Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. She also held a range of roles and committee positions in a wide range of Wodonga community organisations. These included the Horticultural Society, the Wodonga Arts Council, the Wodonga Camera Club and the Wodonga Lapidary Club.This photo collection is significant as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the 20th century.Businesses located at 110 to 112 High Street, Wodonga. Charles Leslie Mitton (1905-1968) was a pharmacist at 131 Union Road, Surrey Hills from 1933-1968. DOD 30/04/1968. Prior to coming to Surrey Hills, he was a pharmacist in Newmarket (Ref: 1931 electoral roll). He and his wife, Ethel Sylvia Elizabeth Mitton (nee Stevenson) lived at 65 Union Road. They were married in 1933 and had 2 sons and a daughter. He was followed in the business by his son John and daughter Rosalind. The traditional scale consists of two plates or bowls suspended at equal distances from a fulcrum. One plate holds an object of unknown mass (or weight), while known masses are added to the other plate until static equilibrium is achieved and the plates level off, which happens when the masses on the two plates are equal. In August 1917 Leslie Dunse, a police constable stationed at Brunswick police station, was accused of breaking into shops, particularly a boot store, grocers, butcher's shop and a drapers, and stealing goods. Three other constables were also charged - Arnold Wilson, Sidney Duckmanton and Hermann Johansen. Used in WW1 by German soldiers, primarily pioneer troops and NCOs. Often had their teeth removed due to negative conotations associated with allied propaganda. A small number of pioneers and certain non-commissioned officers of the German Army were issued a bayonet with a sawback edge, known as the S or m.S. ("mit Säge", with saw). For many years Legacy had a "Back to Caulfield Race Day" for Legatees, widows and their families. In 1995 a Legacy 'Lone Pine' was planted. In these photos in 1998 President Tom Butcher laid a wreath at the Lone pine tree. There was a speech by the Legacy President and a wreath laying at the Lone Pine that had been planted in 1995. Legacy retains a tie with Caulfield racecourse as it was once an army camp and staging post of young men going overseas to war and now it is the site of a 'lone pine'. The town of Tawonga is in the Kiewa Valley surrounded by farmland. It is adjacent to Mt Beauty (built from 1946), an SECV town built for the workers on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme which was being constructed from 1911-to 1961. Tawonga consisted of essential amenities including a store, school, butter factory, sporting facilities, post office, hall and hotel. Activities involved sport, social get togethers eg. dances, fundraising, CWA etc.The posters are a collection of historical photos, documentation and information regarding the history of the town of Tawonga, which is the centre of a farming community in the Kiewa Valley.Posters framed with thin black plastic strip, covered by glass. Empire Day celebrations were held from 1908-1912. Prior to the opening of the railway in 1893 the only public transport to Surrey Hills was the Melbourne-Lilydale horse coach which travelled to Surrey Hills down Victoria Street and Mont Albert Road. The fare to Union Road was 9 pence. Photo 16-4a was the number given to the original print provided by the State Savings Bank. Ken Hall made a negative from it, and the reprint of this was given the number 1459. This number was chosen as the catalogue number to avoid confusion with SHP4a. Photo provided by Surrey Hills branch of State Savings Bank of Victoria in 1978 for launch of Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre and was one of the first photos in the collection. This is a photograph of Councillor Alex Rodwell who represented Central Riding in the Orbost Shire Council. from 1905 - 1926 and from 1932 - 1937. He was president 1909-1910 and 1920-1921. A. E. Rodwell was a wholesale and retail butcher in Nicholson Street (the main street), Orbost in the early 20th century.He was involved as president of the Orbost Agricultural society.This item is associated with the Orbost Shire Council. Jack Bruton selected land at Murrungowar and held the licence for the Murrungowar Hotel. He later became a butcher in Orbost. Lloyds Family Butcher were located on the corner Elgar Road & Whitehorse Road, Box Hill. In this photo the cart is decorated for 1934 the Victorian Centenary Celebrations in Box Hill. In addition to their shop at this corner (which was within Surrey Hills postal district) they had a shop at the intersection of Union Road and Windsor Crescent. Francis John Newberry founded the Victoria Foundry and Enameling Works in 1890 with a workmate from the Humbles iron foundry in Lupton Street Geelong where he worked. Newberry & Walker Foundry & Enameling Works was built adjoining a cottage that was to be the home of the Newberry family during the ensuing years. Although Walker soon relocated to New Zealand, the Newberry and Walker foundry had become a local success. The foundry produced numerous cast iron products such as washing copper frames, and friezes, balustrades and verandah columns. Verandah posts are to be found in declining numbers, but the Newberry and Walker mark can sometimes be seen on the few which remain. A certain number of iron culvert posts were also made; some of them were still in place on the road to Cressy as late as 1961. Perhaps half the iron friezes on Geelong West verandahs came from the local firm’s foundry.
