The purpose of the annual Port Melbourne Holy Trinity Church Queen and King competition was to raise Parish funds. The ceremony held on Saturday 28th November 1931 was to Crown Miss Dulcie SMITH as the Carnival queen. As Queen of the Sunday School, she gained the most votes. On the church tower each day leading to the crowning a coloured flag was flown representing the group which was currently leading in the voting. the flying of the orange flag announced Dulcie's win. The photograph was taken at an Ithacan picnic held at Mentone Racecourse in 1935. Melbourne's first Greek Orthodox Church 'Evangelismos' in Victoria Parade East Melbourne was consecrated in 1901. Ithacans, as members of the Greek Orthodox Community, were directly involved in its establishment. A.J.Lucas the founding president of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society was one of a number of prominent Greeks who advanced funds to help with the purchase of the East Melbourne site upon which the church was built. The photograph was taken outside the Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church East Melbourne following a celebratory eulogy marking the unification of the Heptanese (seven islands) with Greece in 1864. The Heptanese are located in Western Greece in the Ionian Sea. They include Kerkira, Zakinthos, Lefkada, Ithaca, Paxos, Kefallonia, and Kythera. The celebration is organised each year by Melbourne's Heptanesean Federation and commences with a celebratory church eulogy followed by afternoon tea and cultural activities at the host clubrooms. The women are dressed in traditional dress of each island .Ithaca (and the other islands of the Heptanese) were unified with Greece in 1864. From approx 1500 Ithaca was under centuries-long Venetian rule, which largely preserved it from becoming part of the Ottoman Empire, thus creating a distinct cultural identity with Venetian influences. Following a brief period in 1797 of French rule, Ithaca became a British protectorate from 1809 until 1864 followng which the island was reunified with the modern Greek state. Although Ithacans made up the largest number of Greek migrants who settled in Melbourne in the first half of the twentieth century, other Greeks from the neighbouring Ionian Islands also migrated to Australia during those years. Newspaper cutting titled Long Gully school has a proud record. Paper dated Wednesday, February 14, 1990. Article was Community Focus with Maurie McDonald. The school was holding a reunion on Sunday, April 1. Article mentions some history of the school, distances from other schools and the meetings and a petition to get the school. Eventually a tender was accepted from Crawford Brothers, Bath Hotel, Sandhurst, for 2745 pounds, for the erection of the new building with an extra 50 pound for white brick facings. The new school was opened by the Minister of Public Instruction on January 15, 1879. There is a photo of the school in the article. There are also two pink photo copies of the article. Copy of an article from the Bendigo Weekly 30/12/1999 Discover Bendigo by James Lerk titled John Emery and His Associates. John Emery was a tailor who had a business in Raywood. He moved to Bendigo where he set up his business as a tailor, draper and clothing mercer at the corner of Pall Mall and Mitchell Street. The shop was close to the Beehive Exchange, where he invested in the quartz mining companies. He took on a partner, T S Gibson, who was a clothier. Emery was involved in the Bendigo Bowling Club and St Paul's Church. Later he travelled and became a collector of curios. He donated sculptures to the Bendigo Art Gallery and loaned a number of paintings.
