Irish poet and balladeer Thomas Moore, best-known for penning The Minstrel Boy and The Last Rose of Summer, is honored in this statue prominently located in Sturt Street created by sculptor George Grant from white Carrara marble. George Grant was trained at the School of Art associated with the National Gallery of Victoria, apparently in the 1880s, and then worked as an artist, specialist house painter, and banner artist. Several of his paintings are held by the Ballarat Art Gallery. Moore`s writings range from lyric to satire, from prose romance to history and biography. His popular "Irish Melodies" appeared in ten parts between 1807 and 1835. Moore was a good musician and skillful writer of songs, which he set to Irish tunes, mainly of the 18th century. 1. Michael Peter Kelly (1853-1929) was born in Galway, Ireland and came to Australia in 1870. He was a director of many mines and was elected to the Bendigo Stock Exchange in 1882. At one point he was the chairman of the Exchange. He married Margaret Jane Carr in 1887 and they lived at "Norwood", Wills St., Bendigo. 2. Arthur Allsop (1856 - 1921) was a renowned athlete in many fields, including running, lacrosse, cricket, football and lawn bowls. He was an independent bookmaker and was elected to the Bendigo Stock Exchange in 1906. He was also a Past Grand Master of the MUIOOF lodge. After his time in Bendigo, and following the death of his wife in 1914, he moved to Melbourne and then Sydney where he died. A series of photos of Pugh at work. Clifton Pugh (1924-1990) was born at Richmond Victoria, and educated at various schools including Briar Hill Primary, Eltham Higher Elementary School and Ivanhoe Grammar. He studied art at the National Gallery School of Victoria 1948-52. Pugh is recognised as a one of Australia’s foremost painters. He is represented in major galleries throughout the country and overseas. He founded the “Dunmoochin” artists colony at Cottles Bridge. This front image from "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall, page 128 shows Pugh working on his portrait of Dame Mabel Balcombe Brookes (1890-1975). According to an entry in the Australian Dictionary of Biography for Dame Brookes, this Pugh portrait remains in the family. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' Information re James ''Hungry'' Tyson, born in New South Wales 1819, (no date,no source for re-printed document).- brief biography and mention of his commercial interests, especially in Bendigo (beef/cattle yards/slaughterhouse etc). His father William Tyson Came to Sydney in 1809 and became a policeman in the Appin district. James Tyson worked for stations before going to the Barwidgee run in Victoria with his brother William. Yards for the cattle were established at Goornong and at Back Creek, where a Slaughterhouse and butchery were also established. There is also mention of the Tysons reef being named after James Tyson. He died in 1898 on one of his properties inland from Brisbane. The Salvation Army was founded in England in 1865 and bonnets were introduced in the 1880s for women officers. These bonnets were worn until the 1960s. The Salvation Army came to Warrnambool in 1887 and was initially based in Raglan Parade before opening a citadel in Lava Street in 1905. In the mid 1960s they purchased the old Congregational Church and Manse at the corner of Lava and Henna Streets.This bonnet is a fine example of the bonnets worn by Salvation Army Officers as part of their uniform. The bonnet is made of black raffia with a brim. It has black and maroon grosgrain ribbbons around the front, sides and back. The maroon ribbon has THE SALVATION ARMY machine printed in gold letters. A grosgrain black strap is attached to the head band to enable the bonnet to be worn securely. The bonnet is lined with black cotton. The donors of this fur collar believe the collar to be between 80-90 years old. It was worn by the donor’s grandmother and mother as an accessory to Warrnambool and district balls and dances. It may have also been worn for warmth! The donors believe the fur would have been purchased in either Melbourne or Toorak. This fur could have been worn by either men or women. The Tawonga branch of the C.W.A. commenced on the 7th Feb. 1946 and often combined activities with the other branches in the Kiewa Valley. The C.W.A. aimed to improve health, welfare and education for women and children in the country. The Roper family were very involved for many years in the activities of the branch. Clare Roper collected and documented the history of the Tawonga C.W.A. and the Kiewa Valley C.W.A.. Women living in Tawonga were mostly on farms and, in 1946, when the branch commenced would have been feeling more remote with WW11 having had an effect of available workers and the well being of the women and children.Black wooden plaque sloped to a narrow gold coloured border surrounding a black surface with a gold badge shaped plaque. From its earliest days, the Ithacan Philanthropic Society has conducted an annual family picnic held at country towns on Melbourne's urban fringe. For many years Bacchus Marsh was a popular venue where this picnic group was photographed. Women would prepare delicious traditional Greek food and families would group together to enjoy a wonderful picnic spread. The annual Ithacan Picnic has been a very important event on the society's social calendar. In the early days, as many of the families ran family businesses such as fruit shops, fish shops and cafes, Sunday was the only break they had away from their work. The picnic gave them a chance to relax and to catch up with extended family and friends. Today the picnic continues to be an extremely popular day for the members where generations of Australian Ithacans get the opportunity to reunite.
