Eric Eckstein - his story as told to a Tatura Historical Society meeting. A noted speaker Eric and Mrs Eckstein were invited and accepted to be our guest speaker. Co incidentally a member of our Society remembered the name and wandered if it was the same bloke. It was. Eric having taken the opportunity of the learned men among the Dunera people, furthered his education and qualified as a secondary teacher. Numurkah was one high school to which he was posted. Dr Carl von Brandenstein was born in 1909 in Hanover, Germany. He studied oriental languages and the history of religion at Berlin University (1928-1934) and Leipzig (1938-1939). His doctoral thesis was a dissertation on the iconography of Hittite gods. He was arrested in Persia in 1941 and sent to Australia where he was interned at Loveday Camp South Australia and in Camp 1 Tatura from January 1945 until his release in August 1946.Four artworks in a dark wood frame with terracotta coloured matte. Else-Lore and her mother Else Oertel were German internees in Camp 3A from 1940-1945. This box was donated containing some smaller items that were donated. History unknown.Wooden cigar box. Leather suitcase owned by Matron "Trix" Moore, when she served in the Australian Army during WW2. Matron "Trix" Moore was the first Matron at 28 Camp Hospital, attached to Internment Camp 1. Rescued by Les Kelly from a council nature strip rubbish collection in Mentone.Leather, stitching around edges. Metal studs on base/rear. Metal clasps, locks & attachment for leather handle. Made in Camp 1, Tatura to contain personal photos, sketches, and records of Dr. Neumann, who, from Germany, had been appointed lecturer at Sydney University c.1937, until interned in 1939. Remained in possession of his daughter Ingrid until she brought it and presented to the Museum.Grey cardboard covers with red binding secured by cream plastic string, containing paper pages with photos, newspaper clippings & handwritten notes. Discovered in 2003 when owner, Ken Gray, of Tatura, noticed the covering paper peeling away on the wall of a galvanised iron shed on his property. He believed the shed was bought at the internment camp 4 auction conducted by the Commonwealth Government in the early 1950's and transported to the property which he now owns.Cartoon like painting depicting men (army garrison soldiers) playing billiards. WW2 internment camp 1, Tatura. Australian Staff Sergeant G F Evans (V14130) with two of the mascots in camp 1 - Whacko the Cockatoo and Cobber the terrier. Whacko was found by a prisoner as a fledgling, reared by one of the guards and renowned for its lurid vocabulary. Ended its days at Wallan Hotel after the War.Black and white photograph. James Sullivan was a Lieutenant in the Australian Army in WW2, and a casualty from the conflict in New Guinea. Medically unfit for active service he was posted to Camp 4 Internment Camp as a member of the Garrison. Document - Memoir, Hermine Wedel, Memories of Tatura, July 2014
An account of the author's family background & early life, more particularly those events leading to their internment in Tatura, Victoria, Australia during World War 2. The author's parents (author Hermine Wedel, nee Strauss) were of German nationality & practicing as missionaries in New Guinea. Upon the outbreak of WW2, those German nationals were ordered to the coast by the Australian authorities and the men were transported to internment camps in Australia. The women remained behind, reporting regularly to the authorities, until they too were brought to camps in Australia at the end of 1941. They were eventually reunited in a family camp for internees, Camp 3 at Tatura, in 1943. They were released from the camp to work in Australia in 1947 and the family returned to New Guinea in 1949, and eventually went back to Germany. Else Oertel was a German internee in Camp 3A from 1940-1945. The penny-brooch is an example of the ingenuity of the internees in making use of anything at hand & repurposing it for much more than originally intended. Else's daughter, Else-Lore Hukins donated the item. Says Else-Lore of the brooch: "Jewellery was made out of available metals. Pennies made a bright brooch and especially interesting if it featured the current year it was given".Brooch fashioned from Australian 1943 penny. Else Oertel was a German internee in Camp 3A from 1940-1945. Woodworking was popular amongst the internees and it is probable that another internee in camp 3 made the buckle for Else. Tin, Chocolate, 1939-1945
Else-Lore and her mother Else Oertel were German internees in Camp 3A from 1940-1945. The German Red Cross sent items to the internees in the camps and this tin of chocolate was one of the items given to the Oertel family. Else-Lore Hukins donated the item, which she describes as a 'treasured item'.Round metal tin with plastic-wrapped cake of chocolate inside. Chocolate has Hildebrand inscribed in centre with picture possibly of two knights on horseback. Tin has cream/tan lid with dark brown base. Else-Lore Oertel was a German internee in Camp 3A as a child, with her mother from 1940-1945. Woodworking was popular amongst the internees and Werner Dehnel, another internee in camp 3, made the darning mushroom for Else-Lore, for darning socks.Wooden darning mushroom. Darker wood at top. Base (stalk) is of lighter wood. Both possibly varnished. Stalk has bevelled lines where it meets top. Base has 1939 Australian penny underside. The USB is a copy of a 16mm format film labelled TATURA LAGER 1942 with the name G RUFF on it. This nine minute film shows three folk dances performed by young girls at the Temple Society during their internment in Camp 3 Tatura, Victoria. Abacus, Between 1939-1945
Camp 3 was one of the Tatura Group of civilian & prisoner of war internment camps during World War 2. Camp 3 was a civilian 'family' camp. The abacus was made by a German internee, for his son in the camp. It was made from scrap materials found in and around the camp & the beads & other wooden parts of the abacus were turned on a lathe also constructed by the internees. Photos of the opening ceremony at the Tatura Museum, in conjunction with 50th Anniversary, of the Temple Society in Australia. Sister Beatrice Moore nursed at Camp 3 during WW2 and was invited by Tatura and District Historical Society to officially open their new buildings and display on POW and Internment Camps, on 22 September 1991. Else Oertel was an internee in Camp 3A from 1940-1945. Else (a German) was interned in a camp where Russian was being taught & so took up lessons. Her husband was away on business in Germany at the outbreak of war and was not interned with them & therefore Else was also motivated to learn Russian because it was possible she would be repatriated to the Russian sector of Germany at the end of the war (namely Chemnitz, Saxony). This book is one she used in these lessons.Foolscap size exercise book. Composed of unlined pages hand-bound together inside a manila folder(?) / other cardboard.
