It was sung by Jeanette McDonald and Nelson Eddy in the musical "Maytime" "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny" is a song which was written by James A. Bland (1854–1911), an African American who wrote over 700 songs. It is an adaption by Bland of the traditional "Carry Me Back to Ole Virginny" popular since the 1840s and frequently sung by Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War. This is a photograph of Annabella McKenzie who trained at The Royal Melbourne in the 1890's. The Royal Melbourne Hospital was the first hospital in Victoria – established in 1848 to serve the young and thriving community of Melbourne. Prior to the transfer of nursing education to the university sector, nurses were trained in a course of instruction in hospital nursing schools that awarded a certificate in general nursing. These courses were generally for a three-year period, and nurses were paid employees of the parent hospital. Annabella Mckenzie Fisher was born into the Mckenzie family and married into the Fisher family. She married Fisher James Fisher, a Lochend farmer.The Fisher family was a very early Orbost farming family.A hand-coloured photograph in an oval shaped wooden frame. It is of a woman in a nurse's uniform of a dark coloured dress with a white bib apron and black belt. The cuffs of the long sleeved dress are white. She is wearing a white cap. These cloths were embroidered by Mrs J.W. Bird of Orbost for her daughter's trousseau. Hilda Bird, the only daughter of Mr and Mrs J.W. Bird married Mr. John Russell of Caulfield in April 1940. Jane Annie (Jean) Herbert married John Whitney Bird on December 18 1902. she was a long-time member of the St James Church of England choir and a very keen tennis player. she died in 1953. These house plans were drawn up for James Nixon. James Nixon was born in Orbost on 15.11.1912. He married Joyce May Thompson on 2.2.1937. He was a well known Orbost identity, serving a record 47 years as a Commissioner on the Snowy River improvement Trust, as well a director of Snowy River Seed and th Bean Board. He died on 21.12.2002.James Nixon, a third generation Nixon, father of Peter Nixon A.O., was an involved and respected Orbost identity. The shire covered an area of 9,347 square kilometres and existed from 1892 until 1994 when it became part of the East Gippsland Shire Council. Orbost was at first included in the Bairnsdale Shire from 1882 and was later part of the Tambo Shire. Because of travelling distances the Croajingalong Shire was created in 1892 (name changed to Orbost Shire 17.2.1893 with James Cameron as the first Shire President. In 1994 it amalgamated to become part of East Gippsland Shire Council. The Country Roads Board was the government authority for the construction and maintenance of main roads in Victoria between 1913 and 1983. It was succeeded by the Road Construction authority on 1 July 1983 and later merged with the Road Traffic Authority on July 1 1989 to form the Roads Corporation. Snowy River Shipping Company formed in 1880. They were soon shipping produce (mainly vegetables) from the area to Melbourne. The Snowy River Shipping Company was formed by Mr Henry James during the 1880s, with Captain McNeil as master. Captain Hegarty was the shipping agent at Marlo. Towing a line of small barges these paddle steamers plied their trade between the port of Marlo, and the farms along the river banks, churning their way almost twenty miles upstream to a landing beside what is now Frank Richardson’s property. On these trips, the barges carried mail and supplies to the townspeople and farmers, loading their produce, mostly maize, on the return trip to the coast. The coming of the railway in 1915 spelt the end for the little river boats. ( ref. F. W. RODWELL in the “Snowy Review”) Frank Richardson 1877-1950 was a sawmiller at Tabbara and helped build and run paddle steamer "Curlip"as engineer.This item is associated with an early transport business of the local district. The Snowy River once had its own paddle steamers. This item is reminiscent of that time.A light blue and white blank cheque for the Snowy River Shipping Company. This book was prepared for the Buchan School centenary. In the Buchan District itinerant teaching was conducted in buildings with log walls and a bark roof typical of the mid 19th century. Not until 1878 was the first State school built on the same general site as the present school, on the Orbost Rd, ⅓ of a mile from the bridge over the Buchan River. This original school building must have been constructed from high quality timber, because it still serves as the shelter pavilion. On 11th of July 1878 William Scott opened the first school of approximately 40 pupils ranging from Grade 1 - 8. A larger weatherboard school was erected in 1914. A residence was provided for the HT in 1934 and in 1956 a second classroom erected and attached to the 1914 building. Unfortunately, all records of the Committee were lost in a fire when the homestead of Alex Cameron, then serving as Committee Secretary, was burnt to the ground, but it is well known to local citizens that Frank Moon, local prospector, explorer and discoverer of the famous Buchan Limestone Caves, attended school at SS1905 Buchan. In all issues there is writing by children from schools that have since closed down. This item reflects the changes in education in East Gippsland and is a useful comparison tool for literacy teaching.
