It shows children and people gathered together, some are holding balloons and some have party hats on. Legacy rented the Market St premises for many years. It was part of the Western Market complex that was demolished and redeveloped in the early 1960s. Legacy held meetings, activities and the girls classes on the second floor of the building, accessed by this staircase, but it was barely fit for purpose. In the 1940s a generous donation by an anonymous donor meant Legacy could purchase a building at 342 Swanston St, but due to several factors were never able to inhabit it. This a cropped reproduction of a photograph taken by Charles Nettleton in c. 1868. Founded in 1856, the Lying-in Hospital was the second hospital to be established in Melbourne, after the Melbourne Hospital. It was, however, the first lying-in hospital in the Australasian colonies. The hospital was founded in a converted private house "Fairmont", which was located at 41 Albert Street, Eastern Hill (now East Melbourne). In 1858, the 'Lying-in Hospital' was relocated and opened in Madeline St, North Melbourne (now known as Swanston St, Carlton)." (The Women's) The building pictured here was eventually demolished in 1938 to make way for further extensions to the building. The original site in Albert Street was demolished in 1960, and the site is now occupied by the Melbourne Fire Brigade. A section of the wrought iron gates from the original site in Albert Street is held in RANZCOG's historical collection.Reproduction photograph of the front of a building. Photos of abseiling down the Gas and Fuel building that were on the corner of Flinders St and Swanston St. It was an event for Legacy Week 1989. A copy of the Act of the Victorian Parliament relating to the property held in trust for Junior Legacy, Melbourne. It mentions that Richard Goldsmith of the United States wanted to mark his appreciation of services rendered in Australia to the armed forces of USA during World War 2 and in memory of the late David H Dureau. The company BG Corporation (of the USA), of which he was president, gave a gift of £27,059 to Junior Legacy Club of Melbourne for the purchase and fitting out of premises for the use of the club in its principal object of the care and welfare of children of deceased servicemen. Also that the building be perpetually known as the "D H Dureau Memorial Building". The first building that was purchased with the donation was 342 Swanston St, however it was found unsuitable and this Act allowed it be sold and a new building be found (293 Swanston St). The Act was cited as "Junior Legacy Melbourne (Dureau Memorial) Act 1953". The hand written note says that the Act "tells a story", is possibly part of the notes made when compiling the history of Legacy. They were in a folder of documents about the history of Legacy. Appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). The notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. The call for public donations was partially due to the purchase of the Dureau building and the need to modify the building for Legacy's needs. The documents from this folder have been added in separate records (see 01262 to 01281). The folder was part of an attempt to capture history of Legacy, generally from the 1950s. Newspaper clipping from The Age, (2/6/2000?), about an accident in St Kilda Road when a W class tram collided with a Z class tram. Article reports on the withdrawal of W class trams by Swanston St tram immediately. Titled "Brakes could spell the end of line for classic trams" Hugh Waldron's Transit Australia notes (Reg Item 5359 for June 2000) reports "After an accident between “SW6” 869 and “Z1” 75 at about 4pm on Thursday 1st June 2000 all Swanston “W” class trams were instructed to shunt at the closest crossover and return special to the Depot. A photo of Legatee Doc Sargeant with a stethoscope looking at a junior legatee in 1954. The girl's badge says her name is Robyn Leggo. Melbourne Legacy began proving medical and dental care for junior legatees in the 1930s. At first Legatees who were professional doctors and dentists provided care free of charge. When size of the demand was realised Melbourne Legacy opened a dental clinic. For many years the dental clinic was run out of Legacy House in Swanston St. The photo appeared in the July 1954 edition of the Legacy Newsletter with the caption "Legatee Doc Sargeant examines a Junior." The accompanying article say that girls joining Legacy are given a medical examination free of charge. A doctor is in attendance on Friday nights when the girls have classes and he may be consulted whenever necessary. Legacy has as it's disposal a large number of specialists . This document discusses the many options available to Melbourne Legacy in matters such as:- A) Disposal of Legacy House (293 Swanston St, Melbourne), redeveloping the existing site, selling the building and remain as a tenant or moving to another location. Many variations of these options are discussed. B) Whether Legacy luncheons would or should continue, would any of the above options reduce widow visits to Legacy House. C) Matters that would influence the sale price and/or costs of alterations. D) Reasons for/against various options E) Recommendations. There are 5 recommendations in total. The above items are followed up by some observations during the discussions but not central to the brief.
