Tool - Adze, Ward & Payne Ltd, Between 1843 to Mid 20th Century
An adze is an ancient and versatile cutting tool and has been in use for thousands of years. Adze are similar to an axe but with the cutting edge perpendicular to the handle rather than parallel. They have been used since the Stone Age. Adzes are hand tools used for smoothing or carving wood. The subject item was made by Ward & Payne of the Limbrick Works at Hillsborough, Sheffield England manufacturers of hand-forged tools. Their trademark registered in 1850 was a Letter "W" & "P" stamped into the steel. The firm was established by David Ward (1767-1822) in 1803 the company became David Ward & Sons, in 1837 after Ward's son Edward joined the firm. In 1845 Henry Payne the founder's son-in-law became a partner but died in 1850 after which the company reverted to the Ward family. The business then concentrated on making carving tools, chisels and gouges. In 1882 David Ward's grandson David Ward Jr. (1835-1889) purchased land and built a factory at Sheffield North known as the "Limerick Wheel". For a time Wards operated from both 106-114 West Street Sheffield and at Limbrick Road, Hillsborough on the river Loxley. By 1911 they had expanded into making spades, forks, sheep shears and many other types of edged tools including drills and wood planes. In 1967 Wilkinson Sword purchased all the company's share capital and continued to sell Ward & Payne tools until 1970 when a fire burned the factory down and housing development was built on the site. The subject item is significant as it gives a snapshot of the technological development of sailing ships and their operation before steam-powered vessels took over around the world. Tools such as the subject item demonstrate the traditional craftsmanship and skill of the shipwright and the aesthetic quality of the timber ships designs of the time. Adze with wooden handle curved painted green with patent number and maker's name inscribed on inside curve of blade. Inscribed "Patd 561 Ward" "2w". flagstaff hill, warrnambool, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, smoothing tool, hand tool, carpenders tool, adze, coopers tool, woodworking tools -

Soda Syphon, 1900-1930’s
This soda syphon (or siphon) was distributed by John Fletcher of Warrnambool, and made by the British Syphon Mfg. Co. Ltd. of London between the 1900s-1930s. It comprises a multi-sided clear glass bottle, an internal glass tube and a metal release valve and spout on the top. It was used to dispense pressurised, effervescent soda water. It was often used as an alternative to water or added to fruit juices and cordials. The text on this bottle states that it remains the property of the retailer, John Fletcher, and must be returned to him. Customers were asked for a deposit on the bottle, which would be refunded when the bottle was exchanged or continued as the deposit on a fresh bottle. Returned bottles would be cleaned and recharged with the gas and sold again. Soda syphon are bottles, glass or metal, with a release valve and spout on the top. The valve lever on the top of the syphon, when depressed, causes the gas in the syphon to force the water up through the tube and out of the spout. The bottle’s mechanism gives the water an effervescent quality to make bubbly drinks such as sparkling mineral water, soda water and sparkling water. ABOUT JOHN FLETCHER John Fletcher bought the Union Cordial Factory in Koroit Street, Warrnambool that was previously owned by John Davis. Fletcher operated the factory as J Fletcher, John Fletcher and Fletcher’s. He eventually sold his business and stock in 1930 to Ralph Reeves, who may have continued using Fletcher’s supply of drink containers before renewing them with stock showing his own brand. The soda syphon is representative of drink containers used in the later 19th and early 20th century. It also represents the system of returnable, recyclable containers. Soda syphon (or siphon). Glass bottle, clear, multi sided, tapered from a heavy glass base to a narrower shoulder, with glass tube at centre connected to metal pump mechanism at the top. Has elaborate frosted label for J. Fletcher of Warrnambool. Made by the British Syphon Mfg. Co. Ltd. London. Bottle remains the property of John Fletcher, Warrnambool.Metal syphon has impressed "J FLETCHER" and logo "S S" in centre of two concentric circles with text between circles "BRITISH SYPHON MFG. CO. Glue Bottle, Joseph Armstrong Angus & Co, 1920s -1950
Angus & Co. was a large ink, gum, and paste manufacturing company established in Melbourne in 1896 by Joseph Armstrong Angus (1860-1936.) The company's premises included a bottle works to supply bottles for its many products. The company supplied various inks, gums, and paste too many business and domestic customers. Mucilage is a thick, gluey substance produced by nearly all plants and some microorganisms. These micro-organisms include protists who use it for their locomotion. The direction of their movement is always opposite to that of the secretion of mucilage. It is a polar glycoprotein and an exopolysaccharide. The mucilage in plants plays a role in the storage of water and food, seed germination, and thickening membranes. Cacti (and other succulents) and flax seeds are especially rich sources of mucilage. Mucilage is edible. It is used in medicine as it relieves irritation of mucous membranes by forming a protective film. It is known to act as a soluble, or viscous, dietary fiber that thickens the faecal mass, an example being the consumption of fiber supplements containing Psyllium seed husks. Traditionally, marshmallows were made from the extract of the mucilaginous root of the marshmallow plant (Althaea Officinalis). The inner bark of the slippery elm (Ulmus rubra), a North American tree species, has long been used as a demulcent and cough medicine and is still produced commercially for that purpose. Mucilage mixed with water has been used as a glue, especially for bonding paper items such as labels, postage stamps, and envelope flaps. Differing types and varying strengths of mucilage can also be used for other adhesive applications, including gluing labels to metal cans, wood to china, and leather to pasteboard. An early item from the late 1920s for office use as a glue by a well-known Melbourne manufacturer of office supplies of inks, glues, rubber stamps, and mucilage gums, etc.Bottle of Mucilage. The series was won by Victorian racer Len Lukey driving his Cooper T45 Climax and in the opening round of the series his own much modified Cooper T23 which was known as the Lukey-Bristol. Lukey was one of only a few drivers who attempted to complete the gruelling twelve race schedule, the longest in ADC history. Lukey finished just two points ahead of his season long rival, Alec Mildren from the ACT [1] (Cooper-Climax). Stan Jones, the father of F1 World Champion Alan Jones, was third in the championship, using four different cars over the course of the series. Race victories were shared around with Mildren taking three wins. Lukey, Jones and Bill Patterson each took two wins, with single victories going to Jack Brabham, Bib Stillwell and New Zealand Maserati 250F racer Ross Jensen. Clothing - Clothing, lady's nylon stockings 'Prestige Wonderfoot'', mid 20thC
Prestige Limited was formed in 1922 by George Foletta to manufacture fine silken hosiery. The company had acquired the Atlas Knitting and Spinning Mills Pty Ltd which had been established in 1920 and produced "Prestige hosiery" from 1921. Prestige Limited merged with Holeproof Hosiery Company (Australia) Pty Ltd in 1964. Both were taken over by Pacific Dunlop in 1968. The Prestige name was dropped in 1978/79. George Gotardo Foletta (1892-1973), hosiery and knitwear manufacturer, was born on 30 January 1892 at Northcote, Melbourne, eldest son of Victorian-born parents Henry Gotardo Foletta, a stonemason of Swiss extraction, and his wife Gertrude, née Bright. Henry repaired the depression-ravaged fortunes of his family by starting a successful fancy goods commission-agency.....George persuaded the demoralized board to restructure around a quality-first marketing policy. By 1924, when George A. Bond & Co. Ltd ( Sydney) was liquidated, Prestige was back in the black. About this time the company became the first Australian knitter to make fully-fashioned silk stockings, outselling the best imported brands and giving Prestige dominance of the local hosiery market. With the arrival of British-trained Leslie Gough in 1926, Prestige entered its period of greatest expansion. By 1933 it was spinning its own silk yarn, had diversified into lingerie and commenced business in New Zealand; three years later it was spinning imported rayon filament into hosiery yarn.A pair of unworn lady's brown nylon 'service weight' stockings made by 'Prestige' Pty Ltd. in the original boxBox Lid: House of / Prestige / ‘monogram’ / WONDERSOFT / SERVICE WEIGHT “FOOT COMFORT’ NYLONS. Machine - Grain hopper/grinder
This grinder is attached to the Sundial stationary engine by a leather belt. The grinder would have been used to grind grain for flour and by adjustment for animal and poultry feed. The hopper is constructed of wood but the grinding mechanism below is marked J. Buncle, Iron Works, N. Melbourne. John Buncle (1822 – 1889) was born in Edinburgh and completed an apprenticeship in engineering and piano making. He worked with firms designing steam engines and locomotives and in 1846 was working in the Vulcan foundry when he married Mary Ann Binns, the daughter of his employer. They had eleven children of whom eight survived infancy. The family arrived in Melbourne in 1852 at the height of the gold rush and he was immediately employed at Langlands foundry. Melbourne had an acute shortage of skilled tradesmen so after six months he started his own business using his various talents. As the gold rush subsided, he settled in to engineering and contracting and among other things, supplied the iron work for the Johnston Street bridge over the Yarra River. Gradually he turned to the design and manufacture of agricultural machinery and tools with which his name is chiefly associated. With his iron works in North Melbourne he was held in high esteem by his contemporaries, becoming the President of the Chamber of Manufacturers and serving two terms as Mayor of the Municipality of Hotham. He wrote Experiences of a Victorian Manufacturer with amusing anecdotes of conditions in early Melbourne. The company became J.Buncle & Son and finally in 1952, John Buncle-Commando Ltd. It finally went into liquidation in February 1957. Yellow wooden hopper on black grinder with blue parts mounted on green stand. CALAID H - Hearing Aid, National Acoustic Laboratories, Estimated date: late 70s early 80s
The first commercial digital hearing aid was created in 1987 by the Nicolet Corporation. The hearing aid contained a body-worn processor that had a hardwire connection with an ear mounted transducer. While the Nicolet Corporation’s hearing aid was not publicly successful and the company shortly folded, it was able to start a competition between companies to create more effective hearing aids. Two years later, in 1989, the behind-the-ear (BTE) digital hearing aid was launched. In addition to the Nicolet Corporation, Bell Laboratories expanded upon the hearing aid business by developing a hybrid digital-analog hearing aid. When the hearing aid was put on in the market, it was instantaneously successful. This development helped bring major changes to the world of the hearing aid. The next major milestone was creating an all-digital hearing aid. The Oticon Company developed the first digital hearing aid in 1995, but it was only distributed to audiological research centers for research on digital technology in the realm of acoustic amplification. The Senso was the first commercially successful, all-digital hearing aid, and was created by Widex in 1996. After the success of the Senso, Oticon began marketing their own hearing aid, the DigiFocus. Presently, the digital hearing aid is now become programmable. By making the hearing aid programmable, it has allowed hearing aids to be capable of regulating sound on their own, without using a separate control. The hearing aid can now adjust itself depending on what environment it is in and often does not even need a physical volume control button. These were the first behind the ear hearing aids manufactured by the National Acoustic Laboraties (NAL) in Australia Body worn hearing aid consisting of separate pieces, one for each ear with attached ear mould, for one ear, in original box. Provided and manufactured by the NAL (National Acoustic Laboratories), part of the Commonwealth Department of Health. "NAL" in centre of stylised map of Australia. "COMMONWEALTH/DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH" on inside of box. "IV" and "F.McD/RIGHT" manually etched on hearing aid. "II" manually etched on other hearing aid. "CAL AID H" inscribed on inside edge of hearing aid. -

Photograph, David Jamieson, editor of Ringwood Parish quarterly magazine "Insight", 06/1984
Jamieson's comments appear in an article surveying the Uniting Church, 7 years after union. "One member who disagrees with the church presents social justice issues is David Jamieson, who has been editor of the Ringwood parish quarterly magazine "Insight" since union. Mr Jamieson says he knows scores of people who find it very hard to accept what he considers is a bias in the presentation of social justice issues. 'I know a lot of people who are becoming alienated because they feel their side of the story is not being presented by the church. They feel only the radical side of justice issues is being hammered. I think the more conservative side has validity. My main concern is the flood of study booklets and material on social justice issues which look at them from only one angle. The bias is on greed, excessive profits and most unworthy aspects of the multi-nationals compared with the most humanitarian concerns of the left. No mention is made of humanitarian concern by big business or the extremes of the left — such as unwarranted industrial action and the effect that this has on the poor and unemployed. No mention is made of excessive wage demands by highly paid people who are pressuring for bigger flow-ons. ….. I do not believe the church should be neutral on political issues. In fact I agree with nearly all of its stands. But we should look at both sides before making up our minds. Only then should we be vocal in a political sense, no matter how one-sided."Full face, looking intently at the camera.C&N identification.jamieson, david, church union 7th anniversary, social justice -

Swimsuit, Marina Couture, circa 1960s
Marina Couture was a luxe swimwear line produced by Watersun in the 1960s. Polish-born designer David Waters first began producing swimwear in 1952. His mother Halina had recently opened a stall at Melbourne Queen Victoria Markets and was looking for swimsuits to sell; unable to find any she liked, she asked David to design something. He began making swimming costumes using his mother's sewing machine, in between his shifts working at a knitting factory. He had soon set up a small business in his parents' home, cutting patterns in one room while a machinist sewed them together in the next. His company, which he named Watersun, would become an iconic Australian swimwear label. During the early 1960s, Watersun developed its "Unquestionable Bra", an inbuilt moulded bra which was marketed as giving wearers a more natural bustline than other labels. The company was also known for its matching swimwear and beachwear, producing dresses, kaftans, tops and skirts in identical colours and prints to those used for many of its swimsuits. By 1967, the company was reportedly one of Australia's two biggest swimwear manufacturers, with over one hundred employees. Watersun was sold to Ada Productions in 1984 and was later acquired by Trackerjack Australasia. This swimsuit is believed to be one of a large quantity of samples, seconds and unsold Ada Productions stock donated to Brighton Historical Society in late 1990 by Brian Samuel, who worked at the company between 1979 and 1990.Silver lamé swimsuit featuring delicate brocade embellishment, an inbuilt underwire bra, a zippered back and elasticised edging on the legs and back.Label in bra, blue with gold crown logo and text: “MARINA COUTURE / 32”.swimwear, watersun, david waters, ada productions, melbourne designers, marina couture -

Clothing - Swimsuit, Ada of California, circa 1950s-60s
This swimsuit belonged to Audrey May Ferguson (nee Fulton), a longtime Brighton resident. Ada of California was a Melbourne swimwear company founded in the early 1950s by Brighton locals Ada and Toni Murkies. Born in Poland in 1922, Ada was 17 when the Second World War reached her doorstep. She and her family were torn from their home by Soviet soldiers and sent to a brutal labour camp in Siberia as part of a series of mass deportations. In order to escape the horrific conditions of the camp, Ada and her sister Barbara joined the Soviet-backed Polish Army. During her time in the military she became close with a handsome young Jewish officer, Lieutenant Antoni Murkies, who later became her husband. After the war Toni was awarded 15 medals including the highest Polish military honour, the Virtuti Militari. Ada was awarded 10 medals, including the Order of the Cross of Grunwald. Emigrating to Australia as postwar refugees in 1948, Ada and Toni arrived in Melbourne with little to their name. Working initially in garment factories and building their connections, by the mid-1950s the couple were able to start a company of their own, with Ada designing the garments and Toni managing the business. Within ten years, Ada of California swimwear was being sold in department stores throughout Australia, and the Murkies family were able to build a permanent home of their own in Brighton. By the early 1980s they had acquired several other major labels, including Watersun.Black one-piece rayon and cotton swimsuit. Straps button at back. Vehicle - Bicycle
In 1914, Mr and Mrs Arthur Hooke gave the name ‘Wandinong’ to their newly purchased property in Blackburn. The name was inspired by a recent cycling trip to Wandin in the foothills of the Dandenongs, as well as the title of a favourite book, Ethel Turner’s ‘The Camp at Wandinong’. Their property and the surrounding district had originally been owned by a series of property investors and speculators, and while some of it had been cleared for grazing, most of it was still covered in virgin bush; thickly covered with trees and undergrowth and rich in wild flowers and bird life. A small section of the Hooke’s property was cleared sufficiently to r\erect a house and some outbuildings, but the rest was left as n nature intended. Mar Arthur Hooke was a local property valuer but never owned a car, preferring to attend to business on his bicycle. He was still riding his bicycle in his eighties. Meanwhile, Mrs Hooke had developed a keen desire that the ‘Wandinong’ property remain intact; that it should ultimately be set aside as a place of refuge where like-minded people could go to enjoy peace and quiet amongst the native birds and bushland.|To this end, Mr and Mrs Hooke liaised with the Nunawading Council and an agreement was reached whereby the council would assume ownership of the property on their deaths. When Mr Hooke died in 1972, his wife transferred the land over to the council the following year. Mr and Mrs Arthur Hooke’s Grandson, William, and granddaughter, Christine, recently donated their grandmother’s bicycle to the Whitehorse Historical Society. They recall that their grandfather’s bicycle was given to a representative of the Nunawading Council for safekeeping some years ago. The date of 1926 is approximate and the location is almost certainly outside the Lyons' home in Sunbury Crescent. Arthur Lyons was known as 'Tiger'. This is one of a series of photos donated by Arthur Lyons. From 1907 a cab service operated from near the railway gates in Union Road. It was established and maintained by Mr C Fraser until c1916. George Rea either took over then or set up in opposition. Fred Lyons initially worked for George until he set up his own business. In time he changed over to a motor vehicle and continued his service until 1960. Frederick Adolphus Lyons (1891-1980) was born in Surrey Hills, son of Thomas and Catherine Lyons. He married Elizabeth Ruby Hall in 1918. They lived just around the corner at 55 Sunbury Crescent. The Lyons’ home in Sunbury Crescent was called ‘Knopshambury’ - this was probably a misspelling of Knockshanbally in Co Kilkenny, the birth place of Fred’s father, Thomas Edmund Josias Lyons (1846-1915). Arthur Lyons was born in Surrey Hills on 12 Jun 1920. He became a motor mechanic / welder and lived at 55 Sunbury Crescent. The donation was made while he was in hospital. He died shortly afterwards (23 Sep 1990). Donation was finalised by a neighbour, Mrs Florence Ann Armitstead, wife of Glen Victor Armitstead. Glen was a local hairdresser. They moved to 11 Sunbury Crescent after their marriage in 1939.
