Photograph - W2 class 567 Transporting art tram - Peter Corrigan
... Photograph shows W2 class tram 567 in Art Tram livery...Photograph shows W2 class tram 567 in Art Tram livery ...Photograph shows W2 class tram 567 in Art Tram livery possibly at the Simpson St sidings. Large wording on one side reads "Mother Knows" with a Japanese naval ensign or flag painted between the words, possibly cover a third word. The artist was Peter Corrigan, the work using the Japanese flag created controversy at the time. The second and third photos show the flag covered over. The tram was subsequently repainted during 1978. From the Museum's webpage on Transporting Art: "Peter Corrigan’s cheeky No. 567 created an international incident – the Japanese Embassy lodged a diplomatic protest over his use of their naval ensign with the enigmatic slogan ‘Mother Knows’. The tram was hurriedly withdrawn, and the offending flags were quickly overpainted before No. 567 re-entered traffic. By report, Corrigan was less than impressed by this act of official censorship. Even in its adulterated form, No. 567 did not last, as it was overpainted in 1982". ... of children and families. This 1987 Grade 4/5 class photograph from ...This 1987 Grade 4/5 class photo from Jacana Primary School offers a vivid glimpse into suburban school life in Melbourne during a time of significant social and urban change. Founded in 1959, Jacana Primary was more than just a place of education—it served as a vital community hub until its closure in the early 2000s. Over the decades, it became a space where students and teachers forged lasting connections, built a shared identity, and created enduring memories. The image highlights the school’s dedication to creating an inclusive and nurturing environment for all learners. It also subtly reflects the increasing cultural diversity of Jacana in the late 20th century, as suburban expansion brought together families from a wide array of backgrounds. As part of the school’s visual archive, this photograph enriches our understanding of how public education helped shape community identity, foster social cohesion, and leave a lasting imprint on generations of children and families. This 1987 Grade 4/5 class photograph from Jacana Primary School offers a compelling window into suburban educational life in Melbourne during a period of profound social and urban transformation. Established in 1959, Jacana Primary School functioned as a cornerstone of the local community until its closure in the early 2000s. Beyond its role as an educational institution, the school fostered a strong sense of belonging, identity, and intergenerational connection among students, staff, and families. The image is significant for its representation of inclusive educational values and the evolving cultural landscape of Jacana in the late 20th century. As suburban development introduced greater demographic diversity, the school became a microcosm of broader societal change, welcoming families from varied cultural and linguistic backgrounds. As part of Jacana Primary’s visual archive, this photograph contributes to a deeper understanding of how public education shaped community identity, promoted social cohesion, and left a lasting legacy in the lives of those it served. Photograph - Actor Megan Williams as conductress Alice Sullivan, GTV 9 - Channel 9, David Kemp, late 1970s
Photograph shows actor Megan Williams dressed as conductress Alice Sullivan posing at the right side driver's doorway of what may be an L class car, suggested by the metal downpipe from the roof to the undercarriage and the saloon windows. The photograph is closely cropped but also appears to show a male in jacket or coat inside the saloon behind the driver's compartment. The Sullivans was a successful period drama series screened on Channel 9 between 1976 and 1983. It traced the lives of a Melbourne family during the 1939-45 war and its aftermath. As women were 'finally' employed by the tramways from 1941 because of man-power shortages, Alice Sullivan's new job helped highlight the changing societal views of the 1940s. The series was know for its attention to historical details, so Alice is dressed in the conductress uniform of the 1940s - brown tunic with brass buttons and belt, collar and tie, a cap (which may not exactly match that of the day), brown skirt below the knees, stockings and flat brown lace-up shoes. Alice also wears a conductor's coin bag with ticket wallet and two blocks 4 penny tickets strategically located for the camera. One error in the historical detail is that the coin bag is hung solely around her neck, which was never done because of the weight of the coins and tickets. A more eleborate harness was soon provided for conductresses. Another error is the placement of the ticket blocks which would have easily worked loose and lost, resulting in a large deduction for the conductress's wage.Yields information about 1940s conductresses and their representation in popular drama Black and white print with note on rearIn pencil: "Channel 9 Sullivans"megan williams, alice sullivan, conductress, l class, the sullivans, conductress uniform, coin bag -
