Michael Forrester b.1866 Branxholme,Victoria,d.1945 age 79 years. Buried Quambatook,he was the 8th of 10 children of parents, Pat and Johanna Forrester, both buried at Wycheproof. A bachelor farmer, Michael worked on the selection property at East Towaninnie.He and his unmarried sister, Ellen Forrester, inherited some of the parents' land, sold it and lived out their final years at Quambatook. Typical of many early local residents,Michael was born into a large family and did not move far from his beginnings. Farming and family was his life. This man’s dress box contains accessories that a man would use, perhaps in a formal situation – bow ties,buttoning studs and detachable collars. The contents of the box may not be what was originally in the box. Bow ties and studs are still used on occasions but detachable collars are no longer in vogue because wash and wear shirts are freely available. Both of the companies which made the detachable collars, Pelaco and Cremorne, were based in Richmond in Melbourne. The Warrnambool jewellery business of M. Salamy and Son, has the known dates, 1912 to 1938. There were two Salamy shops, one in Timor Street, opposite the Post Office and one at 179 Liebig Street. This box and contents are retained because they are reminders of accessories men used in the past, especially for formal occasions. Also, one of the items came from the well-known Warrnmbool jewellery business of M. Salamy and Son..1 This is a circular-shaped leather box with a lid attached by stitching and a strap and a metal buckle for closing the box. Inside the box is a blue cardboard lining. The leather is scuffed. .2 & .3 These are two black cloth bow ties with metal clips at the back. The ties are housed in a blue wooden box. .4 These are seven elasticised bands for holding back shirt sleeves. Two of these are covered with red and blue cloth and five are made of silver-coloured metal .5 & .6 These are two white detachable collars. Card cases were common items used mainly by men in the 19th century. A silver card case indicated that the owner was a man of means. ‘W.Swinton’ is presumed to be William Swinton who came to Australia in 1854 and established a drapery and grocery store in Timor Street in 1865. William Swinton died in 1901 and his son, also William was Mayor of Warrnambool from 1917 to 1919. A Swinton business still exists in Timor Street today. ‘W.Wilkie’ was obviously a friend or a business acquaintance of William Swinton and may have been related to James Wilkie who came to Warrnambool in 1854 and opened a drapery shop in 1855 in Timor Street with James Butters as a partner. This is a most significant item as one that belonged to William Swinton, a prominent Warrnambool business man and a pioneer settler in the town. It also has social significance as an example of an item used by businessmen and others in the 19th centuryThis is a silver card case with a hinged lid. The silver is patterned in geometric shapes and the edges are highly ornamented with scrolls. Inside the case are five pieces of white paper which are obviously not original. From the 1860s, colonists in the Moorabbin district discovered tomato growing was very successful. Tomatoes and tomato products from the Moorabbin District won prizes as far afield as NZ., London, Philadelphia, Amsterdam, India as well as in Melbourne. Two particularly successful growers were Henry Comport of Cheltenham, and Edward Zorn at Clayton. As a result of this extensive tomato growing many factories 'sprang up' in the Moorabbin district to process the produce, one of which was the "Tom Smith Pty Ltd" factory. An Advertisement on the 29th August c1912, in the Brighton Southern Cross newspaper for Tom Smith's Tomato Sauce states that it is - "Superior. From absolutely Pure Locally Grown Tomatoes. Put up in our own bottles. A High-Grade Article. Manufactured at Highett Railway Station. Smith & Lambert Manufacturers" Phone Cheltenham 206.This item is significant because it relates to the prize-winning major industry of tomato growing that the Moorabbin colonist market gardeners commenced in the 1860s. Many tomato processing factories also sprang up in the district at that time. Because the tomato industry was virtually wiped out by a virus that attacked the plants in the very early 1900s very few tangible artefacts now remain that relate to what was once an important industry.A clear glass machine-made tomato sauce bottle. The neck of the bottle indicates that the contents were originally sealed with a cork at the top. The glass appears to be of poor quality as air bubbles are evident and was moulded, not hand-blown. The bottle is embossed on the front with the manufacturer's name, and location.
