beechworth during the twentieth century. Textile - Red Cross Quilt, 1930-1949
This quilt was purchased from an op shop in Clifton Hill, Vic. by Lois Densham, a quilter and former member of the Running Stitch group who has an interest in historic Australian quilts. The quilt has been displayed in NSW, where it was part of an exhibition of Historic Australian Quilts curated by Annette Gero and held at Old Government House, Paramatta between 5 June and 22 August 2000. Initially purchased in Clifton Hill, it originally came from a source in Highton, Geelong. It is a double bed sized quilt in the classic 'crazy' style with extensive use of herringbone and feather stitching. The pieced style of the quilt, made from squares of patchwork is similar to the style of quilts made by members of the Country Women's Association (CWA). The women sometimes made a quilt as a group activity and Lois suggested that the quilt may have been made by this group.Quilt, rectangular. Made with crazy patchwork in twelve large blocks. The blocks at each corner are fairly regular, whereas the others are full of random pieces. The patches are oversewn with hand embroidered feather stitch in different colours. In the centre there is a block with a maroon cross. Many of the pieces have central 'sprigs' of green embroidery in bullion stitch. The quilt is backed with a blue and green striped fabric.quilting patchwork, running stitch group national trust of australia (nsw), running stitch collection, densham, ms lois, geelong, quilting, patchwork, cwa -

Photograph - Portrait, Don Semmens, Mollie Sandner, Mayoress 1978 -79, c 1978
Prior to the election of female Councillors and Mayors in the 1960’s, the Lady Mayoress role was one of the few ways women could officially undertake civic duties. Mayoresses made important contributions to their local communities through their charity work and as ambassadors for their region on a state and federal level. They also undertook some Mayoral duties on occasions when their husband was unavailable. Annie Mary (Mollie) Sibson was born in England in 1904 and worked as a nursing sister at Bendigo Base Hospital until her marriage to Alec Sandner in 1933. Mollie was an active member of the community and was particularly interested in raising the participation of girls in sports and the lack of competitive sports opportunities for girls led Mollie to create an inter school tennis competition in 1944. The Mollie Sandner Cup continues to be played today and Mollie was recognised by the Sportswomens' Association of Bendigo for her contribution to women's sports. Article - Article - Women, Ballarat Girls' Technical School: Women of Note; Joan Kirner (1938 - 2015)
Joan Kirner was born on the 20th June, 1938, the only child of John Keith Hood and Beryl Edith Cole, whose belief that girls could do anything holds importance in explaining Joan's commitment to improving the status of girls and women Joan graduated from Melbourne University in 1958, and was sent to Ballarat where she taught at the Ballarat Girls' Technical College. Like all women at the time, her marriage to her husband, Ron, a teacher at the Ballarat Junior Technical School in 1960, meant that she was precluded from permanency in the service, an injustice which fueled much of her activism as an education lobbyist and later, as Minister for Education. The birth of three children, and the move back to Melbourne, marked the beginning of Joan's career as a community activist. Joan Kirner's career in politics has two distinctive phases: twelve years in the Victorian Parliament (1982-1994), the remaining decades in community politics. In the Victorian parliament, Joan held the positions of Minister for Conservation, 1985, Minister for Education, 1988, Deputy Premier, 1989, and Victoria's first woman Premier, 1990 to 1992. She retired from parliament in May, 1994. She was a Co-founder of Emily's List which supports women wishing to enter Parliament. Joan Kirner introduced the Victorian Certificate of Education. Awarded Companion of the Order of Australia in 2012 and Centenary Medal in 2001.women of note, joan kirner, joan hood, melbourne university, ballarat girls' technical school, ballarat junior technical school, education lobbyist, minister for education, community activist, victorian parliament, 1982-1994, minister for conservation, deputy premier, first woman premier, emily's list, victorian certificate of education, companion of the order of australia, centenary medal -

Clothing - Apron, circa late19th to early 20th Century
An apron is an outer protective garment worn over clothes to cover the front of the body. In Victorian and Edwardian times, women were using aprons for both utility (they were easier to wash than dresses) and fashion and women's magazines and pattern companies were offering patterns to allow women to be to sew their own aprons at home. There are different styles of aprons including bib aprons, waist or half aprons, pinafores, tabards and pinner aprons. The word "apron" comes from the old French word "naperon" which means a napkin or small tablecloth. This apron is one of two similar aprons that were donated from the estate of Susan Henry nee Vedmore (1944 - 2021). It is in very good condition and appears to be more decorative (and possibly used only on special occasions) rather than everyday wear. Susan's family (Harold and Gladys Vedmore) immigrated to Australia from Wales in 1955 and settled in Warrnambool. Susan was well known in the Warrnambool community for her work supporting children and families across the district - particular those with disabilities, or those who were homeless, unemployed or isolated. Susan was the founding trustee of the "Vedmore Foundation" - a Warrnambool philanthropic trust set up in 2010 to support a range of charitable and not-for-profit causes by providing grant assistance. In 2021, she was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for services to the community. This item is an example of clothing worn by working women in the late 19th and early 20th centuryShort white cotton apron featuring gathering along the waist band and a gathered frill with scalloped edging along the bottom.
