Digital photo print on paper, Sha Sawari, A Moth to a Flame, 2019
Sha Sarwari is a multidisciplinary artist who works in sculpture, installation, photography, and performance. A Moth to a Flame is a commentary on the often-tragic dilemma that refugees encounter when escaping their country of origin to seek asylum. This piece comes from a series of works, also titled A Moth to a Flame, where this metaphor is used to show how the hopefulness of a new life can result in a dangerous, sometimes fatal illusion. In this work, Sawari aims to give a voice to the refugee experience, to reconcile cultural identity, new belonging and resilience in the face of trauma. -

Book, Peter The Littlest Penguin, 2016
This is a book for children written by Ron Sproston and illustrated by Mem Taberner. The fantasy animal story takes its theme from the true story of the saving of the fairy penguins on Middle Island, Warrnambool from the depredations of fox activity on the island. The presence of Maremma dogs residing on the island acting as deterrents to fox activity has been highly successful in preventing the killing of the penguins by foxes. The book has been published by Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, Warrnambool and personnel from this organization oversee the Maremma program. Ron Sproston and Mem Taberner have both been involved with Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village for some years. This book is of interest as it has been produced locally and is based on the story of the Middle Island penguin protection program where Maremma dogs are used as deterrents to foxes. This is a soft cover book of 75 pages. The front cover is white with multi-coloured illustrations of animals and the back cover has white printed material superimposed on a green-coloured photograph of Middle Island. Ballarat Clarendon College
Blazer pocket
This blazer pocket is from Ann (Price) Royal's Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies College blazer. Ann attended CPLC 1947 - 1957. Blazer pockets were embroidered with the school crest and additional embroidery was added during a student's years at College to reflect school colours and leadership roles. School colours were awarded for participation and leadership in various sport, house and academic pursuits. Ann's pocket, and the accompanying authorisation receipt reflect her receipt of the following awards: Athletics Colours (1952 - 1957), Hockey Colours (1954 - 1957) , Cairns House colours, school colours (1957) as well as leadership roles as Prefect (1957), House Captain (1957) and Sports Captain (1956). Students removed their pockets after graduation to keep as a momento of their school years. The authorisation receipt indicates that Ann's family chose not to have the final embroidery for Aths 1957, Hockey 1957 added to the pocket - probably because these awards would have been identified at the end of Ann's final school year. Book - Conrick of Nappa Merrie Revisited
This book is a 2015 transcription of a 1995 book by Helen Tolcher. It contains the story of the establishment in the 1870s of the Nappa Merrie station on the South Australian- Queensland border on the Coopers Creek. The station was established by John Conrick after he and three other men set off with 1600 cattle in 1872 from Koroit in Victoria, arriving at the new property site eleven months later. John Conrick (1852-1926) was the son of Patrick and Ellen Conrick who were farmers in the Tower Hill area. John Conrick had four sons who continued to run Nappa Merrie until family connections to the property ceased in 1960. This book is of interest as a record of the legend-making overland cattle droving feat by Koroit resident, John Conrick and three others in the early 1870s and of the establishment of an important property in Queensland following the overland trip. This is a soft cover book of 132 pages. The cover is multi-coloured with photographs of John Conrick and the Dig Tree site at Coopers Creek. The pages contain a preface, 19 chapters of text and an index. There are several maps and many black and white and colour photographs. conrick family of koroit, nappa merrie property, queensland, warrnambool -

Tool - Water Pump, c.1960
A windmill may be considered one of the most iconic sights of Australian Farming life. A pump like this rest at the heart of all such windmills, turning wind energy into water for farmers both here in Australia and worldwide alike. The water windmills access is referred to as an aquifer, an underground layer of water trapped in rocks but accessible with use of water wells and windmills. Australia is home to an underground aquifer known as the Great Artesian Basin. It is the largest and deepest aquifer in the world. Stretching over 1,700,000 square kilometres, the Basin underlies nearly a quarter of the continent including most of Queensland, the south- east corner of the Northern Territory, the north-east part of South Australia and the northern part of New South Wales. The basin is 3,000 metres deep in places and is estimated to contain 64,900 cubic kilometres of groundwater. To try and give this number context, a megalitre is a million litres. The Great Artesian Basin contains 65,000 million megalitres of water. This would be enough to cover all the land on the planet in almost half a metre of water.Lift style piston pump typical of an Australian farm connected to a multi-bladed windmill. Leisure object - Sheet Music, My Grampian Rose, 1940s
This is a waltz piece of music with words and music by Ruby Wharrie. Mrs Wharrie is best known for her doll-making business which she operated in Stawell, Victoria with her husband and son. Mrs Wharrie was the designer of the dolls which were made in the 1940s and 50s. One doll was named ‘Shurl’ to cash in on the popularity of the child actress Shirley Temple and the consequent popularity of the Shirley Temple doll. Stawell is a provincial city situated close to the Grampians mountain range and the title of the music reflects Mrs Wharrie’s interest in the area. ‘My Grampian rose’ is a person and the theme of the music is the fulfilment of love - ‘I am coming back to you, my little Grampian Rose’. This music is of interest as it has been written by a person who lived in western Victoria. It has Ruby Wharrie’s signature inside the front cover, making it more valuable. It is also an example of the sweet and sentimental music produced during the 1940s and 50s as a foil to the sadness and brutality of the world war. This is sheet music of four pages (two pages printed back to back) with the printed music on three pages and the cover having a multi-coloured illustration of the Grampians mountain range in Victoria. It is in good condition and has an old catalogue number ‘94’ on the back page. Equipment - Boiler, T & F Johnson, boilermakers, late 19th century
A steam boiler like this late 18th century boiler, is often called a colonial boiler. Steam boilers were used in factories throughout Australia, mounted over similar designs of brick furnaces. This heat from the fire travels through the tubes in this fire tube boiler and the water heats as it circulates around them. Another kind of boiler is a water tube boiler, in which the water is inside the tubes and the heat of the combustion surrounds the tubes. The boiler in our collection burned wood as fuel but others of this design could also burn coal, coke, gas and liquid fuels. The boiler was made by T & F Johnson, boilermakers. In 1922 their factory was located at Coventry Street, South Melbourne. They were still advertising their 'Colonial, multi, vertical boilers, all sizes' at the same address in 1934. The connected pressure gauge, made in London by Dewrance, measures 0 to 400 pounds per square inch. John Dewrance is renowned as a pioneer of the steam locomotive in the early 19th century. He founded John Dewrance & Co. in South London in 1844. His son Sir John Dewrance took over in 1879. In 1939 the company became a subsidiary of Babcock & Wilcox, and was eventually owned by Emerson. How the boiler works: - A boiler is about two-thirds filled with water and heat is applied, in this case in the form of burning wood. The heat is transferred through the metal of the boiler to the water. When the water boils the steam rises to the top, and as it escapes from the boiler the steam pressure builds up in the steam space to later be released to do work; drive machinery such as ship and train engines, turbines, presses, wheels, and driving belts to operate looms and saws. The heat associated with the boiler can be used for preserving food, sterilising, factory manufacturing processes, and steaming wood for shipbuilding. Every boiler has several components fitted for safe operation: - - Safety valves - Gauge glass - Pressure gauge - Main steam stop valve - Water check valve - Blowdown valve - Manhole doorThe boiler is a significant item that gives us a snapshot of early Melbourne's industrial history. It is an example of the technological advancement during the Industrial Revolution where steam-driven machinery and motors could perform tasks more efficiently than manual labour. The makers were one of many boilermaker businesses in Melbourne during the early late-19th andearly 20th centuries. The maritime trade and skills of boilermaking are still learned and applied today. The Dewrance steam pressure gauge connected to the boiler was made by the London firms foundered by John Dewrance. He was renowned for developing the steam locomotive in the early 19th century.Boiler; a horizontal cylindrical underfired steam boiler. It is a multi-tubular design and is timber plank-clad, with brass fittings and pressure gauges. The boiler has an iron door at one end with a metal chimney above it. It is installed over a brick-enclosed solid fuel furnace. Two large, wood-mounted pressure gauges are connected to the boiler and have inscriptions. An inscription is on a red, cast iron plaque above the boiler door. The boiler's maker is T & F Johnson, South Melbourne. Sigmoidoscope Rigid, Mid to late 1900s
This item was used before the flexible sigmoidoscope (1996) and before the introduction of fibre optics late 1900s. The 1900s saw an incredible leap forward in the field of medical procedures. The ability to visually see what was happening within the human body (in real time) provided greater analysis about certain biological abnormalities during a greater time elapse than before. This procedure involved less trauma to the patient and greater flexibility to the Physician in treatment schemes. The rigid signoidscope, however provided the first visual of the colon in situ, but was highly invasive to the patient. This item was used in the Mount Beauty Hospital for qualified Physicians to use in their diagnostic evaluation of patients. This would not be an instrument used by a General Physician. This item is still a internal observatory method which may, in some instances, cause some minor complications. This item does point to the level of medical diagnostics, equivalent to those available in larger towns and cities, which brings this rural area (once considered to be an isolated region) to a higher level of medical care. This rigid 35 cm long sigmoidoscope (internal probe) is made of stainless steel outer hollowed rounded rod, which permits the use of both a fixed (very thin) lighting rod and two flexible cord lights access. Both the lighting rod and the flexible lights can be lowered within the main rod to allow the physician to see the colon at the bottom of the rod. These items are all contained within a specifically inlaid wooden box. The box has separate open compartments for the main instruments and a small lidded compartment containing replacement light bulbs. The hollowed tube permits the physician to visually observe the signoid (an S shaped part) of the colon. On the stainless steel main rod body are engraved the lengths of the body,in centimetres ,with numbers starting at the five centimeter mark and then every five centimetres up to the thirty centimetre mark. On the front inside rim of the box are two inlaid white plastic strips with black print, "ALLEN & HANBURYS Ltd" and the other "LONDON"medical diagnostics, sigmoidoscope examinations, medical examinations, hospital equipment -

Biscuit Tin, Ballarat Products Limited (Sunshine Biscuit Co.), Mid 20th century
This tin came from the Sunshine Biscuit Factory in Ballarat. James Long established a confectionery business in Ballarat in 1854 and in 1921 it was known as the Sunshine Biscuit Company. In 1923 the factory was destroyed by fire and rebuilt. During World War Two 80% of the factory products went to the armed services. In 1947 the company was known as Ballarat Products Ltd and in 1962 it was called Sunshine Biscuits Ltd. In 1977 the factory was used to produce dry pet food (Friskies). The building was closed in 1991 and the site developed to include a supermarket, shops and housing. Up till about the late 1950s biscuits were mostly not packaged but sold loose by the pound in grocery stores from tins such as this. Broken biscuits were also sold at a cheaper price. Some biscuits were also sold at that time in smaller tins. This tin is of interest as an example of the tins from which biscuits were sold in the first half of the 20th century. It will be useful for display. This is a rectangular-shaped biscuit tin which is much rusted. The tin has a multi-coloured paper label that has been pasted around the sides. Much of this label has been torn away. The label shows images of biscuits.
