This tea towel was manufactured in 1978 in Ireland and shipped to Australia. This was in a period when the C.W.A. was the major women's organisation which had the greatest influence amongst rural women (especially in isolated areas). This was a period when broad based communications were mainly by radio,women orientated magazines and the telephone. The relay of television to "remote" rural areas was not yet established. The CWA was therefore a very important organisation that catered exclusively to women's needs. The C.W.A. motto "Honour our God, Loyalty to the throne, Service to the country, Through country women, For country women, By country women." The atmosphere was one of "sisterhood" and covered nearly all the needs of rural based women. This one organisation incorporated knowledge and learning targeting women who physically may be isolated but not mentally. On the tea towel are portrayed all the activities that would be beneficial to rural women.This tea towel with its respective motifs is very significant to the Kiewa Valley as it related especially to women who felt the limitations of social interactions within a rural area. This tea towel represents a era where communications was relatively based on radio, magazines, books and limited telephone access. Within these restrictive interactive communication levels, the isolation of a "back o' Bourke" location applied tremendous mental fatigue on women more than on men.This CWA Victoria Golden Jubilee (1928-1978) tea towel is made from Irish flax at the Blackstaff Flax Spinning and Weaving factory. It is therefore of high quality and very durable. The major colours projecting from a light blue background are red, yellow, green, orange and black. The motives portrayed the activities of the CWA in 1978. These activities are embroidery, crocheting, dress making, knitting, cooking, art, macrame, drama, music, patchwork, toy making and community relief, pennies for friendship, emergency relief and welfare, residential club flats, the thanks giving and Papua New Guinea.The main or central theme of this tea towel is presented in the central area within three rings. A steel helmet, popularly called a tin hat, is used as protective headwear by military personnel and civil workers in times of emergency and disasters. Steel helmets were first used in World War One, with the Allies troops using a design produced in London by John Brodie in 1915. This helmet was constructed in one piece pressed from a single thick sheet of steel and variants of this design have been used by military personnel ever since. It is not clear whether this particular item comes from World War One or World War Two. This steel helmet is retained as a good example of the protective headwear worn by Australian military personnel in World Wars One or Two.The crown of his helmet or tin hat is of an oval shape and it has a short flattened brim. The bag was used by Nurse Emma Warburton (1863-1946), who provided assistance at the birth of a couples child, not only looking after the new mother but also the family and the house hold chores. Nurse Warburton lived in Bourke Street, Mentone. The contents of the bag were, five letters of recommendation, a sewing kit, a breast reliever, seven keys, Red Cross Emergency Service Badge and two notes re medication. Stripping of the foundations commenced in 1948 and the first concrete in the dam was poured in May, 1949. With the suspension for the winter months of work on the High Plains, it was possible to increase the number of men, and work then proceeded at a steady pace for the remainder of the year. Some interruption was caused by a flood in September, which over topped the rockfill coffer dam. By the end of 1950 17,000 yards of material had been excavated from the foundations and 4,000 cubic yard of concrete placed. Work at Clover Dam was completed in 1953, but two bays were left open for flood emergency. The pondage was filled on the 16th August, 1954. This vehicle was used for patient clinic runs between Morabbin and Kingston Hospital. It then was modified into an ambulance mobile communications vehicle. Found to be too small to fulfil this role it was later allocated to the Healesville State Emergency Service. It then returned to Ambulance Victoria where it was stored at Eltham for ten years. The vehicle was repaired mechanically by Bill Redpath in 2016 and repainted. It will be restored internally by AHSV members and former MICA paramedics to represent Car 208, Victoria's and Australia's first Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA). Mrs. Margot Eddy was a member of the Creswick Red Cross Society for over 40 years. Creswick Red Cross was established in 1915 after the outbreak of WWI. Mrs. Eddy received her 40 year bar in 1977; she was President of the Creswick Red Cross for 10 years up to 1975. Sir Frederic W. Hewitt (1857-1916), an accomplished and well respected English anesthesiologist, was an expert in the function and use of the Clover Ether Inhaler. In 1901, Hewitt described his modification of the Clover Inhaler. Often referred to as the Hewitt Wide-Bore Inhaler, Dr. Hewitt introduced changes in order to make it easier to breathe through the device and improve the ventilation of oxygen and carbon dioxide. In 1901, Hewitt was recruited to anesthetize King Edward VII for emergency abdominal surgery. This was just a day or so before the new King was to be coronated. He recovered well, and Hewitt became the first anesthesiologist ever to be knighted. (Source: Wood Library Museum)Tall black round topped box with brass hooks at the sides and brass hinges at rear. There is a round section in the base of the box for holding the round clear glass bottle for ether. There is also a ellipse-shaped metal inhaler on small metal base with a thin metal handle and pipe with bakelite plug attached via a small metal chain. Phillips and Stone continued to manufacture soft drinks at Orbost until the early 1970's when the factory became a distribution centre. It closed as a distribution centre in 1978 and later served as the headquarters of the Orbost State Emergency Service. The site of the Cordial Factory now forms part of a carpark. A deposit on the bottles was added to all sales as they left the factory. The returned bottles were washed and the old label removed. The inside was cleaned by pushing the bottle onto a revolving brush.
