This medical / hospital instrument was used in the Tawonga District General Hospital which was built in the 1950s specifically for the increase in population due to the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. Historical: Shows the development of scientific hospital equipment. Provenance: Used in the Tawonga District General Hospital which was remote and therefore required good equipment. Good condition and good interpretation capacity.In sterilised bag. Steel medical instrument used as scissors for holding needles. The handle section is very long with teeth at the end enabling that end to join. In between the two handles is a piece of steel running lengthwise and attached at the end to each handle (goes across). The scissor end is short and blunt. Good condition and good interpretation capacity.Brown cardboard box containing 3 clear glass instruments. Two have a sphere in the middle with a long thin hollow cylinder at one end and a similar one at the other end except this one continues into the sphere and ends in a hook. The other instrument consists of a hollow cylinder that curves at the bottom and goes into a hollow ball. The ball has one small hollow appendage coming out at an angle and another short wide round hollow cylinder at its top. Benzedrine was used medically to enlarge nasal and bronchial passages until it was discontinued and replaced with compounds with weaker psychoactive properties (e.g., ephedrine, levomethamphetamine, and propylhexedrine). Minister for External Affairs Lord Richard Casey visited International House in January, 1957, its first year operating as a residential college. Lord Casey was Minister for External Affairs in the Liberal-Country government from 1951 to 1960, becoming involved in patronage of International House with his wife, Lady Maie Casey. Thean Pak Ken, pictured here, was one of six Malaysian students to attend International House in its first year. Used to rain ambulance staff in the detection and management of patient heart rhythms. Simulator was hooked up to operational monitor defribulator and operated so that the monitor defribulator simulated patient rhythms of different types. This particular unit was used at Frankston South and by the Metropolitan Ambulance Service Regional Training Unit. Used in Mobile Intensive Care Ambulances (MICA) 1, 2 and 3 during the 1970s and 1980s. These units were effective and reliable. Paramedics were happy, however, when they were replaced by the Lifepak 5 as the new unit was much lighter and smaller. Source Ian Donaldson AHSV assistant curator.
