After attending Eton College, Herbert Chermside attended the Royal Military Academy where he graduated at the top of his year and was commissioned in the Royal Engineers in 1870. After several postings and expeditions, including the Arctic in 1873, he was promoted to captain in 1882 and appointed to the British Army's intelligence staff in Egypt and given command of the Egyptian Army's 1st Battalion. He spent four years in Egypt. Promotions and consular appointments followed and eventually he returned to Britain. He was appointed in command of the Curragh Camp in Ireland, 1900. However, he was sent to South Africa to command the 14th brigade and the 3rd division during the Second Boer War. Late 1901 he returned to his position in Ireland and in 1902 he was appointed the first Post-Federation Governor of Queensland, Australia. He announced his retirement in 1904 and returned to Britain. He retired from the Army in 1907. Chermside was awarded the Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1886, Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1880, upgraded to Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1897 and Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1899. This photograph was found in the Orbost Historical Society's cupboard. School is unknown. A copy of this photograph has been donated by Gil and Heather Richardson via the Mary Gilbert Collection. It is probably of students of Jarrahmond school where Miss Cope was the head teacher C 1916. This photograph could be associated with a celebration of Empire Day. The celebration of Queen Victoria's birthday on May 24 was renamed Empire Day in 1903 after her death in 1901. It was celebrated throughout the British Empire culminating in fireworks and bonfires in the evening. Empire Day was first introduced in 1905 to promote loyalty among the dominion countries of the British Empire. The photographer, was a thirty-two year old settler living on a small mixed farm with her husband, William, at Newmerella, near Orbost in Gippsland, Victoria, when she bought her first camera, an Austral Box quarter-plate. Her family says she was entirely self-taught. The Warrnambool Shire commenced in 1863 and was 613 square miles in area and had a population of about 8000. It was divided into three ridings each with three councillors. Its industries were dairying, general farming, cheese and butter making, wool growing, sheep and cattle raising. This book was written in 2007 by Margaret McOrist to mark the 150th anniversary of the arrival in the Warrnambool area of John Logan. It is a sequel to a 1991 book, ‘Clotted Cream and Mangels’ which told the story of John Logan and his wife Mary Gardner. They lived at Hopkins Point, Warrnambool and the book, ‘Beyond the Point’ tells the story of the Logan descendants. When the farm land was sub-divided and sold the nearby beach was named ‘Logans Beach’. This book is of considerable interest as it tells the story of the descendants of important early settlers, John Logan and Mary Gardner. The area where they first settled is now of major interest as Logans Beach (named for the Logan family) is the well-known whale watching area. Southern Right Whales return to this beach each year and the females calve and remain up to three months at this beach, making it an important ‘whale nursery’. This is a soft cover book with black plastic ring binding and clear plastic sheets covering the front and back paper covers. The front cover has a reproduction of an 1891 map of Warrnambool and district with the title of the book and other information superimposed on the map. The back cover is black. The book has 101 pages and contains information on the Logan families who lived at Tooram in Allansford and their descendants. There are many black and white and colour photographs, diagrams, maps and family trees. The Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as the mounted arm of the Victorian Colonial defence force in 1885. It was under the command of Colonel Thomas Caradoc Rose (Tom) Price (1842-1911). Price was born in Tasmania, educated in Hobart Town and at Scotch College, Melbourne, before entering the East India Military College, Addiscombe, England. He was commissioned on 7 July 1861 in the Madras Infantry and began twenty years’ service in India with several regiments, retiring in April 1883. On his return to Victoria he was tasked with raising of a force of one thousand, to be known as the Victorian Mounted Rifles, and appointed a lieutenant-colonel in the Permanent Military Forces. Companies of the Victorian Mounted Rifles were raised in rural districts throughout Victoria. The soldiers were paid a small annual allowance and were required to provide their own horse. Many members served in contingent to the Boer War. After Federation the VMR was gathered up into the Australian Light Horse. Hand written letter from Major Parker, Director of Royal Tournament replying to Robert Morrison's letter ( 3103.906 ) . He points out the difficulty of affiliated regiments 14/20 Hussars and Queens Royal Irish Hussars providing horses because they no longer have horses.

Galway Bay was a hit around the world for the American singer Bing Crosby in the late 1940s.
