This album contains photographs from a variety of sources in Scotland, England, and Australia. The date range of the photographers ranges from around 1847 to 1900. There are photos of families and individuals and some are obviously linked. This album has historic and social significance in that it appears to be a collection of family photographs which link areas of Scotland with the coming of early settlers to Australia and in some photos obviously to Warrnambool. They provide an overview of fashion and styles pertaining to the 1870’s through to around 1900’s and hence it has interpretive value.Brown leather bound hard cover with raised geometric design on the front. Originally known as Loves River it became Kawarren station on 16 June 1902. It consisted of a loop siding and combined office and passenger shelter. Goods loading was sawn timber (brought in on four tramways operating between 1905 and 1939), firewood, charcoal and limestone. In 1920 the limestone company built a store shed and a covered loading area at the terminus to assist operations. The company also requested the siding to be extended by three metres, which Victorian Railways did in the same year. This gave the loop a capacity of 21 trucks. Around 2,000 tonnes per year of limestone traffic kept the station busy until trade ceased in 1957. A postal motor started in October 1938, Kawarren being a point where the postal motor and trains were permitted to cross.B/W. G42 with a Down goods train at Kawarren on 14 December 1955. This is a destructive instrument. Perforators were used to pierce and empty the skull in a craniotomy (which is a form of embryotomy). A craniotomy is a procedure whereby "a perforation is made in the foetal skull to reduce the volume of the foetal head which prevents delivery." (Source: Medecins Sans Frontieres, 'MSF medical guidelines - Essential obstetric and newborn care - 9.7 Embryotomy'') This instrument was included with other obstetric instruments, mostly destructive instruments, given to RANZCOG from Box Hill Hospital labour ward in February- March 1998. The maternity service at Box Hill Hospital combined with St George's Hospital in Kew to be known as Birralee Maternity Service. This vehicle was used on the construction of dams, etc., and the Jindivick tunnel at Tarago in Gippsland for the state Rivers & Water Supply Commission of Victoria. The small wheel located on the side ran up a suitably located ramp automatically tipping the hopper and emptying the contents. Under the shadow of the tree is a two-horse dray, typical of the time around Box Hill, used by Council for cleaning the streets. The dray had a tipping device so that when full, it could be tipped up like a dump truck to empty the load. The College’s spray was one of the first pieces of surgical memorabilia to come into the possession of the College. It had been used in the Listerian wards of the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, and was presented , along with some other artefacts, by James Hogarth Pringle in 1930. Joseph Lister (1827-1912) is known as a father of modern surgery. His methods of preventing infection were controversial in their time, but are today recognized as a major advance in the practice of surgery. Lister’s life and achievements are too well known to be recounted here. The definitive biography was written by his nephew, Sir Rickman Godlee (PRCSE 1911-13), and published in 1917. Douglas Guthrie gives an glimpse of Lister at work: “...He never wore a white gown and frequently did not even remove his coat, but simply rolled back his sleeves and turned up his coat collar to protect his starched collar from the cloud of carbolic spray in which he operated...” From advances in bacteriology, and discoveries by Robert Koch and others, it became increasingly evident that airborne bacteria were not a significant contributor to sepsis in surgical wounds. They also demonstrated that the body had its own defences against invading organisms, which were seriously compromised by the effects of the carbolic spray. Gradually the use of the spray was curtailed, Lister himself finally abandoning it in 1887. Lister performed the first antiseptic operation, the dressing and splintage of a compound fracture of the lower leg, in 1865. At this time he used carbolic solution by application, and dressings soaked in the solution. The spray was developed later, after many different methods, including carbolic and linseed oil putty, had been tried in order to reduce the harmful side-effects of undiluted carbolic acid. The steam spray was developed in 1869, and announced to the medical world in 1871. Lister’s purpose in adopting the spray was to kill airborne bacteria in the vicinity of the operation before they could reach the patient. It came to be used all over the world for many years. However, it had serious disadvantages, which even Lister acknowledged. The principal problem was the inhalation of carbolic vapour by everyone in the vicinity, including the patient and the operator. In addition, if the patient had been anæsthetized using chloroform, the gas lights decomposed the vapour into chlorine gas, making any procedure an ordeal of endurance.The spray consists of a steam boiler heated by a wick, a nozzle for the steam to escape, and a glass jar for the carbolic solution. Fuel for the wick is carried in a tank at the base. Valves regulate the pressure of the steam, and the nozzle is adjustable. With the approval of the railways, in February1959 a special tourist train was organized by the Australian Railways Historical Society in conjunction with the "Kanyana: Festival Committee of Colac, Victoria, to run from Colac to Beech Forest. Eight NBH carriages, in store at Newport, were transferred to Colac. The train proved to be so popular that additional trains were later run over the next two years until the temporarily disused Puffing Billy needed the NBH carriages returned.Locomotive G42, labelled "A.R.H.S., Special Excursion, Kanyana", with a guard's van, eight NBH excursion carriages and an additonal guard's van attached, stands at Gellibrand Station with a large group of passengers milling outside the train. This scrapbook contains hundreds of auction sale notices for Warrnambool properties (and some more distant) dating from September 1941 to March 1972. In some instances the newspaper article noting the details of the sale and articles recording the result of the sale are included. The names of many of the real estate firms of the period form part of the advertisement. It provides a significant research tool relating to properties in Warrnambool and information to interpret the type of buildings available during this period. The firm of Henry J. Jacobs & Son, Auctioneers & Real Estate Agents was located at 146a Liebig Street with the known dates 1937 to 1964, and at 81 Liebig Street from the 1960s. Henry Jacobs' Frank Jacobs, also worked in the business. This book has been indexed in Houses and Properties Index.This scrapbook is of considerable local significance as it gives a great deal of information on people, properties, prices and sales in the timeframe (19401-1972). It is invaluable to researchers as it contains not only the details of the auctions at the time but also extra information on the owners and buyers and sellers, the names of the properties, the frequency of sales of properties of the time and the names of estate agents operating during the period.
