Edward Augustus Atkyns was born in Wiltshire, England in 1840. His family emigrated to Australia in 1852. As a young man he was a keen cricketer and played at the first cricket ground in the district, located between Barkers Road and Hawthorn Grove, on the site of the future Barker railway station. Atkyns was admitted to the Victorian Bar in 1861, initially working in his father’s practice. He sat as a local magistrate in both Kew and Hawthorn and acted as solicitor for several shire councils. Elected to the Hawthorn Borough Council in 1863 at the age of 23, he served in that municipality as mayor in 1866-67. This is one of eight embroidered panels, completed during the 1988 Australian Bi-Centennial, and carried out under the auspices of City of Kew Council and the Kew Historical Society. Nearly 600 residents, including many children, participated in their production by adding a few or more stitches. A book records their names and the panels upon which they worked. The group was most likely en route to the Australian Corroboree, which in 1924 was held at the Adelaide Exhibition Oval. The building in the background is likely to be the railway station, as travelling by train would have been the main method of inter-capital city transport in those days. The ‘Corroboree’ involved a large gathering of Scouts from across Australia. The East Melbourne Cricket Ground was a grass oval sports venue located at the corner of Wellington Parade and Jolimont Parade, in East Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. After the 1921 football season, the ground was closed and then demolished to make way for an extension of the Jolimont Yard railway sidings. In 1921, East Melbourne Cricket Club merged with the Hawthorn Cricket Club, following the loss of the former's ground, to become known as Hawthorn-East Melbourne (or the "Combine"). Thomas H Fagan of Walbundrie NSW served in 105 General Transport Company during WWII. Following service in Syria and Egypt the unit sailed for home but was diverted to Java, Dutch East Indies where they became part of Blackforce. The Japanese following up their success in Singapore overran Jave and Blackforce went into captivity. Fagan spent a short time at Changi then nearly three years on the Burma Railway. The trowel and mallet set was purchased by Mr Swanson, the builder of the Maryborough (Victoria) Railway Station prior to the planned ceremony for the laying of the foundation stone. Duncan Gillies. the Victorian Premier, was to lay the foundation stone, but his government was defeated in the week before the scheduled ceremony. The trowel and mallet set was never used. This set was held by the Maryborough Borough (later City) Council and lay unidentified for almost 120 years until a receipt from the jeweller was discovered. This is a personal account of Arthur Ernest Tonkin's experiences during World War 2. Arthur was a member of the 147 Australian General Transport Company. He enlisted in Alice Springs and spent the war as a driver along the route between Alice Springs and Darwin. There was no railway between Alice Springs and Darwin, and the road was more like a dirt track, but was essential for transportation of troops and supplies. In 1983, three were leased to V/Line to haul services on the standard gauge Melbourne to Albury line, sometimes extending through to Sydney.A class (January 1984) were initially used for "Intercity" passenger services within Victoria. In this service, they operated at speeds up towards 125 km/h. The Wodonga line and train station opened in November 1873 when the section of the line from Wangaratta was completed. The expansion of the railways to the northeast of Victoria occurred after the Victorian Government took over the railways in 1867 and the trains serviced large towns such as Seymour, Wangaratta and Wodonga, as well as smaller towns along the way. The north- east train line to Wodonga remained a significant factor in the development of Wodonga as a rural city in the 20th century. The Past Officers Certificate has local significance as it was presented to Wodonga resident, Lachlan McEachern, who was President of the Wodonga Sub-Branch of the Victorian Branch of the Australian Railways Union, and there are other items that belonged to Mr Eachern in the collection of the Wodonga Historical Society. It also has wider significance as an example of a Past Officers certificate dated to the 1920s, as other examples in the collection of Museums Victoria are later and are dated to the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. Dark brown wooden frame with a lighter brown wood and gold inner border on a Past Officers Certificate from the Victorian Branch of the Australian Railways Union, presented to L. McEachern in 1926, in recognition of services rendered as President of the Wodonga Sub-Branch. The certificate is a colour lithograph with black and white photolithograph images and a red embossed seal. The inscription on the certificate is surrounded by two Corinthian columns and a background illustration of a signal gantry at Flinders St Station. The signatures of the State President and State Secretary are faded.
