Originated in the United Kingdom in 1822 with a motto "No man Is At All Times Wise" and a maxim of "Justice, Truth and Philanthropy". A branch of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes was formed at Bogong by Grand Lodge Officers from Melbourne and other members. The ceremony was held at Lewis Camp Mess (Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme) with a world record of 78 new members initiated and a world record of over 100 pounds was raised. Another branch, No. 150 was opened in Mt Beauty. The Bogong and Mt Beauty lodges combined in 1948 and organised a Christmas treat for all children of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria working on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme.Historical: The Bogong R.A.O.B. was formed circa Sept. 1946 and the Mt Beauty R.A.O.B. in 1948. It was a popular organisation in Bogong and then in Mt Beauty during the construction of the K.H.E.S. This club shows how important social clubs were in making up part of the community thus making it socially historic as well. It was a voluntary charitable organisation with a complicated ceremonial tradition and enjoyed by its participants. The donor, Brian William John Bourke was a cook at the pub and other places around the town. He had lived in the area since the 1950s and passed away 2019 and is buried at Tawonga Cemetery.Small brown leather case with attached handle and sliding clips on each side. The corners are reinforced with steel.The hinge appears to be stitched on and is held by an attached leather strap on the right side. Inside: the lid has a material open gathered pocket holding 4 small books and 4 thin booklets / papers. The case holds 2 large leather red and gold cuffs, 1 red with gold decoration apron, 1 red ribboned necklace with a personal badge and 1 of the lodge and 2 short ribbons (one green and 1 blue) with badges attached including the Mt Beauty badge on horns. 1 cardboard roll with B W J Bourke / Mt Beauty on the outside and 4 certificates rolled inside. These are dated 1964, 1970, 1974, 1974 . Federation University Australia showcased its students and research at a luncheon for His Royal Highness The Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex KG GCVO, at the Mt Helen Campus on Sunday, 8 April. The University’s student leaders and academics joined other dignitaries and business representatives for the special event. “The University is deeply honoured to host HRH The Earl of Wessex and share his passion for volunteerism and The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award,” Professor Helen Bartlett, Vice-Chancellor, said. Prior to the luncheon HRH The Earl of Wessex experienced a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony at the University. The program included showing HRH The Earl of Wessex concept plans for a refurbished Sports Science facility at the Mt Helen Campus.  Guests were treated to a performance by the Arts Academy’s renowned vocal ensemble Word of Mouth. At the conclusion of the luncheon, HRH The Earl of Wessex planted a tree at the Student Commons Courtyard. The visit to the University by HRH The Earl of Wessex was the first by a member of the Royal Family since Prince Charles visited in 1974. HRH The Earl of Wessex was in Australia to attend the Commonwealth Games and undertake additional engagements to recognise and promote The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award in Australia. One of these is really two as two suckers of the further tree were twisted together by Fred Jeeves in 1898 and grew as one tree. The other was planted in 1880. The shop is the shop of Mrs Eliza Hand and daughter Florence. The closed in far end of the verandah was the Mount Dandenong North Post Office. The large house is “Mountjoy” owned and run by the Jeeves Family from 1908 till 1943. It was built in 1905 by the Paynters who sold to Ellis Jeeves in 1908.He moved his line of coaches from “Kalorama” his old homestead and housed the horses in a line of stables behind “Mountjoy”. Price’s house, which contained their shop, the first one on the mountain, opened 1906, can be seen faintly behind the pine tree opposite the bend in the road, which was the main road then and now is Ridge Road. The Price’s house just shows in two tiny pieces, one on each side of the pine tree half way up. The house to the right of and high up the pine tree is Walker’s cottage which exists today opposite Jack Kidd’s home at the far edge of Lt 2 Village Settlement and was between Main Road and Barbers Road which runs down the left behind the elms. Walker’s homestead can be seen near left edge of picture 2/3 way up. The roof of the Methodist Church shows among trees left of picture. Mount Bogong located in the Alpine National Park and part of the Victorian Alps of the Great Dividing Range, is the highest mountain in Victoria, Australia, at 1,986 metres (6,516 ft) above sea level. The Big River separates the massif of the mountain from the Bogong High Plains to the south. From the nearby town of Mount Beauty to its summit, Mount Bogong rises more than 1,600 metres (5,200 ft), thus making it one of the highest peaks in Australia not only in terms of its elevation above sea level, but also in terms of actual base-to-summit prominence. Mount Bogong is a popular backcountry skiing mountain through winter but only has snow for the mid winter-spring months. It is around 30 kilometres (19 mi) by road and walking track or 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) direct to Mount Beauty. Falls Creek and Mount Hotham ski resorts are also nearby. Camping is relatively safe below the tree line but the summit ridgeline is very exposed. Emergency shelter is also available at Bivouac Hut on the Staircase Spur, and at Cleve Cole, above Camp Creek on the broad ridge to the south of the summit, and Michells Hut on the Eskdale Spur. Holeproof Hosiery was a Milwaukee, Wisconsin textile firm that was founded in 1901.With extensive advertising the brand name became recognized worldwide. The business produced men's and women's hosiery, underwear, lingerie, and men's pyjamas. Holeproof Hosiery began making nylon hosiery in January 1940, starting production on 8 of its 230 machines. The hose were made of a synthetic yarn composed of derivatives of coal and iron manufactured by Du Pont. In the late 1920s, a successful hosiery manufacturer, Staley & Staley Ltd, started making ladies hosiery under licence from the Holeproof Hosiery Company in Milwaukee, USA. The company went public in 1929 and opened the first Holeproof mill at Brunswick, Victoria in 1930, becoming the first manufacturer to produce and market Australian-made self-supporting socks. During the 1930s, Holeproof revolutionised the Australian market by promoting their products as a sought-after fashion accessory. The Everard Memorial was officially dedicated on 22 April 2004 by Betty Lynch OAM, daughter of William Everard and sister of Blanche Shallard. Newsletter No. 156 May 2004 THE MT. EVERARD CONNECTION Mt Everard in the Kinglake National Park commemorates William Hugh Everard, State Member for Evelyn and father of our member Blanche Shallard who died some eighteen months ago. Doug and Gwen Orford represented the Society at the unveiling of an interpretive sign at Mt Everard. Doug has written this account of the event on 22nd April. We all travelled to Kinglake and met near the Fire Station where we were picked up by two buses provided by Parks Victoria to take us to the top of Mt Everard. There we enjoyed morning tea (needed to as we from·the first bus had to walk the last hill when the bus broke down) while we waited for the official party to arrive. While waiting we had a look at the open four sided interpretive feature donated by Mrs Betty Lynch OAM (sister of Blanche) in memory of their father Bill Everard who was the State Member for the area for many years and in recognition of Kinglake National Park's 75th birthday. The information display describes the Blue Ant Butterfly, the Coconut Ant and the Swamp Pea, all of which are indigenous to the area. The Chief Executive of Parks Victoria welcomed everyone on this warm windy day after which Betty explained how the blue ant butterfly cohabited with the ants and survived. The swamp pea is described as a rare indigenous plant to the area. She also spoke of her father's interest in the area.
