This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. House is commonly spelt as "Payneswicke".From: Glen Eira Heritage Management Plan (1996) by Andrew Ward and Associates "Payneswicke" is locally significant as a prominent and substantially intact villa of its period, distinguished by its cast cement enrichment, unpainted stuccoed surfaces and commanding aspect to the south-west. Its role for a period as home for local builder, Patrick Millane (compare no. 11 Gladstone Parade) is of interest. In 1889, a nine roomed brick house was in the course of erection on the site. The house was completed in 1890 and Millane took up residence. Millane continued as owner/ occupant in 1894. However, in 1899, although Millane still occupied the house, ownership had been taken over by the Land Mortgage Bank. By 1910, Andrew Brown was occupant. Occupancy passed to Edward Brown by 1920 and to Miss A.N. Brown by 1930. Giacomo Barozzi was born at Vignola. He was called Vignola after the name of the town where he was born. Giacomo was an Italian architect of 16th century. He was among those Italian architects who spread the Italian Renaissance style throughout Western Europe. His two masterpieces are the Villa Farnese at Caprarola and the Jesuits' Church of the Gesù in Rome. A blue cloth hard cover book. Made by a German Prisoner of War in Camp 13 (Murchison) and given to a member of the garrison, R. E. O'Hara. Internees / POW's made many items from largely scrap material during their time in the camps. This item holds historical and cultural significance as an example of the ingenuity of internees & how many occupied their time in camps, shaping the cultural and creative life of those in the camps. Also a possible indicator of relationship between garrison and internees. This manuscript was the brain child of German, Adolf Wilke, Afrika Korp, Prisoner of War. In a cell in Camp 13 he watched smoke from a chimney of the Recreation Hall where his mates were discussing a play. The verses describe various members of the group and their activities. The cartoonist was Count Hans Wolter van Gruenewaldt, a German mining engineer who escaped internment in South Africa, ending as a prisoner in Camp 13. This is a copy of the original. Only 3 copies of the original were made by Gerry von Gruenewaldt - one for Adolf Wilke, one for Gus Pohlig and one for himself. Gerry had a photographed copy made, printed and bound and donated it to the Tatura Museum.Cream coloured card front and back, bound together with a black multi ring binder. From 1955 Alan Marshall's home was a bungalow at the rear of his sister's house at Eltham. The first bungalow burnt down. Its replacement shown here still stands. In March 2020 the property was sold. It was last sold previously in November 1982. No mention was made in the advertising regarding the heritage protected bungalow in the rear yard and advertising material presented it as having future potential to develop STCA (Subject To Council Approval). Concerned local members of the community alerted to EDHS to the pending upcoming sale and Council was also alerted to the sale and the potential risk presented to the heritage protected bungalow. In 2021 an updated amendment, C133nill, was made to the Nillumbik Planning Scheme in response to a planning application to develop the property following its sale. The Minster of Planning approved and gazetted the Amendment. Gazettal occurred on 25th November 2021. A copy of the gazetted Amendment is available on website of the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning at www.planning.vic.gov.au/schemes-and-amendments/browse-amendments.
