Henry Colville was educated at Eton and then entered the Grenadier Guards in 1870. He was appointed Aide-de-Camp to General the Honorable Sir Leicester Smyth, commanding the forces in South Africa in 1880. Colville had expeditions and was mentioned in despatches on numerous occasions. In 1893 he succeeded Sir Gerald Portal as Commissioner for Uganda, received the Central Africa Medal, made Knight Commander of the Order of St Micael and St George and received the second class Order of the Brilliant Star of Zanzibar. The 13th Light Horse was raised at Broadmeadows Victoria in March 1915 from volunteers from across Victoria. The regiment served at Gallipoli, Egypt and on the Western Front. The guidon, emblazoned with the battle honours, was presented in 1927. In 1948 when 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as the descendent regiment of the 8th, 13th and 20th Light Horse Regiments it became the custodian of the three guidons including that of the 13th Light Horse. In 1991, the two Victorian mounted regiments 8/13th VMR and 4/19th Prince of Wales's Light Horse were linked to form a single regiment which had custodianship of six guidons, 4th, 8th 13th, 17th 19th and 20th Light Horse Regiments. All except the 4th Light Horse Guidon were laid up at the Shrine in August 2005. These bottles may have been in use in the 1940's or earlier. Cordial drinks came in bottles bought at a local grocery store. The shape of the bottles changed as did the stopper or seal. Bottles were recycled remaining the property of the manufacturer - 1. O.T. Ltd., Australia and 2. Lemos Australia in these samples. It appears these bottles may have the remains of a soft drink or cordial which is now dark in colour. Two vintage glass bottles: 1. Ron Peck machined the driving sprockets for Bren Gun Carriers which were sent to North Africa. The Rats of Tobruk, the Egypt and Rommell campaign used these munitions. He boarded at Orbost House while doing 12 hour day shifts.During WW11 munitions and defence equipment were manufactured by state government and private engineering firms, co-ordinated by the Commonwealth government. They worked together to meet Australia’s defence needs and create ‘mass production, on a nation-wide scale, of materials and articles of a higher degree of complexity and accuracy than had before been attempted in Australia. General Sir Redvers Henry Buller served in South Africa during the 9th Cape Frontier War in 1878 and the Anglo-Zulu War in 1879. In the Zulu War he commanded the mounted infantry under Sir Evelyn Wood. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery under fire at the Battle of Hlobane. He served in the First Boer War and was Commander-in-Chief of British Forces in South Africa during the Second Boer War. Other awards he received were Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath and Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George. No. 127 is a 2'-gauge ex-South African Railways 'NGG16' class Beyer-Garratt locomotive. It was built by Beyer Peacock & Co of Manchester (builder's No.7428 of 1951) to their "Beyer Garratt" patented design of articulated steam locomotive. The South African Railways Class NG G16 2-6-2+2-6-2 of 1937 is a narrow gauge steam locomotive. Between 1937 and 1968, the South African Railways placed 34 Class NG G16 Garratt articulated steam locomotives with a 2-6-2+2-6-2 Double Prairie type wheel arrangement in service on the Avontuur Railway and on the Natal narrow gauge lines - The third order was for a further seven locomotives in 1951, numbered in the range from NG125 to NG131, once again from Beyer, Peacock. These and the subsequent locomotives had welded water and coal bunkers and flat-topped water tanks with rounded top side edges. The Beyer, Peacock locomotives ordered by the SAR, numbers NG109 to NG116 and NG125 to NG131, were shared more or less equally between the Natal and Avontuur lines No. 127 was purchased from the South African Railways by the Emerald Tourist Railway Board for the Puffing Billy Railway in late 2011 / early 2012, together with a container load of spare parts stripped from a derelict NGG16, and prepared for transport to Australia. He served in the Seige of Tobruk and El Alamein where he was the Commanding Officer of his Battalion during its early days. He was WIA twice , at Tobruk then Alamein losing his left leg. At discharge from the Army on 7.1.47 he was a Major in 2/24th Aust Infantry Battalion. The Hutton Trophy or Shield was awarded annually to the best Light Horse Troop in Australia. The trophy is now held at the Armoured Centre Puckapunyal. Inter-regimental competition was strong in the years between WWI and WWII. Annually, the best troop in the regiments of the 3rd (Vic), 4th (SA), 5th (WA) and 6th (Tas) Military Districts competed for the Hutton Trophy and the Lord Forster Cup. The 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) was raised in 1920 as part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Division, Citizen Military Forces, with Headquarters at Seymour and depots along the Goulburn Valley from Mansfield to Tocumwal in southern NSW. In December 1941, 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 20th Motor Regiment. In 1943 redesignated 20th Pioneer Battalion and deployed to Merauke, Dutch New Guinea. The regiment was disbanded at the end of the war, 1945. 20th Light Horse was the only light horse unit to serve overseas in WWII.No 1 Troop C Squadron 20th Light Horse Regiment drawn from the farming community of Tocumwal, personified the strength of citizen soldiering in rural Victorian and Southern NSW in the period following World War One and especially in the years immediately prior to the second World War. Building on the strength and enthusiasm of the Tocumwal Troop other Troops were raised at Finley, Berigan and Jerilderie.
