The Mystery of John McMahon's Grave, Big Hill mentions granite stone markers south of the Tunnel. Some believed he was buried there, but further research has found he is buried at the Kangaroo Flat Cemetery in the Roman Catholic section, Grave No. 1134 on 20 May, 1874. Also mentioned is his widow was appointed Gate Keeper at Ravenswood on 2 September, 1874. Also mentioned is the death of Frederick Benton, who died on 24 February, 1860 of peritonitis. Joseph Edward Teague (1859 -1925) Son of John and Annie Ellison, Joseph was born at Heathcote. Joined the police force in 1890 and had the number 4324. He served at several stations including Elmore and Strathfieldsaye. During his career he received several commendations for arrests and convictions. He left the Police Force in 1912 and died 112/11/1925. He is buried at Fawkner cemetery Two documents. 1. PAstor Friedrich Leypoldt was born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1844 and came to Australia in 1869 and became pastor of the Bendigo Lutheran church. He married Elise Julia Buddee in 1870. He served as pastor for 60 years. On the occasion of his 25th anniversary he was presented with 80 sovereigns raised by donations from the German community and other Bendigo citizens. He died 1/1/1932 and is buried in the Lutheran section of the White Hills Cemetery. 2. Mr Henry Iser was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1854 and emigrated to Australia in the late 1880's. He had various positions before travelling to Sydney to take up a position on the island of Yap in the Carolina group, Micronesia. Ill health caused his return to Bendigo where he was an accountant, firstly for Lyceum Grocery Store and then Cohn Brothers Brewery. He brought his fiancée, Caroline Collen from Germany and they married in 1888.When his brother-in-law Willem Humme became ill, Henry joined him at his timber yard and ironmongery, eventually being made a partner. Leslie John Ellison was born in Horsham in 1920. He was the son of Charles Ellifson (1892-1969) and Lilly May Rogers (1897-!966). He became a teacher and in the 1940s he dropped the "f" from his surname. In 1949 he married Aileen Beryl Ervin (6/3/1924-24/5/2004) John was interested in history and specially in Christian church history. He recorded his thoughts and research in writing. John died 25/7/1981 and is buried with his wife at the Kangaroo Flat Cemetery. Frederick "Fred" Fifield Hall was born in Carlton, Victoria in 1878. Son of Frederick Hall and Jessie Wallace Hall (nee Lloyd), Fred would marry Elsa May Daegner in 1899 with whom he had a son named Anthony. Hall died on 27th September 1956 in Mont Albert, Victoria and was buried at the Box Hill Cemetery. Hall was known as a solo pianist and the first conductor of the Station Orchestra at 3LO (ABC Radio Station). He was also a notable music editor at Allan & Co. Earning early recognition at 16 years of age when he conducted the Sydney Orchestra, Hall was a versatile composer having written in a variety of styles including solos for the piano, violin and cello, operas, foxtrots and orchestral suites. Publications indicate that between 300 and 400 of his compositions were published. The most famous of which was "Goodbye Melbourne Town" which he wrote with Lyricist Leonard Nelson. "Let Me Go to Bendigo" was another of their joint compositions. Leonard Nelson Snell, professionally known as Leonard Nelson, was born c. 1874 in Melbourne and grew up in Kew (he was 76 in 1950). Nelson married Lily Maud Haight in Victoria in 1897 and had six children named Roy, Dorothy, Leonard, Lionel, Austin and Marie. Nelson died on the 13 August 1962 in Blackheath, NSW and was buried at the local cemetery. Nelson had a varied resume including Cattle station work, song writing and public speaking. Nelson was known for his enjoyment of Australian poetry having known many of the greats personally and could recite works from memory. In his later life, Nelson worked as an entertainer for hire at banquets and other social gatherings. No. 181 Allan's popular sixpenny edition "Sung with great success by Leonard Nelson" Allan & Co. The Beebe name was well-known in Bendigo in the last quarter of the 19th and the early part of the 20th centuries. From 1875, William Beebe senior, monumental mason, occupied a site in the centre on the city, in Mitchell Street opposite King Street. Death was more part of life in those days, and the Beebes were there to provide the burial monuments. Later, he took his sons into the business, which grew as Beebe and Son. Many examples of their work can be found in the local cemeteries. William Beebe senior (1830-1891) was born in Rutland, the smallest English county in 1830, to stonemason Chamberlain Beebe and Susannah Clements. William emigrated to Victoria in 1854 and after engaging on unknown works in Port Fairy, Dunkeld, and Melbourne arrived in Bendigo. His obituary records that he commenced work here on the site of the Bank of Australasia (opposite the Shamrock Hotel), which would have been no later than 1856. He took up a 13 acre selection on the site of Rocky Vale Villa in 1864 and continued to select or purchase further parcels of adjoining land until he owned some 150 acres, much of it unfit for cultivation. He was a keen gardener and had a garden and orchard around the house. William took over 20 years to build the two-story sandstone and granite house "Rocky Vale Villa". The house was constructed from sandstone sourced "from an adjacent ridge of rocks" (Bendigo Advertiser 28/9/1891). Granite from Harcourt was used for lintels and quoins. Not long before he died, William was still adding to the house. In the Codicil to his will, he states that "I have just built and completed two additional rooms to my Dwelling house situe at Inglewood Road aforesaid" (dated 19/9/1891). In 1853 Thomas Abell opened a carpentry and undertakers in Bridge St, Bendigo. In 1855 the business moved to a two story building on the corner of Bridge St and Cemetery St. In 1856 the business was bought by George Oakley. His son William operated the business in partnership with Peter Fizelle from 1886 but this partnership was dissolved, rather acrimoniously in 1895 with Oakley opening a rival business. In 1898 Peter's daughter Elizabeth Fizelle married Irishman Michael Mulqueen and from 1900 the business became known as Fizelle and Mulqueen. Peter Fizelle died in 1901 but the company retained his name until 1934 when it becam known as Mulqueen and Sons. Richard Jennings was a native of Cambourne, in Cornwall, born c. 1831. He arrived in Victoria in 1851, returned to Cornwall and then came back to Bendigo. He was the manager of several mines in the Bendigo goldfields and retired from these posts in 1891. His home "Helston" is in Backhaus St. Long Gully. John S Wearne First Manager of the Specimen Hill Co. W.H. Thomas Manager from September 1873. OBITUARY. Residents of the Borough of Eaglehawk will regret to learn of the death of Mr. John Wearne, a former well-known member of that community. The late Mr. Wearne, who was 68 years of age, came to Victoria in 1857. He was the first manager of the Specimen Hill mine and was also largely interested in several other mines in the district. Some considerable time ago he retired from active pursuits, and went to reside at Strathfieldsaye, whence he removed to Ascot Vale some years ago, where he lived until his death, his remains were brought to Eaglehawk by the mid-day train yesterday and conveyed to the family vault in the Eaglehawk Cemetery, many friends joining the cortege. Six members of the family survive — two sons and four daughters — Mrs. Wearne having pre-deceased her husband some time ago. OBITUARY. Arthur Henry Miers, pictured in the photograph played for cricket, football and baseball teams in Kew for a number of decades in the first half of the twentieth century. He was born on 22 November 1901, the son of Rodolph Theophilus Miers (1874-1951) and Margaret Frances (Margaretta) Fry (1875-1958). He had two brothers, Rodolph Cecil Miers (1904-80) and Charles Wilfred Miers (1906-88), and a sister Marjorie Elizabeth Miers (1911-84). Hayman was the son of a Bank manager, Spencer Lewis Hayman and Agnes Lindsay Hayman. He was born in Exeter S.A. on 23/11/1916. He enlisted in the Australia Army at the age of 23 on 13/05/1940. His service number was VX14987. Hayman was a leader of a fighting patrol and served in multiple sites in Syria and Lybia. During his service in Lybia he lead his campaign through great difficulty and bravery in Tobruk. Although wounded by a grenade, he continued to lead his men into an enemy stronghold until resistance from a joining post compelled him to break off the engagement. He successfully brought his party back with very few casualties. Hayman was awarded the military cross in 1941. He was a Lieutenant when awarded, and was made captain of the 2/24 Australian Infantry Battalion shortly afterwards. He was killed in action on the 11/07/1942 and is buried in the El Alamein war cemetery. His father was flown to London to receive the medal. The inscription on his headstone reads; “Beloved son of Spencer and Agnes Hayman of Bendigo” (AII.A.21. – cemetery/memorial reference number). As an item owned by a ‘Tobruk hero ’ who was awarded the eminent military cross for bravery, ‘forceful leadership’ and ‘splendid courage’, this trunk is of national historic and social significance. It also has great interpretive capacity as an item that speaks of an impressive military story. Standard Army issue trunk. 88cm L x 51cm W x 33cm D. Dull grey in colour. There is provision for a tray to be fitted just under the lid. This tray was the same physical size as the trunk. The base has 2 cleats (88cm x 5.5cm), made of timber, to keep the trunk off the ground. An additional hasp and keeper have been fitted (near the centre of the lid) to hold it shut. Thomas William Francis No 2584. Enlisted on 7.7.1915 in 4th reinforcements 29th Batt AIF age 25 years 6 months. Embarked for Eygpt 14.3.16, embark for France 16.6.1916, reported missing 19/20.7.1916, listed as KIA 20.7.16 (Fromelles) no known grave. The photo is one of a number that originally hung in the "Gallery of Honour" foyer of the Soldiers Memorial Institute Pall Mall Bendigo now the Bendigo Military Museum. In 2008 a mass grave was found with 250 remains in. On 12.4.2013 it was announced that the remains of Thomas Francis had been identified.
