BHS CollectionA Davis Tyre pump. A black metal cylinder four centimetres diameter and 48 centimetres long is attached to a metal plate four centimetres wide and 14 centimetres long. A one centimetre diameter, 50 centimetre long rubber hose is attached to the bottom of the cylinder has a metal fitting on the other end. The wooden handle on top of the cylinder is 17 centimetres long and three centimetres diameter, it has a one centimetre diameter, 44 centimetre long metal rood attached to the middle of it which goes into the cylinder and presumably has something on the end of it to push air through the rubber hose. The logo near the top of the pump is partly destroyed has on it - 02 (an unreadable word) DAVIS TYRE PUMP. This is a glass cup which has been painted and etched at the Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition of 1896-7. This exhibition lasted three months and was staged at the Liebig/Timor Streets intersection at the Warrnambool Town Hall and Council buildings with some temporary buildings added for the occasion. It was reported that 70,000 people visited the displays, attended the concerts and entered the competitions. John Villiers, a Warrnambool painter and decorator with a glassware and chinaware shop in Liebig Street, had a stall at the Exhibition. He brought from Melbourne a glass etcher who etched glass souvenirs such as this one for patrons of the Exhibition. It was the first time that glass etching had been done in Warrnambool. Alice McConnell was born in 1885 in Warrnambool to Robert McConnell and Matilda Russell so she was about 11 or 12 at the time of the Exhibition. She died at the age of 17 in Warrnambool. Her father was possibly the proprietor of the R. and J. McConnell livery stables which later became a transport company in Warrnambool.This glass is most significant because it is one of the few surviving souvenirs of the important Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition of 1896-7. It is also a memento of Alice McConnell, the owner of the glass, who died at the young age of 17. The item comes from the estate of Ken Wooles who was a descendant of the Wooles family prominent in Warrnambool as monumental masons. He was also related to the McConnell family on his mother’s side of the familyThis is a glass cup with a handle. This is a Warrnambool souvenir item made about the 1940s. It features the Warrnambool War Memorial which is a Warrnambool landmark popular with the makers of souvenir items for sale to local residents and tourists to the city. The War Memorial was originally designed as a memorial to the local soldiers who enlisted and died during World War One. It was built in 1924 and first used for an official function in 1925. A World War Two memorial section added was added in the 1950s. These items are of interest as examples of the souvenirs made to sell to tourists sixty years ago. The items were made of good quality bone china. The Warrnambool War Memorial still features today on some items sold as souvenirs of the City.This is a white bone china cup and saucer set - a Warrnambool souvenir piece. It has a black and white image of the Warrnambool War Memorial on the side of the cup and on the base of the saucer. There is gilding on the edges of the cup and its handle and on the saucer. These are two vintage small cups, probably dating from early in the 20th century. They may have originally had saucers to match. Both cups have different inscriptions, and were likely given as a present to indicate friendship or love and other examples of the same type of cup have similar inscriptions such as 'Remember me' and 'Forget-Me-Not'. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo.
