Aboriginal soldiers formed a special all volunteer platoon at No 9 Camp Wangaratta in Victoria from late 1940 until February 1941. No 9 Camp was set up at the Wangaratta Showgrounds to allow the formation of the 2/24th Australian Infantry Battalion prior to leaving for Egypt. Major Joseph Albert Wright a WW1 Light Horse veteran was in charge of this platoon the only Aboriginal squad in the Australian Military Forces at that time. Muriel Slater, Australian Army Nursing Service Appointment, 22nd May 1917 - Record of Service 24.4.1917 to 16.8.1919. Muriel Matthew Slater started her nursing training the day of her 21st birthday. When she became a fully trained nurse she joined the army nursing service and sailed for India on the Khiva. She was stationed ar Dealali Internment Camp - mostly German and Turkish POW's. After 2 years in India she was sent via Egypt to the UK and spent some months between Harefield Hospital in London and others in the UK. She sailed home on the Karragolia where she met Lt T H. Scholfield MC, MM (21st Bat). They married in 1922 and had a son and 2 daughters. Maker unknown. This blanket was part of the standard army issue kit and belonged to Lois Denshams father, who served at Gallipoli during the first world war. Before donating the blanket to the Running stitch collection, it was kept by Lois' Aunty Nita. Lois remembers that it was kept in her fathers original kit bag and kept at her aunts place because of sad memories about the war which her mother found difficult. The humble army blanket had many uses during war times. Issued with two blankets, it was all a soldier had as a bed to keep warm or without a tent, all they had to provide shelter from the sun, rain or wind. (They were supplemented with a woollen army 'great coat', but soldiers still had to huddle together as keeping warm and dry was a desperate game.) The Lighthorsemen used them under their standard leather saddles for extra padding and in the hospitals they were sometimes the only bedding for the wounded. This blanket belonged to Lois Denshams' father who served in the Australian Army in the First World War, landing at Gallipoli. Since the war, army blankets have come to be regarded as the basic type of blanket -no frills. These badges were almost certainly issued to Leslie Samuel Woods of Albury who enlisted 10 May 1915 having completed first year medicine at Melbourne University. He served a year at the Convalescent Hospital, Harefield UK, before being ordered home to complete his medical studies. He would have completed his studies near the end on 1918 and attempted to re-enlist but had not entered training before the Armistice. Doctor Leslie Woods was a General Practitioner in Albury till his death. He is buried in Albury Waugh Road Cemetery.Well provenanced object illustrating the WWI experience of a young Albury man.Two lapel badges pinned to a piece of paper with a handwritten notation.
