Auctions of Crown land were introduced in the Colony of Victoria from 1851 to encourage settlers to occupy and work the land. Many squatters purchased land at auction at the upset (minimum) price of £1 per acre. In some areas where demand was high, such as the goldfields, the price realised at auction was much more. Land was put up for sale in the study area on the Burrumbeep run in May 1855, on the Lexington run in 1857, and on the Gorrinn run in 1858. The Todd family lived in this house in the early 1900s. The house was next door to the butcher's shop which was run by members of the Todd family at the time. Stella Todd is the small child on the right of the photograph, whose hand is being held by her older sister (who is possibly Millie Todd). Marianne Hardridge married James Maggs and had 11 children. They began orcharding on Wonga Road when there was nothing but bush. Over the years it became one of the largest orchards, and they were also one of the largest families in the district. As well as helping on the land Marianne took up nursing and as Nurse Maggs brought over 500 children into the world in the Ringwood area. This is the third edition of "Personalities and Stories of Early Orbost which was collected and compiled by Mary Isabelle Gilbert. Mary Isabelle Gilbert was born in 1905 in Orbost, Australia. She was born to John Gilbert and Annie Cameron Gilbert. She was a teacher historian loved and respected by her family and the wider community This edition was organised by the Orbost & District Tourist Association. Extra photographs in this edition were supplied by the Orbost Historical Society and the Orbost Shire lent money towards the project.This is a significant reference book on the history of the Orbost district.A 141 pp soft-covered bound book with a pale blue cover. A community group project steered by Bambi McLean led to the construction of the Eltham North Adventure Playground which opened off Wattletree Road in 1995. The structure was mainly wooden and included an undercover element with slides and areas to climb. It was destroyed by fire in the early hours of 16 December 2017. These phtoos were taken at approx. 2am on the morning of 16 December 2017 by 2nd Lieutenant Anthony Owen of Eltham Fire Station. This book shows a collection of pictures from the days of the earliest settlement of Box Hill through to the 1930s. They show us the clearing of land for the establishment of farms and orchards. We see the early Whitehorse Road which was known as Corduroy Road because of the logs that formed its surface.This publication, originally suggested by Betty Walters, a former Mayor of the City, portrays the evolution of the central area of the City, from the first settlers to 1930. Undated anecdotes by an anonymous author (by the handwriting it was Legatee Frank Doolan) about Melbourne Legacy changeover dinners at the Federal Hotel on the corner of Collins and King Streets. These were apparently convivial affairs and the writer shares his memories of three occasions. The first occasion was an impromptu and riotous performance by Legatees (organised by Pat Hanna) after the dinner of the First World War ballad 'Roses of Picardy'. The second occasion concerned a group of 'exuberant' Legatees walking down Collins Street after dinner who spotted Harry Lauder [1870-1950], the famous Scottish comedian, in a taxi which was held up at a street crossing'. They prevailed on him to speak at the Legacy luncheon the following Tuesday. Lauder's subsequent speech at the luncheon not only amused the listeners with his humour, but also reduced them to sadness with an account of how his son had been killed in action in France. The third story refers to 'a vacant hansom cab pulled up in Collins St as the diners were departing', which induced one Legatee to fulfil a lifelong ambition by persuading the cabby to let him drive the cab for the princely sum of one pound. Mrs Blanche Shallard and Mrs Jean Spence enjoying an horderves with unknown waitress at the early residents reunion as part of the centenary celebrations for the Shire of Eltham in August 1971. The event was held in the West Riding Hall, Henry Petrie Community Centre, Montmorency. Blanche Shallard (nee Everard) (1905-2002) was an active member of the Montmorency community from 1933 when she and her husband Jack Shallard settled there. She volunteered for many community groups including the Diamond Valley Community Hospital, Greensborough, local schools and churches and the Eltham District Historical Society. Jean Spence and her husband Geoffrey were also residents of Montmorency. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' Notes the introduction of the E class tram. .1 - DL full colour booklet, 24 pages with a questionnaire response form, outlining the Route 96 project to speed up trams providing route segregation for most of the distance. Issued 2013. Provides concept designs, Blyth St terminus, easy access stops, tram lanes. Gives dates for meetings. .2 - fold out full colour map, 8 folds, printed both sides providing details of the planning for the various stops and segregation between Victoria Parade and Blyth St.. The loss of car parking and issues with the Fitzroy St St Kilda stop met a lot of opposition. The Blyth St terminus was rebuilt June 1015. The Flora and Fauna Names Project is an initiative of the Victorian Aboriginal Corporation for Languages and the Victorian Biodiversity Strategy. The researcher has examined material from the archives of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE), the State Library of Victoria, the Victorian Public Records Office and the Australian Archives Office. This first stage of the project focussed on the NRE archives, in particular the field notebooks of the earliest surveyors and their maps although other NRE resources, libraries and public records were accessed. A total of 3028 words were found of which a significant proportion have previously been unknown to linguists. It appears that the place names and word lists in early surveyors notebooks, the 1858 surveyors responses to the Surveyor General and an extensive Wiradjuri wordlist by James Baylis have not yet been widely used or published. Fifteen percent of these 3028 words describe flora and fauna and six percent describe habitat. Of particular interest is the evidence provided by these lists of the existence of fauna in the mid nineteenth century in regions where it is now extinct. For example, magpie geese, eastern quolls, bustards and pademelons were assigned names in the Jardwadjali language area of the upper Glenelg and Wimmera Rivers. Donated by Mrs Ivy Edna Hill, 4/1 Bridge Street, Eltham, 4 June 1966 and includes copy of her note identifying the people. Daguerreotypes were one of the first forms of early photographs. They initially appeared in Europe in 1839 and were produced in large numbers to the early 1850s but were superseded by more modern and flexible forms of technology by 1860. The photo was usually formed on a thin copper plate with light sensitve silver iodide. They have a mirror-like appearance and the image itself was mirrored. They were usually inserted into a case or frame made of wood bound in leather or velvet and cost about one guinea in Australia, the equivalent of a week's wages. With the advent of the gold-rush and growing population came an increase in numbers of photographers both studio and travelling. The daguerreotype process was protected by patents and could only result in a single image from which no copies could be made. With new technology involving wet colloidion glass plate negatives and albumen paper prints of which multiple copies could be produced at significantly reduced cost, the dauguerreotype quickly fell out of favour. An accompanying note with the photo written by Edna Hill of 4/1 Bridge Street Eltham dated 4 June 1966 states: "Dear Mr Watson, I think the enclosed old time photograph will be of interest to you. It would have been taken about 1860. The two ladies are the wives of the original pioneers of the Hill family. The one in the cap was the wife of Henry Hill, the other of Isaac Hill. The children are those of Mrs Isaac Hill, and grandchildren to Henry Hill. The little girl on the left is Amelia, the baby Isaac, the second girl is Mary Jane, and the boy on the right is Bob Hill. They grew up tobe Uncles and Aunts of my late husband. I greatly appreciated a letter received a few months ago per Cr Pelling, from the Shillinglaw Cottage Committee. Book - 92 pages plus card covers, a historical survey of the Sebastopol district. Originally written by E.D. Jenkins for the Borough of Sebastopol's centenary in 1964, reprinted with additional text by Lloyd Jenkins to recognise the 125th anniversary of the Borough covering the years 1965 to 1989. Book covers mining history, churches, the Borough Council, early days of the district and various points, eg cabmen, horse trams and electric trams, schools, the Mechanics Institute, various clubs, fire brigade, hotels, industries, and programme of events to celebrate the centenary. All Saints Estate is a family-owned winery established in 1864 and located on the banks of the Murray River in Wahgunyah, Northeast Victoria. Original owners George Sutherland Smith, and John Banks, arrived from Caithness, Scotland in 1852. After being involved in a range of enterprises, they established the vineyard, including a castle based on the design of The Castle of Mey in Scotland, which was built in 1864. In 1873 in London, Sutherland Smith became the first Australian winemaker to win an award at an overseas wine show. Banks died in 1876 and All Saints remained in the hands of G. Sutherland Smith and his family, until after some variable fortunes in the late 1980s, it fell into the hands of a syndicate in 1989. After being passed in at a receiver’s auction in 1991, All Saints was acquired by Brown Brothers of Milawa in 1992. It is now owned and operated by the children of Peter R. Brown. During the early 1980s, All Saints took bulk orders for different corporations such as Ansett Air Freight, packaging them in jugs as this for special occasions or functions.This jug is representative of an historic and continuing leading Australian Winemaker located in Northeast Victoria.A pottery wine jug of tradition colours featuring a lower half of natural earthenware colour and a brown glazed top section. It has a loop handle and a cork closure. Originally it also had a wax seal closure.
