Postcard, ESCo tram just past the intersection of Doveton St. and Sturt St
Photographically printed black and white postcard with an impressed image of an ESCo tram just past the intersection of Doveton St. and Sturt St. travelling east along the north side of Sturt. Street towing a heavily laden horse tram as a trailer. Photo appears to be taken soon after opening of the electric trams, as the tram does not have any destination box above the driver. Possibly summer 1905/1906. Numerous people in the street, some horse drawn vehicles in the photograph. Shows buildings along the south side of Sturt St. and part of the verandah of the building at the NE corner of Doveton St. For a list and description of the same base image see Archives file - "Notes on ESCo Tram towing a heavily loaded trailer" On rear is places for correspondences stamp, address. Addressed to Miss E. Freeman, in Dunedin NZ, with a hand written message. Posted in Melbourne on 28/10/1908. Sewn in three sections, with a green strip of cloth and self end papers and printed outer paper, sides glued onto board covers. Consists of 43 colour photographs (full and half page) with captions, detailed text, and two black and white photos printed in blue on end covers. Photos of Mt Buffalo, Gippsland lakes, Mornington Beach, Yarra River, Flinders St. station from the Yarra, Collins and Spring St (with two W2's - see image No. 2), Parliament House, Kiewa Hydro scheme, Eildon Weir, Swan Hill Murray River Bridge, Bendigo Post Office, Melbourne Botanical Gardens, Ballarat - Grenville and Sturt St (No. 22 - see image No. 3), Lorne, Yallourn Power Station, Hume Weir, Maroondah Weir, Great Ocean Road, Warrnambool, Portland Beach, A timber train (see image No. 4), Mildura, flax mills, Eastern Geelong and the Prime Ministers Ave, Ballarat. Block mounted, black and white (sepia toned) photo of Ballarat Horse Tram No. 1 outside the Wendouree Parade depot, late 1887, with 16 workmen standing or lying around the tramcar. Builders Photo. Tram is lettered "BALLAARAT TRAMWAY CO LIMITED". A sign on the advertising board says "Duncan & Fraser, Builders, Ballaarat". The men around the tram are dressed in trade clothes, including carpenters, painters and blacksmiths. Mounted on to preprinted card with a printed border and along the bottom edge "Richards & Co." and "Photo". See also Reg Items 1654 and 765 for different prints of the same photo. 3042.1 - Same photo, but in better condition. Has "Richards & Co Photo" on stamped on left hand side and has a red border similar to the Reg. Item 3042, but has been cut around it. Uniform - Cap, Commonwealth Government Clothing Factory Melbourne, 1950's
3044.1 SEC (Geelong) Motorman/Drivers/Conductors cap - green cloth exterior, grey cotton interior lining, brown leather internal hat band, black cotton hat band on exterior. Black plastic peak fitted with cap or with four holes for the employee badge number in the centre of the cap above the hat band. Sewn on the inside is a label "Commonwealth Government Clothing Factory Melbourne" and stamped "7 3/8". The plastic band at the front half of the cap terminating in two small SEC metal buttons on either side is not present. The holes for this are not visible - may not have been present on Geelong caps? 3044.2 - two small SEC Button badge - nickel plated silver with "Stokes" "Vic" stamped on rear. See also Reg. Demonstrates aspects of the SEC governance and monitoring system, gives information on actual tram running, tickets sold against a date. Could be used by Inspectors to check tickets on a tram. Version prior to the introduction of Pensioner fares.3045.1 - Printed form titled "Trip Way-Bill" of the SEC, Electricity Supply Department, Provincial Tramways, on thin off white paper. Gives value of tickets up to 7d, City 2d, Pensioners 2d and 3d and parcel stamps of 4d. Has space for the Run No, Conductor, Day, Date , route time and tram no. Able to be used on both sides of the sheet. Has sheet or print number of TYE 1-250 3045.2 - Photocopy of the same form with fares up to value of 1/-c, three city tickets, no pensioners and parcels of 6d. Original form to Bendigo Tramways. Under sheet number of TYE 1-250, has date of (R6/63). 3045.3 - similar to 3045.1 - but different TYE number and differences in font etc. While fare denominations to max value of 7d, has does not have City and Pensioner fares - used prior to the introduction of these fares - 1/11/1955 to 1/7/1958. Has value of tickets up to 7d, parcel tickets of 4d. Gives the opening and closing number of tickets or checks issued to the conductor, check returned by conductor, total number issued, value, returned by conductor, cash returned, Prepared in L (pound), shilling and pence format, or notes, silver and copper. Used in during the mid 1950's. Has space for hospital vouchers and area where signed by conductor. Printed on off white paper. Has form number TYE 1-280. Two copies held. On the rear of one sheet has written ink ticket denominations issues from 28/2/1963 to 1/1/1969 - seven different series, though first have then been crossed out. Repeat on second sheet. Gives value of tickets issued, including scholars and parcel tickets. 3046.2 - Lined foolscap sheet - hand written notes on fares up till June 1958, then through to 1/2/1969 - 6 different fare schedules. Form ruled in blue ink horizontally and red ink vertically with some horizontal lines. A similar form, printed only in black, without the holes also donated by Peter Watt. Has fare values up to 18c.
