Two copies of seven pages of typed notes for a campaign speech in the Victorian state election 1955. Oliver was standing as a Country Party candidate for a seat in the Legislative Assembly. Ski-Horizon is the official journal of the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs which began publication in 1949. The were 26 original member clubs which included Albury Ski Club, Bogong Ski Club, Myrtleford Ski Club, Tallangatta and District Ski Club and Wangaratta Ski Club. VX 42774 Captain Robert (Bob) Fyffe, a grazier from Tocumwal, NSW, served with the Tocumwal troop of the 20th Light Horse prior to WWII (1939-46). He enlisted at the outbreak of war and served with the 9th Division Cavalry Regiment in North Africa. During the attack on Trig 22 on 17 July 1942 Captain Fyffe commanding a composite squadron manoeuvred his tanks to knock out machine guns and anti-tank guns enabling 2/32 Battalion to capture the objective. Captain Fyffe was awarded the Military Cross for his leadership and courage in the action. In 2005 the H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was de-commissioned in Darwin and the Mayor of Warrnambool, Cr Glenys Phillpot, was present at the ceremonies connected to this event. She obtained this sailor’s hat at that time as a souvenir of the ship. It appears to be brand new. H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was the second ship with this name. The first H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was built in Sydney in 1941 and commissioned for anti-submarine and mine sweeping duties. In 1947 it was struck by a mine in northern Australian waters and sunk with the loss of four lives. The second H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was commissioned in 1981as a patrol boat in northern Australian waters. It had steamed over 500,000 miles before the end of its working life in 2005 and had visited Warrnambool several times. This sailor’s cap is of importance as a memento of the second ship named H.M.A.S. Warrnambool and particularly commemorates the de-commissioning of that ship in 2005 in Darwin. This is a white seaman’s hat with a flat oval-shaped crown made of stiffened white material with two white metal eyelets on each side. The base has a black ribbon with a black bow and lettering in woven gold thread. Inside there is a leather band with a white bow and a navy blue ribbon to act as a chin strap. This is attached on one side only. Inside also is a white label with the maker’s information on it. H.M.A.S. HMAS Quickmatch (G92/D21/D292/F04), named for the quick-match, a fast burning match used for lighting cannon, was a Q class destroyer operated by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Although commissioned into the RAN in 1942, the ship was initially the property of the Royal Navy. Quickmatch served with both the British Eastern Fleet and British Pacific Fleet during World War II. In the 1950s, the destroyer was converted into an anti-submarine frigate. In 1957, Quickmatch operated in support of Malaya during the Malayan Emergency. Collected by Lisa Gervasoni when she visited the ship as part of the City of Ballarat's delegation to the ship on the 9th December 2006. HMAS Ballarat (FFH 155) is an Anzac-class frigate of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The frigate was laid down in 2000 and commissioned into the RAN in mid-2004. Since entering service, Ballarat has been involved in border protection as part of Operation Relex II, was deployed to the Gulf for Operation Catalyst, and was one of the two ships involved in the Operation Northern Trident 2009 round-the-world voyage. Ballarat has undergone the Anti-Ship Missile Defence (ASMD) upgrade, completing in 2015. The Bofors gun (which fired this round) was designed in the 1930s by AB Bofors, a Swedish arms manufacturer. It proved to be one of the most successful light anti-aircraft guns used during World War II. Apart from being used by most of the Allied forces, captured guns were used by the Germans and Japanese. The Bofors had a rate of fire between 80 - 100 rounds per minute when hand-loaded via 4-round clips. Effective maximum range was approx. 3,800m. On land, the guns were mounted singly on numerous types of chassis whilst Naval guns were either single or dual mountings. The Atlantic Star was instituted in May 1945 to honour those who took part in the Battle of the Atlantic and was intended primarily for award to those who served in shipping convoys and their escorts and anti-submarine forces, as well as to those who served on fast merchant ships which sailed alone. Broinowski was commisioned by the Department of Public Instruction in New South Wales to supply them with pictures of Australian birds which he published in 6 volumes from 1887 - 1891. Gracius Broinowski was born in Poland in 1837. To avoid conscription with the Russian army he roamed Europe in poverty,his possessions having been stolen earlier in Germany. Hearing tales of the Australian gold fields, he borderd the 'Windjammer' bound for Victoria as a deckhand. Broinowski swam ashore at Portland, Victoria in 1857 age twenty. For seven years he walked from one rural settlement to another working as a shepherd, stockman and independent farmer. In 1864 Bronoiwski married in Melbourne and found work with Hamel & Ferguson (print sellers and publishers). 'The Birds of Australia' was finalised in 1891 with 303 full page illustrations lithographed in colour with notes on over 700 species. Limited to 1000 copies the edition sold out quickly. Bronowski died in 1913 at Mosmon NSW, aged 76. He was survived by his wife, a daughter and 6 sons.Green hard cover book, black leather spine and corners. A cutting from from a Melbourne Legacy President's report showing a photo of Legatee W R (Bill) Mehan (President of Melbourne Legacy in 1979). It was collected to be a record of a photo of past presidents. Legatee Bill Mehan served in the Royal Australian Navy in World War 2 with most of his service in Corvettes involved with anti-submarine activities and in mine sweeping and convoy escort duty. He was inducted into the Legacy Club of Adelaide in 1953 on the nomination of his father Legatee J S Mehan. He transferred to Melbourne Legacy 1960. The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. The folder included biographical details and obituaries, eulogies and death notices of prominent Legatees. Its military force, the Liberation Army of South Vietnam, fought against the United States and South Vietnamese governments during the Vietnam War, eventually emerging on the winning side. The LASV had both guerrilla and regular army units, as well as a network of cadres who organized peasants in the territory the Việt Cộng controlled. Clauss Cutlery’s long and vivid history started in early 1880’s when John Clauss and his younger brother Henrie established Elyria Shear Works in Elyria, Ohio. At one time the company was the largest manufacturer of scissors and shears in the world and was acquired by Acme United Corporation in 2004. John and Henrie Clauss, of German origin, started Elyria Shear Works from a one-room building in Elyria, Ohio Together with five employees, they began manufacturing scissors, shears, straight razors and serrated kitchen knives In August 1887, the Company moved to Fremont, Ohio to be near an accessible, abundant supply of natural gas which had recently been discovered. 1889, disaster struck as the plant was completely destroyed by fire, In 4 months Clauss built a new plant and was back in full operation and changed the company’s name to Clauss Shear Company. 1919 Clauss Shear merged with Henkel Company, to become Henkel-Clauss Company. Henkel Company was founded in 1906 to manufacture manicure and pedicure files, knives, shears and razors. After World War II, Clauss was unable to compete with European firms producing household scissors and shifted its focus to industrial scissors. In 1967 Clauss was taken over by Alco Standard Corporation who integrated Clauss into its existing structure to manufacture tools for industrial niche markets. Clauss made surgical scissors for eye operations, heavy duty metal cutting shears, poultry shears for gutting chickens and specialty items such as anti-acid, anti-magnetic tweezers for the electronics industry. Clauss had approximately 100 employees and produced about $18 million in annual revenues in the late 1980s, but profits continued to decline. Hugh Mahon (1857-1931) was a resident of Ringwood at the time of his death and was buried in Box Hill cemetery.Full title: Hugh Mahon, Patriot, Pressman, Politician by Jeff Kildea - Volume 2: Politician: the years from 1901 to 1931."This book, the second part of a to-volume biography of Mahon, covers the period from his election to parliament in 1901 until his death in 1931. It provides an insight into his reluctant decision to oppose conscription in 1916 and examines in depth his commitment to Irish self-government and the circumstances of his dramatic expulsion from parliament in 1920. The Ordnance QF 6-pounder (57mm) 7 cwt was a British anti-tank gun used by both British and Commonwealth forces during World War II. Different versions of the gun were used on tanks, armoured cars and naval vessels. One version - the Molins Gun - was even used on an aircraft. Designed to replace the QF 2-pounder (40mm) it was first used by Australian troops during the El Alamein battles in 1942. The guns were also made in Australia by General Motors Holden who produced 615 of them, delivering the first gun in July 1942. The United States Army also adopted it and called it the 57mm Gun M1. Ammunition was primarily armour-piercing but in March 1944 a high-explosive round was introduced. The shell case shown here would have contained a 2.86kg (6lb 5oz) armour-piercing projectile. This miner's right certificate was issued in Orbost to Donald Munro of Orbost. It was valid from 24.10.1904 until 23.10.1905 and cost two shillings and sixpence. Donald Munro, with his brother, Archie carried on a boot-making business in one of the rooms of a three-storeyed barn at Lochiel. The Munros were musically inclined and through them a band was formed in 1889. Donald Munro was involved in many of the town's activities. (More in Mary Gilbert's Personalities and Stories of the Early Orbost District). The Miner's Right was introduced in 1855 in the colony of Victoria, replacing the Miner's Licence. Protests in 1853 at Bendigo with the formation of the Anti-Gold Licence Association and the rebellion of Eureka Stockade in December 1854 at Ballarat led to reform giving the right to mine gold, the right to vote, and the right to own land. This new system proved economical and sustainable, operating substantially unchanged up until 1975. This item is of historical significance as it is associated with positive outcomes for gold miners brought about by the Eureka Stockade rebellion and its subsequent democrat changes.
