Copy of letter from the Hann Council, January 1909, regarding Almond Williams election to the Shire of Hann, Maytown Council. Hann Shire (1879-1919) was the local government area for the Palmer River goldfield, between 70 km and 150 km west of Cape Tribulation. Access from the coast was via Cooktown, 100 km to the north-east. In 1872 an expedition led by William Hann explored the interior of Cape York Peninsula. Political Flyer for R.H.S. Abbott detailing his promises if elected at the election to be held on Thursday November 26th. 1914. Mr. Abbott was running in the electoral district of Rodney. The three candidates for the division of Rodney were: Hugh McKenzie for the Liberal Party, Andrew White for Labor and Richard Abbott as Independent. the results gave Mr. McKenzie 3575 votes (50.3%), Mr. White 3149 votes (44.3%) and Mr. Abbott 385 votes (5.4%). A biography of John Howard's political career written in his first year holding the office of Prime Minister. Howard was Prime Minister (Liberal Party) from 1996-2007. During his term of office, Howard introduced the Workchoices legislation, Higher Education Workplace Regulation Requirements and the ABCC which were all targeted at diminishing the powers of the union movement. This Elector's Right Certificate, No. 206179, is for Samuel Richardson, a sawyer, who lived at Bullarook in the Ballarat East Division. It has been signed by W. Cantwell, the registrar and by Samuel Richardson. As a resident and a male he was entitled to vote in the Ballarat East Division at Victorian State elections. Samuel Richardson was a sawmiller and farmer in Orbost. He built The Curlip, a wooden paddle-steamer of 9 tons gross and dimensions of 43 feet long, 10 feet wide and a depth of 3 feet, on the slipway at their Tabarra sawmill in 1890. This item is associated with the Richardson family, early Orbost pioneers,A white paper certificate with black print and hand-written details. at the top is the British coat-of-arms. Typed letter to Mr. Davis. Printed in red at the top of the page is a Coat of Arms, Commonwealth of Australia and Postmaster General. The letter is dated 19th February 1910. The writer thanks Mr Davis for the interest he is taking in his election and asks him to forward the names and addresses of the electors in Melbourne who wish to vote by post and he will send them the necessary papers, he also asks to make sure their places of residence in Bendigo is given. At the time Mr. Joseph Davies was residing at 137 Melrose Street, North Melbourne. On the side of the tram is a sign "Save to help control prices" Photo not in Wal Jack Melbourne album. Neg was in a Bright Methodist Church offering envelope - stored with negative file - has 1949 in pencil on the envelope. Wal Larsen was a Bright resident. Note on the background to the sign: Norman Abjorensen wrote in The Canberra Times about the election of Menzies in 1949 - see https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/6532529/the-election-which-shaped-australia-for-decades/ (Accessed 9-6-2021): Not known how the sign was sponsored. "The uncertainty was magnified by a range of post-war concerns and expectations that the expansionary 1949 budget brought into sharp focus. The nation was still war-weary, tired of austerity and impatient with rationing and controls; people wanted to spend their accumulated savings on the new household goods starting to appear in stores, and the taxation burden was resented.
