Image of the intersection of Sturt and Lydiard Streets looking north along Lydiard St. North giving high view of the Post Office building with its tower. Has an ESCo tram southbound in Lydiard St North, a motor car and a number of horse-drawn vehicles. Shows the verandahs along Lydiard St, centre poles, and looks towards a rather desolate Black Hill following extensive mining works. The Post Office time ball is in the down position. Possibly c1910. Summerscales building - photographer, postcards is next door to the Post Office in Sturt St. Has written on the rear, over the full width of the card a message to Ted from Ena? Rose Series - P1713, titled "The Town Hall and Sturt St, Ballarat Vic" with an ESCo tram with a "Vote No" on the front dash panel, two taxis mid-block, and the Town Hall in the background. Drivers standing along both taxis. On the rear in pencil in a note to Ken Magor of Newcastle, Wal Jack has written: "Ballarat old type No. 6. Note route colors square coloured sheet right hand side above driver's head & lower destination sign. Also note side adverts boards on car roof. postcard - titled "The Corner of Lydiard and Sturt Streets Ballarat Vic", photo looks southwest from the Post Office steps towards the southwest corner - has Craigs Hotel, National Mutual Life, town hall shops including Anderson Printer and the Town Hall in the picture along with Robbie Burns statue. The Rose Series Postcard No. P 1783. An ESCo tram is parked at the tram stop - No. 5? Several horse-drawn and motor vehicles are in the photograph. Wal Jack has dated the photo about 1930 on the rear of the postcard and about 1929 in his album notes - see item 5126 for the digital image. Demonstrates aspects of Ballarat tramway operation with horse tram trailers, - copy of a postcard photograph.B&W print of an ESCo tram just past the intersection of travelling east along the north side of Sturt. Steet towing a heavily laden horse tram as a trailer. Photo appears to be taken soon after opening of the electric trams, as the tram does not have any destination box above the driver. Possibly summer 1905/1906. Numerous people in the street, some horse drawn vehicles in the photograph. Letter date etc not known as it appears the top half of the first page has been cut off, includes the response to the first question. From question 2, noting the Coronation week, the letter is post mid 1953. Tram fitted with a Suttons Pianos and Players roof ad board. Has an "Enter Front End" sign on the rear of the tram. Shows many people, mainly women in 1920's style clothing, watching the procession or parade, standing on either side of the northern half of the street, while a horse drawn car with a person dressed in a long beard proceeds along the street. On the tram track is ESCo tram with a large destination box parked. The tram has a Bushell's Tea on the front panel. Note that a weighing machine appears to be on the north side of the shelter. The photograph features three trams, that appear to be the same tram, No. 5. Yields information about the appearance through a drawing of Sturt St in the mid 1920's and yields information about the manufacture of china dishes with images in the bowl of the dish.White china dish, fluted sides, with a gold rim, flat base with a transferred image of Sturt St from Grenville St early 1920's with an ESCo tram arriving at the Grenville St terminus and two other trams in the view. Looks west along Sturt St. One of a series of dishes made for R. Yields historical notes about the method of track construction in Bendigo, the poor condition of the rails at the time of the report and the need to do work at Charing Cross.Typed foolscap sheet note or report titled "Bendigo Tramways - Tracks". Gives notes on the track construction methods of ESCo and reconstruction by the SEC. In the section titled 'Present Condition of Tracks". Note says need to obtain photographs and comments as for Ballarat. Also mentions that the CRB is anxious to re-deck the bridge running under Charing Cross - written date? Probably written for a report into the tramways by the SEC as part of a recommendation to close them.
