Common School Pleasant Creek 502. Part of a collection of Photographs by Mr. O.G. Armstrong as commissioned by the Shire of Stawell for the Inter-colonial and Paris Exhibition in Melbourne in 1866. The site for the school pictured was reserved in October 1864 and the building was opened in 1865. The brick building is still in use and is at the rear of the current 502 Primary School buildings, Barnes Street. Tarilta is a rural locality and former gold-mining town 12 km south of Castlemaine, 4 km north-west of Guildford and 3 km north-east of Vaughan. The last gold mining activity took place around the 1880s. It was originally Kangaroo Flat, being located where the Kangaroo Creek enters the Loddon River. It was surveyed and named in 1864. Gold was discovered at Tarilta in 1853. The Tarilta School was opened in 1860 in a Wesleyan chapel, and closed i n1925. In 1864 a township was surveyed and named Tarilta, the word being derived from an Aboriginal expression thought to mean kangaroo. In 1865 Bailliere’s Victorian gazetteer described Tarilta as being an alluvial and quartz gold-mining town with three quartz-crushing mills, three horse-puddling machines and two hotels. St Peter's Church was established in 1861 in the school house. In 1864 the question of building a church was seriously discussed. A foundation stone for the church was laid on 16 November 1864 by Bendan S. Hassell. The architect was Charles Davenport Cuthbert; the trustees were Somerville Learmonth, W.P. Whitcombe, Robert Wynne and J.B. McQuie. The church building committee consisted of Horace walker, J.S. Carver, John M. Fisher, Robert Williams, Thomas Gibson, John E. Hodgson and W. Lindisay Richardson. The foundation stone of the Soldier's Chapel was laid on 06 April 1917. The beautiful stained glass in the chapel was donated by Mrs W. Tunbridge and H.C. Curwen-Walker, in memory of their sons who were killed during World War One. In 1929 a new three manual organ by London's Hill, Norman and Beard was installed. Elizabeth Jane Edwards was born in Geelong in 1851 to Eliza, nee Murphy and Frederick Edwards. It is said that she was one of the first children registered in Melbourne. She married George Gray in 1864. They lived at Cleir Hills, Queenstown where George was a pioneer fruitgrower in the area. They had six daughters and two sons. She died in 1901 aged 58. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' Anglican services were first held in Carisbrook in 1851. In 1854 church services and a school were conducted in the Parish Hall. In 1864 - 1866 the blue stone church was erected. The interior was renovated in 1966 and the vestry was added in 1972. These medals have been issued to members of the Warrnambool and District Caledonian Society (one to a committee member). This group is dedicated to preserving and promoting Scottish heritage in the local area and sponsors Scottish country dancing and Highland dancing. The group has its origins in the establishment in Warrnambool of the Western Caledonian Society in 1864 and annual Highland Gatherings were held in the district for many decades after this. Lismore Post Office was opened in the year 1864. In the year 1883 a telegraph system was introduced to Lismore, this service carried on until 1888. In 1914 the Lismore Post Office was opened as an Official Post Office and the Morse system was reintroduced. This service functioned until the closure of the system in Victoria on Saturday June 30 1962. The Marong PO opened 1/1/1860 and the area was declared the Marong Road District 19/8/1860. On 12/12/1864 it was redesignated as the Marong Shire and then in 1990 it was proclaimed a rural city. The Sutton Grange PO opened 1/8/1865 and closed in 1970. Mary Ann Poultney, née Hisshion was born at Linton in 1864. She married John Poultney at Ballarat on December 31, 1888. It is understood that they lived in Sydney until John Poultney died in 1902, after which Mary Ann returned to Linton with her three daughters, Annie, Nell, and Lillian. Accurate charts were imperative for sea farers to sail their vessels safely from one side of the world to another. The British Admiralty published many charts and updated them frequently. Specialists were employed to gather information such as depth soundings to give the navigator as many helps as possible.
