This is a study of Melbourne Legacy by the author William Paul Healy, from April 1973 to March 1975. The author was interested because of the reputation gained by Legacy over the preceding 50 years, for successfully delivering welfare services by volunteers to widows and their dependant children. The aim of the study was to describe, analyse, explain and evaluate the work of Legacy. This has been done at great length and in summary the great value of Legacy is in the continuity of a Legatee with the one family i.e. the legatee maintained contact with the family through school, beginning work/university and other milestones in the life of a dependant family. It was thought that families in receipt of Legacy services functioned at a higher level than those who do not receive such services.Significant in that Legacy was seen as providing a high quality service. The identity discs of Australian soldiers of the First World War were initially made of aluminum and then made of a fibre material. Like other soldiers of the Great War the Australian 'Diggers' were issued an identity tag or disc. The first official disc was a small flat metal disc of aluminum, then there were two identity discs issued, made of a fibre one was a red disc the other was grey and octagonal. The discs were usually stamped with the information that the Military required. The Regimental number, Regimental name, soldiers' surname and initials and his religion were on the tag. Douglas Russell was a farmer, the son of John Russell, director of the Orbost Butter Factory for 50 years. Alex Pullar Cameron died from injuries in 1919.Two World War 1 identity tags. Mary Howlett (1840-1922) began practising as a country midwife in 1866 in the western district of Victoria. She qualified as a 'ladies monthly nurse' in 1887 and continued to practise as a nurse and midwife until 1920.She began her six months training at the Melbourne Lying-In Hospital. She was known by many as 'Auntie', and her career spanned more than 50 years. Mrs Howlett's midwifery box and contents were given to Dr Frank Forster, and he donated them to the museum collection in 1993. The contents of this box are consistent with use by a midwife, but such a box would have been cumbersome and heavy to carry around. It is possible that Mary Howlett would also have had a bag for her midwifery requirements.This midwifery box is highly significant as it includes close to the original contents of one midwife's 'professional kit' up to 1920. The contents reveal something of the professional practice of a midwife in country Victoria at that time.A wooden box with hinged lift-up lid, one drawer, and an inner wooden tray. Rests at each side inside box indicate another tray may have originally sat across the top. Pasted inside the lid is a product list from Robert McDonald (chemist and druggist). There are locks for both the main chest section and the drawer. A circular section is cut out of the bottom of the drawer. The contents of the box include, enema syringe, a red rubber douche, glass breast pump, nipple shields, a thermometer in travel case. Also includes cotton bandages, a tooth extractor, and fetal stethoscope.midwifery

Alma Isabell Ashcroft was born on the 11th of July 1920 in Newtown, Beechworth. Her father and four of her brothers worked at the Tannery, her mother was recognised as the ‘district nurse’ in the area and the family were well known and at the heart of the local community. Alma joined the Beechworth branch of the R.S.L. and at the time of the interview in 2000, had been with the R.S.L for 40-50 years. This oral history recording was part of a project conducted by Jennifer Williams in the year 2000 to capture the everyday life and struggles in Beechworth during the twentieth century. This project involved recording seventy oral histories on cassette tapes of local Beechworth residents which were then published in a book titled: Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth century Beechworth. These cassette tapes were digitised in July 2021 with funds made available by the Friends of the Burke.Alma Ashcroft’s story is significant because of her personal and familial connections with Beechworth. Her family were at the heart of the community, and Alma’s association with the RSL in Beechworth spanned 4-5 decades. During the interview with Jennifer Williams, Alma also provided a rich history of the town, the locals and her extensive family.This is a digital copy of a recording that was originally captured on a cassette tape. The cassette tape is black with a horizontal white strip and is currently stored in a clear flat plastic rectangular container. He was born and educated in Tasmania and completed a medical degree at the University of Melbourne. He commenced a medical practice in Warrnambool in 1906 and was the Honorary Medical Officer at the Warrnambool Hospital and Warrnambool’s Health Officer. His practice was at ‘Ierne’, at the corner of Spence and Kepler Streets. He was an early member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and he was prominent in community affairs in Warrnambool (foundation President of the Warrnambool Rotary Club, a member of the local Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, a long-term Trustee of the Warrnambool Methodist Church, a Warrnambool Hospital Committee member and president of the Lyndoch Hostel for the Aged committee). Dr Holmes enjoyed fishing, bowls and golf. This is an interesting medical item from the collection of Horace Iles Holmes, a doctor who was prominently associated with the professional and community life of Warrnambool for over 50 years. There is a leather strap for carrying the camera and cover over the shoulder. The initials of the owner have been printed in ink on the front of the cover which is worn in places and torn at the bottom corner. The three legs sit on a rounded metal top with a screw for attachment to a camera. The metal top has white printing. Heather Durant (nee Walton) began as an Assistant Librarian at the SMB Campus in 1951. In December 1961 she resigned from the position due to her approaching marriage. No replacement was found so she returned in a "part-time position". She progressed to head librarian. Heather resigned again in 1962 and took a break for eight years. She then returned to the school. Combining the two periods of work she was employed for almost 50 years. During her time with the University of Ballarat she made an important contribution to the operation of the SMB Library. At times she was put in charge and worked to maintain library standards and collections through her work in library acquisitions and cataloguing. Cr. W.D. Vaughan in his civic history of Kew includes a chapter (XXXII, pages 132-3) to Town Clerks and Surveyors. He states that H.H. Harrison began his career with the Borough of Kew in 1888 as his predecessor's assistant, becoming Town Clerk on the latter's death in 1901. On his retirement, The Herald on 30 Jul 1938 reported that: "H.H. HARRISON, Town Clerk of Kew, was entertained last night by members of the Metropolitan Institute of Town Clerks and presented with a walking stick and case of pipes, on the occasion of his retirement after 50 years' service with Kew City Council. He began his municipal career as a youth with the Bendigo City Council, and in 1888, was appointed Assistant Town Clerk at Kew. Appointed Town Clerk in 1901, he has held the office for 37 years."This portrait is one of a series of mounted and framed photographic portraits of Mayors and Town Clerks of the former Borough, Town and City of Kew, for the period 1863 to 1969. Dunlop first entered into the tennis sports equipment market in 1923 with Dunlop Tennis balls. They also produced tennis shoes and by 1932 Dunlop was manufacturing two million pairs a year. The Dunlop Maxply Tennis racquet was first produced in 1932 and dominated the wooden racquet market for the next 50 years. This racquet was made from a mix of nine different woods. The Maxply was favoured by legendary tennis players including Evonne Goolagong Cawley, Lew Hoad and Rod Laver who was using a Dunlop Maxply when he won all four Grand Slam tournaments in a row, something he achieved in 1962 and 1969. Sport activities including tennis have always been an important community pursuit in Wodonga and District. Volcanic activity in this region ceased about 50 million years ago, after which the landscape was shaped by glaciation from about 1.8 million years ago to the end of the Great Ice Age about 10,000 years ago. Willow started business in 1887 as a metal working company based in Melbourne Australia, making tinned biscuit and tea canisters. The outbreak of the First World War saw their manufacturing change to making armaments and essential packaging for the war effort. In the early 1920’s, the Willow brand was established. Making tin plated canisters and baking pans with the well-known Willow pattern, imprinted on them. Some other items in production at this time include billies, boilers, basins and Coolgardie safes. In the late 1950’s, the company ventured into plastics production. Stepping away from its very successful tin plating industry of more than 50 years. In 1965, the company name changed to Willow Ware Pty Ltd, to be more closely linked to its Willow brand. Willow Ware is still  in business today. A food safe known as a “Coolgardie” meat storage made by an emerging Australian company no longer in bushiness. This item gives a snapshot into early Australian manufacturing specifically aimed at the Australian market. Reproduced on p73 of 'Pioneers & Painters' Two horse drawn carriages outside Thomson's hotel in Kinglake. One is carrying passengers. On the left attached to the hotel is the Post Office. Mrs Thomson was the postmistress who in 1927 had held the position for 43 years (since 1884). The licence for the house was obtained in 1908 by Mr. Harry Thomson who by 1927 was the oldest permanent resident in Kinglake, having been there about 50 years. The hotel was destroyed by bushfire in February 1926 and a new hotel constructed on the site in 1927 by owner and licensee, Mr Frank Thomson, Harry’s son. Another identity at the hotel is Mr W. S. Harris, better known as "Shelley” who was the ranger at Kinglake National Park but also served in the Boer War and World War 1 having got away after being rejected ten times, at the age of 55 years.This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.'
