This invitation to a ‘Conversazione’ to celebrate the Federation of the six colonies in Australia into the six States of Australia in 1901 was sent to the invitees after the event to keep as a souvenir of the occasion. The event was hosted by the Government of Victoria. The certificate was designed by George Brougham Austin, a Melbourne architect and artist employed by the Victorian Department of Public Works. He also designed many of the public decorations displayed in Melbourne during the Federation celebrations. Austin’s original work was lithographed by an artist at Sands and McDougall, Melbourne. This particular invitation was sent to George Rolfe and his wife, Annie. George Rolfe (1836-1919), a tea merchant from Melbourne, began buying blocks of land near the mouth of the Hopkins River in Warrnambool in the 1870s. By the early 1880s he owned 50 acres of land in the town and some nearby farming properties. He used the building on the ]and near the mouth of the Hopkins River as holiday accommodation and called the property, Lyndoch. He improved the property with the additions of stables, jetty, boathouse, bone and chaff sheds, reservoir and windmill and extensive gardens. Rolfe spent most of his later life at Lyndoch. Today the property is the site of an Aged Care facility. This certificate is of considerable importance for two reasons: 1. It is an important and attractive memento of a signal event in the history of Australia – the Federation of the States in 1901. 2. The certificate was an invitation to Mr and Mrs George Rolfe. George Rolfe was a prominent Warrnambool person in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This is a multi-coloured certificate printed on a cream-coloured card. The certificate has an image of the Exhibition Building surrounded by an ornate border of heraldic shields, portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York, views of the six capital cities of Australia, native flora and fauna, the Royal Crest and the Crest of Australia. Jane Shillinglaw was born at Merri Creek, Victoria, June 14, 1846. She had a son, Joseph Shillinglaw (1863-1865) with an unknown partner. Joseph died as a toddler. She subsequently had a second child, a duaghter, Jane Davidson born 1870 She married William James Sommerville, ten years her junior at hawthorn on June 2, 1887. Jane died at Balwyn, Victoria on June 26, 1893. Sarah Shillinglaw was born at River Plenty on November 9, 1854. She married Charles Aldous on June 9, 1880 and died in Prahran, Victoria on August 3, 1925. Six year old Judith Furphy was the first person known to have been buried at Kangaroo Ground Cemetery in May 1851. The cemetery is situated on an ancient river bed with exposed Nillumbik sands. The rest of the district is formed from black volcanic soil which was hard to dig. According to local historian Mick Woiwod (deceased) the site may have been a burial ground for the local Wurundjeri people as the exposed softer sands were always their prefered camping sites. The Hon. Ewen Hugh Cameron who lived at Pigeon Bank and was the Member for Evelyn for 40 years (1874-1914) was buried here in 1915. Kangaroo Ground was a premier hunting ground, but camping on the black volcanic soil would have been uncomfortable. Unlike most of Kangaroo Ground, its cemetery, on an ancient river bed, comprises a rare exposure of Nillumbik sands – always the preferred campsite for Aboriginal people. The cemetery area is the only place where the soil was soft enough to dig a grave easily.1 Six-year-old Judith Furphy was the first person known to have been laid to rest at the Kangaroo Ground Cemetery. She died on May 17, 1851, from a chill caught by resting on wet grass. Local Andrew Ross wrote ‘..no public burying place existed nearer than Melbourne. The case being considered urgent, a general meeting of the settlers took place on the evening of the 17th……. The result was the selection of unoccupied crown land …….which was subsequently granted by Government for a public cemetery.’2 Judith was buried the next day on May 18. Her grave was marked by the trustees with a plaque, which unfortunately states nine years old, when she was probably only six. Judith came from an illustrious family. Her brother, Joseph, was the author of Such is Life and other works. Another brother, John, developed and manufactured the famous Furphy water cart, which distributed water to World War One soldiers along with the latest rumours. Hence the name Furphy entered the Australian idiom, as synonymous with ‘rumour’. Judith’s father Samuel helped build the first Kangaroo Ground church school. Inside, near the entrance of the cemetery, on Yarra Glen Road, stand a rotunda and a water tank. Occasional benches invite mourners to pause and remember. The gate with wrought iron and brick supports, bears the inscription ‘Erected by Sir Ewen and Lady Cameron in memory of their daughter, Flora Margaret’. These are only two of the famous people connected with this cemetery. The Hon. Ewen Hugh Cameron JP and MLA from 1874 to1914, who lived at Pigeon Bank, Warrandyte Road, was buried here in 1915. Unrelated, but with the same name, was Sir Ewen Cameron who had been Minister for Health and was laid to rest there in 1964. Sir Herbert Gepp, a leading industrialist and the former owner of Garden Hill, at Yarra Glen Road, was buried there in 1954.3 Many of the more imposing tombstones belong to the earlier graves. Unfortunately bushfires have cracked several. But this adds to the melancholy attractiveness of the cemetery, graced by some beautiful eucalypts, cypress and pines. Early pioneering families represented at the cemetery include Armstrong, Barr, Bell, Harkness, Jardine, Johnston, Rogerson, Stevenson, Thomson and Walters. Armstrong and Bell were among the first families to come to the district and Stevenson owned the district’s first sheep station. It took in much of present day Christmas Hills, which was the name he gave his sheep station. Harkness was the first to suggest a Kangaroo Ground school be built, and one of the first to suggest establishing the Eltham District Road Board. Many of these families leased pastoral land before the mid-century and bought land when it came on sale in 1849. In the cemetery’s early days sections were devoted to the major Christian denominations (mainly the Protestant) and one section was set aside for ‘other’ or ‘non-believers’. However in modern times burial plots have not been placed in areas according to religious beliefs.This collection of almost 130 photos about places and people within the Shire of Nillumbik, an urban and rural municipality in Melbourne's north, contributes to an understanding of the history of the Shire. Published in 2008 immediately prior to the Black Saturday bushfires of February 7, 2009, it documents sites that were impacted, and in some cases destroyed by the fires. It includes photographs taken especially for the publication, creating a unique time capsule representing the Shire in the early 21st century. Two sections, stapled and bound within heavy card covers, 80 pages with a typed index pasted inside rear covers, printed by Sands & McDougall, Melbourne. Authorised by W. O. Strangward Secretary 1923 and printed 1924. On first page, has number "6246" stamped onto the page. Provides the Rules and Regulations of the Board concerning Accidents, fire, general instructions, signals, uniforms, staff working, special instructions to Motormen and Conductors, tickets, safety for both Cable and Electric tramways. By-Law No. 5 provided on pages 76 to 80. On page 80 has the Seal of the Board and those who signed the document - Alex Cameron Chairman, Thos. O'L Reynolds Member and W. O. Strangward Secretary. William Bear, Photographer operated from 145 Smith Street, Fitzroy from 1877 to 1882. Prior to that the address was occupied by F.C. Burman to 1876 and followed by W. Latimer in 1883 (Sands Melbourne Directory) Marg Ball suggested the fellow may possibly be a Kidd. Put side by side with Sarah Ann Shillinglaw (nee Kidd) and he certainly could be a brother. Looking at Sarah and her siblings, 2nd eldest William seems the most/only candidate given the date of the photo. William Bear only operated from 145 Smith St., Fitzroy from 1877 through 1882. The fashion/hair/whiskers suggest it is moving out of the 1870s and into the 1880s so it is fairly reasonable to suggest circa 1880 for the photo. At that time, William would be 27 – looks right. The only other two brothers, Samuel and Matthew had both died as youngsters years earlier. Further, the placement of the photo in the album on the opposite page to the only photo of Sarah suggests there is a close relationship. The Underwood Motor Manufacturing Co started making 3hp 2-stroke engines, in either marine or stationary styles from about 1946 at 135 Queensberry St, North Melbourne. By about 1949 the 3.5hp 4-stroke engine was introduced. this engine was sold by Baltic Simplex as the Simplex Challenger, replacing the RB&T built S type. By the mid 1950's the firm had shut up shop. In the Sands & McDougall directories of 1948 & 1949 they were listed as Underwood Petrol Engine Co. The following years they were back to Underwood Manufacturing Co. The two-stroke version came in such variations as marine, stationary, tank, hopper cooled and air cooled, each believed to have run on a mixture of 30 parts Standard grade petrol to one part oil. Most but not all water cooled two stroke engines feature a water circulating pump. The 3-4hp four stroke engine used petrol for starting then switched to kerosene when warmed up. Most were 3hp. From a 1947 advertisement the machine was noted with rope start, quickly detachable magneto and the angled spark plug which would have been a marine version with a clutch and hand throttle. The stationary engine had the clutch replaced by a governor. The magneto on these engines did not rotate. it was oscillated by an eccentric on the crank and a link to an arm on the magneto drive shaft. There were other variations including a hopper cooled one with a normal marine base and a chain driven magnet. Research Report or Overseas Tour report, Half bound in green and black Rexene with mottled end papers, 222 pages (Gestetner printed single sided), typed report - titled "Report of H.H. Bell Chairman of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board on his overseas trip March - October 1938". Dated 31/1/1939. He was accompanied by Mr. R. A. Spencer the Board Secretary. Reg Item 3875 indicates that their wives travelled as well with them. Has an index, notes on his visits to five cities on his voyage to England, visits to 10 UK cities, Berlin, Paris and 12 USA and Canadian cities. Includes notes on buses, gas-producer engines, PCC trams, closure of tramways, technical notes, trolley buses, conversion of Bourke St cable tram routes, overhead, motors, engines and many other topics. Note pages scanned in particular have reference to Bourke St conversion and driving habits in the UK compared to Melbourne (road hogs). Ticket - 2 1/2d, MMTB black printing on light brown paper with the value in green ink. A transfer ticket matched with Reg Item 5522. Has a "Victoria Bitter" print on the rear. Ticket No. R799195 Advice from Dean Filgate 7/1/2020 for this item and 5522: "very interesting tickets (why can't I find gems like these when I haunt old bookshops ?) and even better - a matched transfer pair ! The transfer is (I think) from the original McCaskey Systems printing for the "great fare revision" of March 1921, when most fares rose by ½d (or 1d on Sundays & Public Holidays), and is on the wider paper stock of those issues. The 2½d is from a later printing on narrower (but still "long") paper stock, but retains the black + coloured (value) ink on white paper scheme. The original issues had McCaskey's imprint and the value repeated on the back. They are a very nice pair. At some stage in the early/mid-1920s coloured paper tickets were again produced alongside the white-paper issues, before totally replacing them. Some of the colours were also altered. Sands & McDougall cornered the ticket-printing market about this time, blitzing all opposition with a press that produced 57 tickets at once - compared to everyone else's 2-at-a-time presses (Geoff Dean has more information on this). The "horizontal" format (similar to Sydney) was trialled in the late 1920s, and deemed a failure. The number of sections, their direction, and the use of Up/Down or In/Out varied over the years - I have put together a 'chronology' in order of issue, but unfortunately cannot assign dates of issue (yet ? ). 2nd email of 10/1/2021 Yes - keep those two tickets paired together (most people don't ); the only other matched transfer pair that I have seen was in Travis Jeffrey's collection. The 2½d ticket is a mid-1920s printing (from Sands & McDougall, so I am led to believe), the design being re-worked from their previous batch that had this value in red. There may have been another slight revision before the next design - of horizontal (Sydney-type) tickets - were issued. It would appear that horizontal format had already been used by the cable trams well before the electric trams, and that this "next horizontal issue" was used for both cable and electric trams. What I neglected to say before, was that this is an Electric System issue - as denoted by the "E.S." at the top: the alternate heading was "CABLE TRAMWAYS". Most enthusiasts mistake those initials to mean "Eastern System": demonstrably it is not, because there were "E.S." tickets issued specifically for use at Coburg and Essendon depots only (mostly return fares, with the destinations marked on the ticket).trams, tramways, tickets, mmtb, transfer tickets

Jessie McCleverty had a private ladies school in 2 locations in Surrey Hills in the early 1900s. She is not registered in teacher records at PROV. According to Jocelyn Hall's notes her school was located at 12 Durham Road from 1903-1905/6 and from then until 1933 at 44 Windsor Crescent.The earliest date in Sands & MacDougall is c1902 and according to the Victorian Government Gazette 1924, the school closed in 1923. [1933 may be a typo.] She was born in Melbourne in 1862 daughter of George McCleverty and Mary Gill. She had a brother William Edward, b1858, Ballarat East. Her parents may have migrated independently from Ireland. They married in 1856. By 1931 she was retired but still living in Surrey Hills. It is unclear exactly when she moved to Queensland, but she is listed on the electoral roll there for 1943 living with her niece Frances Victoria Shepperd and she died on 26 Jul 1943. She is buried in Toowoomba Cemetery. Fanny Wridgway (1890-1956) was born in Box Hill, the daughter of Frederick Wridgway and his wife Mary Ann (nee Young). She had an older brother Alfred and a younger sister Mary Ann. Box Hill Reporter entry gives her attending Banff Ladies' College in Box Hill in 1904 and she was dux of the school in 1905. Although the original donor indicated that Fanny was a teacher, she is not registered on the PROV Victorian Teachers' Roll. Electoral roll entries consistently indicate that her occupation was 'clerk'. She is buried in Box Hill Cemetery, along with her sister Mary Ann. No information found regarding W M Nance.This a fine example of the standard of work required of a senior student for examination purposes in 1907/1908.An exercise book with alternating lined and plain paper. The cover is beige in colour with a stamped illustration in the top LH corner. The binding is navy coloured cloth tape. it has rounded corners. The pages are numbered in neat black pen in the upper outside corner. An index on the front page indicates the scope of entries and the page number. The book is almost full. Each completed page has been signed by W M Nance. Harriet Cecilia Hordern Williams (1889 - 1968) was the grand-daughter of William Hordern (1830 - 1881) and Cecelia Monger (1830 - 1914). William Hordern was the sixth of seven children of Anthony Hordern Snr. who established the Anthony Hordern & Sons department store in Sydney which operated from 1923 to 1970. Harriet's mother Cecilia (1854 - 1934) was married to Christopher Williams. Harriet's uncle William was appointed commissioner of the Supreme Court of South Australia in 1903. Her cousin Doris Amelia Hordern (1889 - 1970), as Doris Blackburn won the Federal seat of Bourke in 1946 following the death of her husband who had previously held the seat. This branch of the Hordern family has a strong connection to Hawthorn through their home "Stramshall" in Auburn Road Hawthorn and also with the Auburn Baptist Church. Harriet Williams enlisted in the Australian Army Nurse in December 1916 and served as a Staff Nurse until her marriage in London in 1919. This certificate is significant to the history of Hawthorn and Australia through its connection with the Hordern family, the home Stramshall in Hawthorn and with the Auburn Baptist Church. It is significant to the history of the Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne as an example of early 20th century training protocol, in the persons who signed the certificate and the photographs of the hospital buildings of that time. Mrs Florence Margaret Tacey (nee Edwards) was the mother of Albert Arthur Tacey. She was born in 1863; died in 1943 in Camberwell. Her husband was William Tacey born in the Buckland Valley near Bright in 1857. There were many members of the Tacey family who were butchers. Various members of the family were associated with Tacey's Butchers at 629 Canterbury Road, Surrey Hills. According to a Context P/L heritage assessment of the property the land on which the business was built "was purchased by Edward Tacey on 16 September 1889. Edward Tacey was a butcher and the Sands & MacDougall street directory indicates that a butcher’s shop had been constructed on the site and was operating by 1890. It seems that the family lived for some time at a house located next door to the shop at 627 Canterbury Road (visible on the 1909 MMBW plan, but since demolished). On 15 June 1920 Edward Tacey transferred all three blocks of land to Joseph Tacey, most likely his son * and also a butcher, who carried on business from the same premises. Joseph Tacey died on 20 February 1933, after which administration of his estate (which included the three blocks of land) passed to his widow, Mary Dorothy Tacey." Edward Tacey (1863 - 1952) was the brother of William Tacey (1857 - 1920). The property passed to Joseph Charles Tacey (1887 - 1933), his nephew and son of William, not his son. His wife was Mary Dorothy Coates. Albert Arthur Tacey was a brother of Joseph Charles Tacey. The SHNCHC has a large framed photo collage of the Tacey butcher's shop at 629 Canterbury Road. It hung in various Tacey family-owned butcher's shops around Victoria before coming back to Surrey Hills. The donor was the daughter of Albert Arthur Tacey (1902-1959). KEVIN ‘BOOFA’ INNES By Lucy McCormick Kevin was a member of the celebrated Innes clan from Inglewood, in Central Victoria. “I think the first Innes’ came to Inglewood in 1851. My daughter used to say she can’t marry anyone from Inglewood, because she’s related to them all,” says Kevin. ‘Boofa’ is enjoying some well-earned relaxation on the couch after breaking a kneecap six or seven months ago in a track work incident. Not that it seems to be bothering him too much; he’s got plenty of time to keep up with the trots on television. “I do follow them,” Kevin says. “I don’t miss many, and I do have a bet. I like to sit in the chair and drive a race as much as anyone.” With an illustrious career both as a trainer and in the sulky, it’s a safe bet that Kevin Innes is a more than handy ‘grandstand driver’. His name is associated as a trainer/driver with many handy horses, including Lea Sands, Imatoff and Stormy Morn to name a few. Kevin is typically circumspect about his bigger triumphs, however that doesn’t seem to be what interests him the most. “I’ll tell you something,” he declares, doing just that, “I like winning with the horses that were no good. Some people never get a good horse. Imagine that. Luck is a very, very important thing. You have to have luck to buy a good horse at the sales, to get it going, keep it sound, find a race for it, find and owner and get a draw. And they still make a liar of you.” Funny, interesting or quirky stories seem to be of greater interest to Kevin, such as the time he had a strong chance in a standing start race – the favourite in the race being his only worry. “I told the owner it only had a 20-metre handicap – I couldn’t beat it off that,” he remembers. “So I was leading, waiting for the favourite to run past me. Toward the finish, I heard it coming, and it ran straight past all right – minus the driver. He’d fallen out of the cart and I won the race. Just lucky.” The Innes family have always been heavily involved in one sporting pursuit or another – Kevin himself being a champion bike rider of his time. “My Uncle Roy was a good bike rider, so he dared me to have a go. It turned out I was quite good at it as well.” So good, in fact that for many years Kevin was able to make a living from bike riding, riding the ‘board track’ for many years. “We trained hard. Bike riding was very big back then, we’d train and ride three or four times a week.” Kevin’s riding career spanned four Herald Sun Tours, a Warrnambool to Melbourne and a Sydney to Melbourne race, to name a few. “It definitely gets you in – it was long hours,” he muses. “But like anything, horse racing included, you only get back what you put in. We trained hard. I never drank, and I still don’t. I’ve seen that many athletes, great ones too, brought down by alcohol.” Lucky with injury too, Kevin can only remember a sore ankle – as well as the requisite scrapes and abrasions from tumbles on the wooden boards of the velodromes. He still enjoys watching all the big bike races when he can. “You can watch them race all over the world – France, Sweden, Germany. “To be honest I sit up and watch them with my son and we get just as much of a kick looking at the countryside than anything else. It’s so different to when I was racing.” Betting on the bike racing was big in Kevin’s day as well, and some of the bookies Kevin saw betting on the bike racing, he saw at the Showgrounds betting on the trots on a Friday or Saturday night. “Racing was different back then. There would be twelve thousand people at the showgrounds – they don’t have to come anymore, it’s just as easy to watch it on the TV.” Kevin remembers in those days that drivers had to ‘weigh in’ as well – everyone who drove needed to weigh ten stone (just under 65 kilograms). It’s something he remembers fondly. “I know not everyone will.” Kevin won’t be drawn on the subject of favourite drivers, either. “Look. Driving is different now. No disrespect to current drivers, but you had to think a lot more on a three furlong track than they do now on the bigger tracks. You had to drive with brains. And I really believe that good horses make good drivers. The horses are very good these days. Today’s drivers – your Gavin Langs, Chris Alfords – they’re thinkers, and brains will beat brawn every time. The girls are just as good now too. You only have to look at Kerryn Manning.” A garrulous and popular character, Kevin has trained horses for the likes of legendary Richmond player Jack Dyer, and also spent his fair share of time hosting sportsman’s nights, holding his own with the likes of Ron Barassi. On one such night, they had flown in a light aircraft to their destination. During their show, Kevin noticed their pilot, sitting in the front row, laughing appreciatively. There was one problem. He had a beer in his hand, and was consuming it with some enthusiasm. As the night wore on, the pilot became more and more inebriated, and Kevin became more and more disturbed, knowing that this was the same pilot who was to fly them home when they finished. Unbeknownst to Kevin, however, the flight had been cancelled and the pilot hadn’t told anyone, instead deciding to take full advantage of his client’s hospitality. For now, Kevin is happy living in Inglewood with partner Barbara. Son Grant and daughter Carla aren’t far away (both work at the Bendigo Harness track, and Carla has held both a trainer and driver’s licence). His granddaughter, Barclay Sands, was born on the same day of the demise of their star performer, Lea Sands, and may give the biggest hint yet just how important the world of harness racing is to Kevin ‘Boofa’ Innes. This letter was written by Henry Davis, editor of the Warrnambool Standard, to Joseph Archibald, curator of the Warrnambool Museum. Dated 11 October 1883, it refers to Davis’s recovery of a saturated volume of ‘Longfellow’s Poems’ from the sea at Loch Ard Gorge. The retrieval of this book, and its possible connection with one of the survivors from the LOCH ARD shipwreck in 1878, prompted Archibald’s letter of 1 December 1883 to Eva Carmichael, and Eva’s reply of 21 January 1884 (No, it was not her book). Miss Carmichael’s reply to Archibald’s inquiry (2290.4) and the water-damaged book itself (541) are both in the Flagstaff Hill collection along with this letter from Davis, which connects the two. The Davis letter reads: “Dear Sir, ― This book was found by me in the waves which broke on the sands [….] the Gorge where Tom Pearce rescued Miss Carmichael after the wreck of the ill-fated ‘Loch Ard’. I ran in with the receding waves and picked up the soddened volume, and, coincidentally, the first illustrations that met my gaze, on parting its dripping pages, was that portraying the fair maiden in the ‘Wreck of the [Hersperus’.] On the Bluff, 200 feet above me, were the dead forms of Mrs and one of the Misses Carmichael, whilst [by] them, stiff and [….] were two gentlemen passengers [by] the wreck[ed] [v]essel]. Having just left them before [….] [my] capture in the Gorge, you may imagine [m]y feelings on alighting upon, under such circumstances, Longfellow’s beautiful and sympathetic poem. Yours truly, H.W. Davis.” The book referred to here is The Poetical Works of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 1877, Nimmo, London. It is on display under glass in the Great Circle Gallery at the Maritime Village, alongside a typed transcript of the Davis letter. A 1996 audit of the rare book collection at Flagstaff Hill notes: “Inscribed ‘Loch Ard June 1 1878’ in pencil within ― believed to be a salvage from the shipwreck”. The letter is connected to the salvaged items from the 1878 LOCH ARD shipwreck, which is of State significance ― Victorian Heritage Number S417Letter from H. Davis, editor of the Warrnambool Standard, to J. Archibald, curator of the Warrnambool Museum. It was handwritten in ink on “Standard Office, Warrnambool” letterhead note paper, and dated 11 October 1883. The cursive script appears carelessly written and the original single sheet of paper is in poor condition (torn and creased).
