Photograph, David Christmas Memorial Plaque, Heritage Excursion, 22 October 1996, 22/10/1996
The David Christmas memorial is situated on the south side of One Tree Hill Road, at Watsons Creek. As a young man, Welshman David Christmas had been transported to Van Dienman's Land for a relatively minor offence. In 1836, having received a pardon, he came to Port Phillip, where, in 1842, he was hired as a shepherd by district pioneer, Joseph Stevenson. In 1992, a roadside plaque commemorating the shepherd who gave his name to the district was set in place over his presumed bush gravesite. The plaque was unveiled by two of Stevenson's grandsons, Bruce and Don Ness. FROM: Christmas Hills Past and Present, Yarra Glen & District Historical Society, 2004. The plaque reads: 1842-1992 In memory of David Christmas born Cardiganshire 1797 Transported to Van Dieman's Land for the term of his natural life 1822 Granted a free pardon 1826 "From this humble shepherd these hills have gained their name"Colour photographactivities, heritage excursion, david christmas, watsons creek, christmas hills, plaque -

Portable operating table used by Sir Victor Bonney, Allen & Hanburys, England, c. 1900
This operating table belonged to the famous gynaecological surgeon Dr Victor Bonney and was given to Dr Frank Forster in 1953 by his widow Mrs Annie Bonnie, a distant relative of Forster's. Dr Victor Bonney (1872 - 1953) followed his father into medicine and trained at St Bartholomew's and the Middlesex Hospitals. Writing his obituary in 1953, FW Roques said of Bonney that he "'made three great gifts to surgery. First, he was the pioneer of myomectomy; second, with Berkeley, he extended and perfected Wertheim's operation for carcinoma of the cervix; and third, he devised a fine surgical technique emulated by so many of his pupils. To theatre sisters, labour-ward sisters and young house-surgeons he will always be remembered as the discoverer of 'Bonney's Blue' [antiseptic solution].'" Bonney's utilitarian, portable operating table has a round, worn scrubbed patch showing traces of his famous blue solution. This portable operating table was owned and used by pioneering gynaecological surgeon Sir Victor Bonney in London, U.K. c 1900. Dr Bonney employed two theatre sisters and had two sets of instruments and portable operating tables. This made it possible for Dr Bonney to 'complete three or more operations a day by rotating staff and equipment with a chauffeur driven Lanchester or Rolls Royce', delivering them from one house to the next. The donor of the operating table, the late Dr Frank Forster, was a distant relative of Sir Victor Bonney's widow, Annie Appleyard, formerly of Tasmania. When he visited her in the UK after Bonney's death, she offered the operating table to Dr Forster for the RANZCOG Museum. It was still in a canvas bag in the boot of one of Bonney's cars. Sir Victor Bonney was the pioneer of myomectomy, the surgical procedure for removing uterine fibroids. In collaboration with Berkeley, he extended and perfected Wertheim's operation for carcinoma of the cervix. Bonney was an influential teacher, developing and promoting conservatism of surgical technique (minimal intervention) that has had a lasting influence in modern surgical practice. To theatre-sisters, labour-ward sisters and young house-surgeons he will always be remembered as the discoverer of Bonney's Blue an antiseptic that was characteristically blue.Portable, laminated operating table. Plywood rectangular table with two laminated plywood extensions, a head board, and a foot board. At the foot board are insets of canvas straps to support a patient's ankles. Two detachable stirrup poles, each with a canvas strap attached, fit into two holes at the lower end of the table. The table is supported by two timber trellis cross braces with metal bars, and supported at the centre by a metal rod that allows the table to pivot up and down. Two metal arcs with a locking mechanism fix the table at the desired elevation, allowing a Trendelenburg tilt ( a 45 degree tilt, with the patient's head downwards.) The operating table is demountable for transportation and re-assembly.obstetric delivery -

Mask, Murray
Seems to be a non- collapsible mask. Otherwise is a similar, thinner variety of Murray's mask, which was used for the administration of choloroform. John Murray was born in England, 1843 and described his wire mask in 1868 as a young chloroformist at Middlesex Hospital. It was wedge-shaped and made of thick wire and designed to be folded. The removable cover was originally made of several layers of flannel. Murray’s mask became very popular, especially in Australia, and was generally used with a single layer of flannel without an aperture or opening, as is this example. John Murray was an enthusiastic and innovative physician who also had an interest in nitrous oxide anaesthesia and conducted a series of experiments with J. Burdon Sanderson on dental patients comparing nitrous oxide to pure nitrogen. His career was short-lived and he died just before his 30th birthday. (Ball, C 1995, 'Cover Note: Murray's Chloroform Mask', Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, Vol. 23, No. 2, pg. 135)Triangular shaped wire mask covered by flannel. The flannel is sewn over frame and stitched around the base and along the vertical wire. The style and shape is similar to Murray's mask, which was used for the administration of chloroform, however this variation is not collapsible like Murray's mask.dr [e.s] holloway, mask, dr j. murray, chloroform -

Photograph - Framed Photograph, circa 1920s
This photograph shows a young Wilfred Busse wearing work clothes in the Australian bush. These clothes were all chosen for their practicality in the Australian bush, and create together a distinctive style that is easily recognisable. While it initially appears that he wears long boots, he actually wears shorter shoes with an additional leg protection called gaiters. These protected the legs and were particularly useful to Australian settlers to protect from snake bites. His trousers, or breeches, are of a similar style to the ones issued as Australian Army regulation during the First World War, which were baggy around the thighs and became tighter below the knee. His long shirt protects him from the harsh Australian sun, and he wears an iconic Akubra hat for sun protection on his face. It is assumed that this photograph shows Busse when he was working on a Station in Victoria in his twenties, which is supported by the style of his clothing and his age. This photograph is significant as it shows Wilfred Busse as he appeared in his younger years, presumably on a Station in Victoria. Bioclip sheep net
Bioclip was developed in the late 1990s as a way of removing the wool from sheep without the need for shearing. Sheep, although mostly lambs up to 50kg, were dressed in the nets and injected with a protein which caused the wool to break at the skin. The net was used to hold the loose wool in place and left on for several days to allow the wool to continue to grow on the sheep (and offer protection against the elements once the net and wool were removed). The net was cut and destroyed during the removal process. Bioclip stopped being produced c2013. Factors for this included the cost of a shearing team was cheaper than the equipment needed for Bioclip, and it wasn't as popular with wool growers as anticipated. Those who used Bioclip would swear by it with many saying they would never go back to using a shearer, as Bioclip produced a clean and even result, with no damage or stress done to the sheep. Bioclip could only be used on young and small sheep, with a maximum size of 50kg.Cream coloured netting, stitched in a flattened cylinder shape with a hole at each end (for sheep head and tail) and four holes on underside (for sheep legs). Victorian Ensign, c.1870
An ensign is a national flag used within a naval or military context. A naval ensign is usually required to be flown when entering and leaving harbour, when sailing through foreign waters, and when a ship is signalled to do so by a warship. They are also flown during battles and when the ensign is lowered, the ship is said to have surrendered. This Victorian Naval Ensign was used by the Victorian Naval Contingent in the Boxer Rebellion in China in 1900. The contingent was led by Captain Frederick Tickell who had commanded the Victorian Naval Forces since 1897. In around 1901, Captain Tickell presented the ensign to Frederick Thomas Sargood [1834-1903] who had been Minister of Defence and Education for the Colony of Victoria and was a Senator in Federal Parliament. In September 1986 the ensign was stolen from Parliament House. The suspect was described as a young man wearing 'a beret and bow tie' ("The Age" 26 September 1986). Fortunately the ensign was recovered a week later. Victorian Ensign wool flag with Union Jack, Southern Cross and crown emblem. Hand written ink inscription on white linen sleeve. Rope attached. Photo of a Legacy widow with three children in a kitchen. Two children are holding Legacy Appeal tins. It was taken for an article to promote a Legacy appeal in the Herald newspaper. The article explains that Legacy helped Amy Lloyd after her husband passed away a couple of years before. Mr Lloyd had served in the Middle East in World War 2 and had helped raise his grandchildren. The grandchildren, Amy 3, Justin 9, and Brenton 5, were greatly impacted by his loss. Legacy helped Mrs Lloyd with financial matters and in being granted a war widows pension. The article mentions that in 'the past the organisation primarily cared for the children and young widows of fallen comrades - now it is caring for rapidly increasing numbers of elderly widows.' In 1990 it was caring for more than 23,000 widows and the numbers were increasing by 100 a month. The estimate for 2002 was that Legacy would be caring for 45,000 widows.A record of the beneficiaries Legacy was formed to help and an example of the type of aid they can provide recently widowed women.Black and white photo of a Legacy widow and three children in their kitchen and a newspaper article from 7 September 1990.Handwritten '44' in blue pen, Copyright stamp of Herald Sun in pink ink on reverse.widows, legacy appeal, legacy promotion -

Rennie Ellis (1940–2003) was as a pivotal figure in Australian visual culture. He was both a documentary photographer and a prominent presence in advertising, television and photography. Ellis was known for his candid documentary images of contemporary Australian life. His photographs of social events, such as music festivals, fashion parades or nightclubs are iconic, but his practice also encompassed the grittier side of life. In his AFL series, Ellis skilfully portrays the nation’s passion for the game, extending his lens beyond the boundary line to showcase the spirited fans alongside the on-field action. In Ellis’ photograph Malcom Fraser, VFL Grand Final 1979 we see a young supporter shake hands with Liberal Prime Minister, Malcom Fraser. In the grand Australian tradition, politicians and PMs are active in the football sphere. This work was shown in the 2017 Counihan Gallery exhibition Leather Poisoning, along with many other works by Ellis capturing the nations love of the game.
