black and white photograph, Warren, Mrs H, C1900- 1910
This photograph was found in the Orbost Historical Society's cupboard. School is unknown. A copy of this photograph has been donated by Gil and Heather Richardson via the Mary Gilbert Collection. It is probably of students of Jarrahmond school where Miss Cope was the head teacher C 1916. This photograph could be associated with a celebration of Empire Day. The celebration of Queen Victoria's birthday on May 24 was renamed Empire Day in 1903 after her death in 1901. It was celebrated throughout the British Empire culminating in fireworks and bonfires in the evening. Empire Day was first introduced in 1905 to promote loyalty among the dominion countries of the British Empire. (from https://dictionaryofsydney.org/event/empire_day) Celebrated on 24 May, Queen Victoria's birthday, it was directed especially at school children. Teachers were encouraged to promote special steps to develop a feeling of pride in the British Empire and the achievements of the British race. Often a morning of short addresses, recitations and patriotic songs such as 'Rule Britannia' and 'Advance Australia' was followed by a half-day holiday to mark the celebration of Australia's strong ties to the British Empire. Booklet, Beyond the Point, 2007
This book was written in 2007 by Margaret McOrist to mark the 150th anniversary of the arrival in the Warrnambool area of John Logan. It is a sequel to a 1991 book, ‘Clotted Cream and Mangels’ which told the story of John Logan and his wife Mary Gardner. They lived at Hopkins Point, Warrnambool and the book, ‘Beyond the Point’ tells the story of the Logan descendants. When the farm land was sub-divided and sold the nearby beach was named ‘Logans Beach’. This book is of considerable interest as it tells the story of the descendants of important early settlers, John Logan and Mary Gardner. The area where they first settled is now of major interest as Logans Beach (named for the Logan family) is the well-known whale watching area. Southern Right Whales return to this beach each year and the females calve and remain up to three months at this beach, making it an important ‘whale nursery’. This is a soft cover book with black plastic ring binding and clear plastic sheets covering the front and back paper covers. The front cover has a reproduction of an 1891 map of Warrnambool and district with the title of the book and other information superimposed on the map. The back cover is black. The book has 101 pages and contains information on the Logan families who lived at Tooram in Allansford and their descendants. There are many black and white and colour photographs, diagrams, maps and family trees. Front Cover: ‘Beyond the Point, 150 years since the arrival of Irish ancestor, John Logan, Hopkins Point, Warrnambool, Victoria, 1857-2007, by Margaret McOrist’. john logan and mary gardner, hopkins point, logans beach, tooram, history of warrnambool -

Price was born in Tasmania, educated in Hobart Town and at Scotch College, Melbourne, before entering the East India Military College, Addiscombe, England. He was commissioned on 7 July 1861 in the Madras Infantry and began twenty years’ service in India with several regiments, retiring in April 1883. On his return to Victoria he was tasked with raising of a force of one thousand, to be known as the Victorian Mounted Rifles, and appointed a lieutenant-colonel in the Permanent Military Forces. Companies of the Victorian Mounted Rifles were raised in rural districts throughout Victoria. The soldiers were paid a small annual allowance and were required to provide their own horse. Many members served in contingent to the Boer War. After Federation the VMR was gathered up into the Australian Light Horse. Hand written letter from Major Parker, Director of Royal Tournament replying to Robert Morrison's letter ( 3103.906 ) . gramophone record, 1949
Galway Bay was a hit around the world for the American singer Bing Crosby in the late 1940s. Crosby was very popular in Australia and had planned to visit Australia in 1949.The phonograph disc record was the primary medium used for music reproduction until late in the 20th century, replacing the phonograph cylinder record—with which it had co-existed from the late 1880s through to the late 1920s. Records were still the most popular media even when new formats such as compact cassette were mass-marketed. By the late 1980s, digital media, in the form of the compact disc, had gained a larger market share, and the vinyl record left the mainstream in 1991. This item is representative of the music popular in the mid 20th century.Double sided black disc with a single central hole. A side is Galway Bay. B side is My Girl's An Irish Girl. Both are vocal with orchestra by Bing Crosby. On the central label is Y6121 and detailed information of the maker, Columbia Gramophone Company (Aust)., in gold print on black background.Pressed - WL4583T20Aphonogram-record vinyl crosy-bing music-irish -
