This cash ball was used by Cramond and Dickson, a large clothing store on the corner of Liebig and Timor Streets, Warrnambool. The Cash Ball system serviced the ground floor, which measured about 30 metres by 25 metres. An overhead pipe connected each service point in the store, with the pipes connected to the upstairs office. The ball would be filled with a note of details of the sale, and the cash payment; a vacuum system would be activated that would transport the ball upstairs to the office where details were recorded and change assembled. Change was placed in the ball, and the vacuum system activated to return the ball to the correct sales point. A frequent customer has reported that she never remembered the system not working efficiently, and the service was probably quicker than having a cash register at each sales location. John Glass Cramond and James Dickson migrated from Scotland to Melbourne where they opened a Cramond and Dickson store in St Kilda. They were inspired by the growth in Warrnambool after a visit and opened a second store there in 1855. The Cramond and Dickson store, grocers – drapery – ironmongery - chemist, was located on the corner of Liebig and Timor Streets, Warrnambool (now the site of a Mexican restaurant). Both Cramond and Dickson were involved in the business and social aspects of Warrnambool’s community. Cramond and Dickson closed in 1974. An advertisement placed by Cramond and Dickson in The Camperdown Chronicle, Saturday 6th April 1895, states them “showing the latest novelties for the coming winter season” … “import directly from English and Continental manufacturers” … “representatives in London … always in touch with the Newest Continental Fashions” ... “having been established for so many years we know the requirements of the Western District”… “allow 5 percent discount on goods paid for at the time of purchase”. This item has historical significance, being the official seal of the Warrnambool Roads Board which existed 1854-1863. The Roads Board cleared tree stumps and built the early streets in Warrnambool, built and maintained all the early roads and bridges in the district.Small round brass seal with wooden handle. Handle has been carved from hardwood using a lathe. Seal has the words 'WARRNAMBOOL' and 'BOARD' arranged around the outer circumference of the seal and 'ROADS' across the diameter. This pusher was made in 1917 for twins named Ron and Oswald Warburton, from the Warrnambool area. From the design it appears that it could have been hand made or come from a wheelwright or coach factory.This item is of considerable significance as it has local provenance and it is a bespoke item which makes it one of the rare items in our collection.This is a pusher made for twins with a seat of padded leather and curved cane back and sides. It has a wooden hinged handle and a wooden foot plate. Oral tradition suggests that this pig came from Papua/New Guinea and was probably in the old Warrnambool Museum which was situated in the Mechanics Institute Building and closed in the 1960s (site of Warrnambool Library today). Illustrations have been found of similar carved pigs originating from the Sepik River area (Tambanum Village) of Papua/New Guinea and of similar items collected early in the 20th century. It is known that the old Museum had a considerable collection of South Sea Islands material but those items appear to have been mainly collected from the Fiji area. If the possible provenance of this item (Papua/New Guinea and old Museum) can be proved then it is a significant item as an example of an indigenous carving which may be more than 60 years old. The pig is very important in Papua/New Guinea as a source of food and a barter/currency item. This Register of Mortgagees comes from the Warrnambool legal firm of Fletcher and Mackay which resulted from the merger of the firms of George Sutherland Mackay and James Fletcher in 1893. G.S. Mackay was a prominent resident of Warrnambool from 1891 to his death in 1926. In the 1920s Mr J. Taylor became a partner in the firm known then as Mackay and Taylor and the firm later known as Mackay Taylor was in operation until the 1990s at 131 Kepler Street. The Register of Mortgagees with dates ranging from 1908 to 1924 comes from the old Mackay Taylor offices in the Kepler Street building.This Register of Mortgagees is of some significance as it contains information on many families living in Warrnambool in the early 20th century, including those of Burleig, Swinton, Uebergang, Turland, Bates, Wood and Paton. The entries have social significance, showing the typical loans taken out at the time and the prevailing interest rates. This is a small quarto sized ledger containing 166 pages of a register of mortgagees. The pages have been printed with ruled red lines. The cover is bound with a black cover and a red spine. There are pages with alphabetical tabs at the start of the book. The entries are in black ink. There is one loose page which is an old envelope used as scrap paper to record names and amounts owing or paid. This tea caddy, an attractive item, was given to Margaret Fletcher (date of presentation unknown). A tea caddy in the 19th century was a valued object as tea was expensive and was bought in small quantities. The two side containers are for green and black tea and the middle one was for blending the tea mixtures. The caddy was lockable so that domestic workers etc could not have easy access to a valuable commodity. The local provenance of this object and the identity of Margaret Fletcher have not yet been established. She may be related to John Fletcher, the Warrnambool cordial maker or James Fletcher, the Warrnambool lawyer. This tea caddy is of great interest as an attractive artefact from the 19th century and as an example of a household item no longer in use. It is also of interest because it was given to Margaret Fletcher, possibly a local Warrnambool person. This is a polished wood container made in a casket style. The wood is believed to be Coramandel. The casket has curved sides and is on a base with four legs. The lid has a brass hinge and a gold lock with the key and the lock mechanism missing. Inside are three compartments, two with hinged lids with leather tops and zinc linings. The middle compartment has a glass container set in a wooden compartment. This medal was awarded to Ernest Henry Swan. He served from December 1941 to July 1942 in the Citizen Military Forces and from July 1942 to September 1944 in the Australian Imperial Forces. His reason for discharge was reserved occupation. He held the rank of corporal in 26th Motor regiment. He was born in Colac 19/11/1919 to Ernest Swan and Daisy Johnson. He died 04/08/2009 and is buried at the Warrnambool cemetery. During his life he farmed a soldiers’ settlers block in the Grasmere area, north of Warrnambool.A common item which commemorates the service of many military personnel which fought in World War 2.This medal is round and silver metal with a crowned image of George VI on the obverse and the reverse side has an image of a lion standing on top of a dragon like creature. This belt was worn by Captain Charles Rogers of the Australian Army (Light Horse Regiment) when he was part of the mounted Guard of Honour during the visit of the Duke of Gloucester in 1934. The visit was part of Victoria’s Centenary celebrations and the Duke officially opened the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. Charles Rogers was a well-known Warrnambool identity in the 1930s, 40s and 50s as a horseman and Army member. He was often seen on horseback leading parades and celebrations in the city. He was a long-serving Warrnambool Agricultural Show official as a judge of equine events. He died in 1961. This belt is of interest as an example of the ceremonial regalia used by Army personnel in the 1930s and as a memento of a notable 20th century Warrnambool person, Charles Rogers.This is a belt made of silver thread material with a thick cloth backing. The belt has a cloth-covered metal clasp. There are two tassels hanging from the clasp area with beige and maroon threads with tops covered in silver mesh. These two boards were clipped on to the creased edge of trousers and the item stored in this way. They were used in lieu of irons in the days before electric irons. These items come from the household of the Angus family in Warrnambool. Dr William Roy Angus (1901-1970) studied medicine in Adelaide and Edinburgh. He practised medicine in South Australia and at Nhill before coming to Warrnambool in 1939. In later years he specialized in ophthalmology. The Angus family lived at ‘Birchwood’, a house now demolished. Dr Angus was very civic-minded and was active in a great number of community groups.These items are retained because of their connection to past years and because of their association with the well-known local Warrnambool doctor, Dr Angus. These are two rectangular pieces of wood with three metal clips on each. Two of the metal clips are badly rusted. Both pieces have printed material etched into the wood. This ledger contains a chemist's handwritten prescriptions from 1905 to 1910, giving the date, the name of the client and the prescription contents and measurements. The chemist is unnamed but the clients have Warrnambool names and a loose envelope in the ledger addressed to 'Mr H.F. Sambell' suggests that the chemist business may be that of Sambell and Son in Fairy Street Warrnambool. John Sambell established this business in Fairy Street about 1890. He died in 1906 but his son Herbert had joined the business and it was known as Sambell and Son for many years and later as Sambell, Son ad Granddaughter.This prescription book is of interest as a record of a chemist's prescriptions in the early 20th century and it has considerable research value.This is a ledger of 496 pages . It has a cream-coloured hard board cover with remnants of leather binding on the spine. It has ruled pages, an alphabetical index at the front and handwritten entries in ink. This certificate was awarded in appreciation of 25 years service to the Nestle Company which operated a dairy factory at Dennington in Warrnambool. The company came to Warrnambool in 1907 and purchased 17 acres at Dennington and a new dairy plant was established by 1911. At its peak it employed 600 people and processed 55000 gallons daily in the milk condensery which is a process whereby much of the water content is drawn from the milk and sugar is added making a product which has a long shelf life and because it is processed at low temperature the milk maintains much of its vitamin content.A certificate which links a local person to a long and well known industry in Warrnambool and the Western district.Cream soft card certificate with red and black text.Mr H Goodall. This program contains a menu and order of events for the evening on Saturday 6th February 1960.. It was held by the United Service Institution of Victoria, Warrnambool Branch which was a group associated with naval, military and Air Force background. When the organisation was established in 1891 their membership was officers of the three disciplines and their main objective was the higher professional education of officers and to maintain forces in a state of efficiency. To this end they attempted to establish reading rooms , museums and lecture rooms. This card has come to the society from W R Angus who was a local doctor in Warrnambool for many years.Significant for its list of local signatures and their link with a state organisation.Cream card with black text with logo in centre front of the page. This trophy is one of several from the 1930s that were awarded as part of the competitions held in Warrnambool by the Inter-Church Indoor Sports Association. One of the sponsors of this competition was Fletcher Jones, the well-known clothing manufacturer who had his head office and main factory in Warrnambool. This trophy was the Bates Cup and it was probably donated by Harold Bates, a property developer who was a Warrnambool City Councillor from 1941 to 1945. This trophy was for the deck quoits competition. The game of quoits consists of competitors throwing four or five rings or hoops on to a raised spike some metres away. The hoops are generally made of plaited rope and the game is said to have been started or popularized by sailors on board ship. In deck quoits the raised spike is usually replaced by concentric circles drawn on the playing surface. This game became very popular on ocean liner cruise ships from the 1920s on. This map of the township of Caramut was produced in 1938 but shows the original land owners of each town allotment and of the surrounding area. The size of all the allotments and the date of the original purchase are also shown. Caramut is a Victorian Western District town on Mustons Creek on the Hamilton Highway 48 kilometres from Warrnambool. This map was used by Rolf Crawley when he was the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. The annotations on the map have probably been made by Rolf Crawley as they refer to the records and letter books of his father, John William Crawley, Junior (Shire of Warrnambool Engineer 1895 to 1935). Both Rolf Crawley and his father, John had private businesses as architects, surveyors and engineers and the map could have been used in connection with both their official Shire duties and their private businesses. The last owner of the map was the surveyor, Michael Hand who took over the business of Rolf Crawley in the late 1960s. This map is of great interest firstly because it has all the historical details of the land first purchased in the town of Caramut and area and secondly because it came from the office of Rolf Crawley, the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. This is a buff-coloured paper map with a cloth backing. The map details are in black and white print. This surgical instrument, known as a nasal septum, was donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by the family of Doctor William Roy Angus, Surgeon and Oculist. It is part of the “W.R. Angus Collection” that includes historical medical equipment, surgical instruments and material once belonging to Dr Edward Ryan and Dr Thomas Francis Ryan, (both of Nhill, Victoria) as well as Dr Angus’ own belongings. The Collection’s history spans the medical practices of the two Doctors Ryan, from 1885-1926 plus that of Dr Angus, up until 1969. Dr Angus and his family moved to Warrnambool in 1939 and purchased 'Birdwood in Koroit Street (now the location of the Police Station and ALDI), the previous home and medical practice of Dr John Henderson. Dr Angus was appointed on a part-time base as the Port Medical Officer in Warrnambool and held this position until the 1940s, when the position was no longer required. He was also a surgeon at the Warrnambool Base Hospital 1939-1942.This surgical instrument is significant for its connection with Dr W.R. Angus of Warrnambool. The W.R. Angus Collection is significant for still being located at the site it is connected with, Doctor Angus being the last Port Medical Officer in Warrnambool. The collection of medical instruments and other equipment is culturally significant, being an historical example of medicine, administration, household equipment and clothing from late 19th to mid-20th century. These four pages from the Australasian newspaper of January 1904 contain three pages of black and white photographs of Warrnambool. These include photographs of golfers, both men and women, the Hopkins River, the Ozone Hotel, Sheldrick’s Brewery and Wilmot in his mia mia. The photographs have been taken by Jordan Studios, Warrnambool. This studio, a prominent one in Warrnambool, was operated by Joseph Jordan and his son Arthur from 1890 to the 1930s.The accompanying text in the ‘Australasian’ appears to come from a booklet published about that time which was produced as an advertising tool for the Ozone Hotel and its proprietor, Thomas Randall. The Ozone Hotel, originallly called the Grand Ozone Coffee Palace, was opened in 1890 as a temperance hotel. Thomas Randall was the proprietor of the Ozone Hotel from 1894 to 1907 and it then had a wine licence. In 1920 the building was known as Hotel Mansions and in 1923 it gained a full liquor licence. The building was destroyed by fire in 1929. These newspaper pages are of importance as some of the photographs have not been found elsewhere and give a good picture of Warrnambool and district at the beginning of the 20th century. The Worland family has played a significant role in the life of the parish for many generations. James (church warden) and Elizabeth Worland had 10 children and at least 3 sons went on to become very involved in the church, holding some form of office. Henri became Town Clerk of Warrnambool, others involved in their own business in Warrnambool. Ernest Thomas Worland the 4th child, born at Portland on Sept 30th 1877, but lived most of his life in Warrnambool. He became a church warden in 1926 and remained so for approx. 40 years and vicar's warden for approx 15 years. Ernest married Margaret White in May 1902 and they had 6 children. Ernest worked in his father's tannery and took over the business on his father's death in 1918. His trade was listed as a 'currier'. He later turned to dairying when the business was destroyed by fire. Ernest and his wife lived on the corner of Henna and Lave Sts for over 40 years. His main interest was in Christ Church. Ernest died on 27th December 1963 aged 86 years and is buried in the Warrnambool Cemetery. His wife Margaret died on 2nd December 1967 aged 92 years. On his death the Vicar of Christ Church, Rev Gordon Brown, said "Mr. Worland had an outstanding record of service with Christ Church, Warrnambool. He was utterly devoted to his church and served with distinction as vestryman, church warden, vicar's warden and synod representative." This map contains the names, acreage details and dates of the original property owners of the Parish of Wangoom (County of Villiers), excluding the township of Warrnambool. It also has details of the Crown Lands adjoining the Merri and Hopkins Rivers. This is a most important map as it has details on the original property owners. It is a most valuable research tool and is one of our most-used maps.This is a map, printed in black and white and mounted on cardboard. Where there was intensive land ownership the details have been reproduced in larger print on the margins of the map. This instrument is an ear syringe that would have belonged either to a doctor or to a medical clinic or hospital. When it was first donated to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society in 1972 it was described as a throat syringe but this does not appear to be correct. This ear syringe, in our collection for 45 years, is a fine example of a medical instrument in use 100 years ago or more. It will be retained for display purposes and also for its aesthetic appeal.This is a brass ear syringe. It has a barrel with a plunger that is ridged at both ends and a handle with three rings for the user to enclose three fingers and a syringe tip tapering to a point. Thomas Murrell was a furrier in business as Burgess & Murrell in Koroit Street, Warrnambool. He and Mary Ann had five children. Their address was 70 Merri Street. Thomas died in 1921 and Mary Ann died in 1920. Marble and mosaic tile tablet, south wall, main nave.
