Elizabeth Jane Edwards was born in Geelong in 1851 to Eliza, nee Murphy and Frederick Edwards. It is said that she was one of the first children registered in Melbourne. She married George Gray in 1864. They lived at Cleir Hills, Queenstown where George was a pioneer fruitgrower in the area. They had six daughters and two sons. She died in 1901 aged 58. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' Anglican services were first held in Carisbrook in 1851. In 1854 church services and a school were conducted in the Parish Hall. In 1864 - 1866 the blue stone church was erected. The interior was renovated in 1966 and the vestry was added in 1972. These medals have been issued to members of the Warrnambool and District Caledonian Society (one to a committee member). This group is dedicated to preserving and promoting Scottish heritage in the local area and sponsors Scottish country dancing and Highland dancing. The group has its origins in the establishment in Warrnambool of the Western Caledonian Society in 1864 and annual Highland Gatherings were held in the district for many decades after this. Lismore Post Office was opened in the year 1864. In the year 1883 a telegraph system was introduced to Lismore, this service carried on until 1888. In 1914 the Lismore Post Office was opened as an Official Post Office and the Morse system was reintroduced. This service functioned until the closure of the system in Victoria on Saturday June 30 1962. The Marong PO opened 1/1/1860 and the area was declared the Marong Road District 19/8/1860. On 12/12/1864 it was redesignated as the Marong Shire and then in 1990 it was proclaimed a rural city. The Sutton Grange PO opened 1/8/1865 and closed in 1970. Accurate charts were imperative for sea farers to sail their vessels safely from one side of the world to another. The British Admiralty published many charts and updated them frequently. Specialists were employed to gather information such as depth soundings to give the navigator as many helps as possible. These factories later became part of the Koroit FactoryThese two memorandums of association document the formation of two early butter and cheese factories in the Koroit and Tower Hill area, listing the first directors. A meeting at the Koroit Town Hall on May 23, 1888, unanimously decided to form the Koroit and Tower Hill Butter Factory coy. Ltd. Mr W J Anderson started the movement to establish a butter factory to suit the convenience of the share farmers of the Tower Hill Park estate in the early 1890's. This is a programme for a ball and a supper conducted by the Warrnambool and District Caledonian Society in 1937. The Western Caledonian Society was formed in Warrnambool in 1864 to promote and preserve Scottish culture in the region and in the 19th century ran many highland gatherings. The Warrnambool and District Caledonian Society still operates today.The programme indicates the Society was also active in the 20th century. The motto of the Society is that of the first Stuart King of Scotland. Reverend Alfred Madsen was a Methodist minister who was born in Maryborough in 1864 and died in 1930. He served in Ballarat and President and Secretary of the Primitive Methodist Conference before Union as well as Secretary of the United Methodist Church in 1916, and President of the Conference in 1917. Following a Royal Commission in 1854, the building of a new Asylum at Kew began in 1864. It was built to replace the Yarra Bend Asylum on the Fairfield side of the Yarra River. Work started in 1864 and was completed in 1872 at a cost of ₤198,334. Operating over a period of 116 years, and often renamed to take account of public sensitivities, the ‘Kew Lunatic Asylum’ was one of the largest asylums built in Australia. ‘Willsmere’ was finally closed in December 1988 and sold by the Government of Victoria in the late 1980s. The photograph is by Charles Nettleton. He arrived in Victoria in 1854. In Melbourne he joined the studio of T. Duryea and Alexander McDonald and specialized in outdoor work. ... Nettleton opened his own studio in 1858. His souvenir albums were the first of the type to be offered to the public. However, when the dry-plate came into general use in 1885 he knew that the new process offered opportunities that were beyond his scope.
