Anzac Day school children's medal, issued in 1918. The medal was distributed to every school child that year to commemorate Anzac Day. The Anzac forces first landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. The medal sold to Victorian school children and the public to commemorate ANZAC Day, 25 April 1918. 250,000 medals were struck. Bronze medals were sold for 1 shilling and oxidised silver medals for 5 shillings. One-third of the proceeds was to be directed to the funding of a permanent institution for returned soldiers. Modern Wonder was a largely factual magazine aimed at boys and young men. It had many articles and pictures on science, engineering and warfare etc. In some of the magazines, the Flash Gordon comic strip is printed in colour on the back cover. Issues were usually around 20 pages in length, with the covers and inside two pages printed in colour. The magazine was printed in Great Britain by Oldhams (Watford) Limited, St. Albans Rd., Watford. The magazine was in "tabloid" format, approximate dimensions 36 cm x 27 cm. This item formed part of a larger collection comporting service in World War 1.Young Workers’ Patriotic Guild commemorative certificate. The certificate was awarded to Dorothy Richardson, a pupil of Kew Primary School. Forty-two buttons, created to support the war effort, surround the certificate. The Young Workers’ Patriotic Guild was formed in Victorian schools in 1916. Each child who raised one pound ‘by personal productive effort’ received a certificate. The money was used for the war effort. The 8th Light Horse Regiment was raised at Broadmeadows Camp in 1914 and served at Gallipoli, Sinai, Palestine, Transjordan and Syria. At Gallipoli the regiment took part in the ill-fated charge at the Nek on 7 August 1915 and suffered horrendous casualties including the Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Alexander White. Following the evacuation the regiment was brought up to full strength under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Maygar VC and went on the participate in all the major actions of the desert campaign culminating in the capitulation of Turkey in October 1918. The regiment was in reserve at Beersheba and came under air attack resulting in the death of Lieutenant Colonel Maygar. According to the Australian War Memorial website, the photographer was David Tennant Gaery Eastman and the photo was taken on 9 March 1945. In the AWM collection there is also a photo of members of the platoon at the unit slaughter yards in Milne Bay, New Guinea (REF: AWM 0703790). He had multiple copies of this photo, which may have been obtained with the aim of distributing them to other platoon members. Leslie George Lobb - born 15 July 1920 in Box Hill; married Elizabeth Annie Stephenson in 1954; died 14 Nov. 1997. Leslie became a service station / garage proprietor at 352 Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert a business he took over from his father. An associated mechanical business operated under the name of Leo Green Motors, at the same address. The family lived next door at 354 Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert. Leslie's father Harry Lobb had operated at an adjoining property (350 Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert) as a fuel and ice merchant, before installing a petrol bowser to service the expanding motor car industry. The house at 354 Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert was removed and relocated by the family in 2000 to Mirboo North, Gippsland, Victoria, where it still stands.The photo is a touchstone to local servicemen who served in World War 2.A B&W / sepia photo with a narrow white border of 25 men in uniform. The lady in the photograph was attending a jumble sale which took place at Sunbury State School in 1916. The fair was held to raise funds for the war effort during World War 1.During World War 1 the residents in Sunbury held many events to raise funds for the war effort. The people were attending a memorial service which took place on the local Sunbury sports ground during World War 1. The local sportsmen's band entertained the crowd at the event, which commemorated the servicemen who had lost their lives during World War 1. The former mill and weir shown in the photograph were sited on the banks of Jacksons Creek downstream from the town of Sunbury. John Eadie, a Scottish immigrant established the water-driven flour mill on the banks of the creek after he arrived in the colony in 1866. The mill continued operating until the outbreak of World War 1 when the metal wheel and iron roofing were taken and used for the war effort. The hill in the back ground with the trees and buildings was the site of the former Sunbury Asylum.
