This is the medal won by Peter Grundell in 1913 for the fastest time for the Novice 10 Mile Road Race.Peter Grundell was the first notable secretary of the Geelong Cycling Club. The sash was awarded to G. Lunardelli as the winner of the Senior 20 mile Road Championship for GWCC. Lunardelli came out from Trieste, Italy after World War 11 and worked for the Geelong Water Board. Lunardelli subsequently ceased full time cycling in order to make a living.This award indicates the important influence that immigrants had on the popularity and depth of cycling at the time in the Geelong region. Track cycle built by Eugene Cowley in 1949 for Ken Jenkin from the Geelong Amateur Cycling Club.Gene Cowley began building cycles in the 1890s and continued until the middle 1950s. He was the first president of the Geelong Amateur Cycling Club.Velos Track and Road Cycle. It has a steel frame, steel rims, rubber tyres, Brookes saddle, pedals with toe straps, handle bars for track racing and dual brakes. This machine is equipped with an early derailler gear- note change lever on down tube. The frame is painted grey and has a Velos badge on the seat stem and a V in white with a red background on the head stem. The Annual 20 Road race has been the classic championship of the Geelong Cycling Club from 1914 onwards. It was called the Annual 20 because it was originally a 20 mile race. 2009 marked the 97th running of the race. The summer aggregate road races have been conducted from the 1930s at the Geelong Cycling Club. The award is made up from points accumulated for road races during the summer season.This award provides an incentive for cyclists to perform at their best on club race days. It is interesting to note that over time awards have changed with the fashion of the time. Geelong Cycling Veterans Club was formed in 1971 but GWCC still conducted veteran races within the club. These medals appear to be remnants of awards not collected. Medals have always been awarded in recognition of achievement in competitive events. Autobiography of the life history of Sir Hubert Opperman, a politician and world renowned cyclist in the mid 1900s. As a professional cyclist Opperman broke or established 101 state, Australian and world records in an incredible 24 hours of non stop cycling at the old Sydney velodrome. In Europe his wins in the Paris-Brest-Paris road race, the classic 24 hour Bol D'Or and setting a new Lands End John O'Groats record. The shield was initiated by the Camperdown cycling club to record team winners of the races held between the clubs in the Western District of Victoria.
